3 One person can make a difference The Volunteer program at Nashville CARES plays an important part in serving our clients. Every day volunteers help clients directly by delivering monthly foods bags or cleaning clients' homes and yards. They may drive them to the doctor, go to the grocery store, or simply provide friendship and support. As many of you know these programs are important to the well-being of our clients, but sometimes we don t have enough volunteers to go around. If you are interested in helping please contact Barbara Bequette x252 or bbequette@nashvillecares.org. Department of Human Services Food Stamps TennCare Families First WIC A DHS representative will be at CARES every other 1PM to speak with clients about eligibility and to assist with a new application or recertification. **Please note that recertification appointments will only be held after the 15th of the month** 1st Quarter DHS Dates February 12th February 26th March 5th March 19th Call the HEARTLine ( ) Welcome to the 21st Century! Beginning April 1, 2009, Client Services will use a new computer system to help make service delivery faster and easier for our clients. Please be patient with us as we make this change. More information will be published in the next HEARTbeat. Let CARE Teams be there for YOU!!! Do you need regular help around your house, grocery shopping, yard maintenance, walking the dog or just someone to visit and keep you company? CARE Teams can assist you with one-time projects as many times as you may need. Remember services are provided as long as there are available volunteers. Bigger projects require as much notice as possible. For more information, please contact Barbara Bequette x252 bbequette@nashvillecares.org WHAT YOU EAT DOES MATTER It s critical that you pay attention to what you re eating. Having a healthy, balanced diet can help you maintain proper weight, build and preserve muscle mass, and feel more energetic. A healthy diet can also help support your immune system, which may help you better cope with your disease. It s also important to be mindful of any changes in your appetite. A loss of appetite sometimes can occur during illness and can lead to a poor diet and weight loss. Weight loss and muscle loss in people with HIV/AIDS can be dangerous because the body may not have the energy or strength to fight infection. TIPS TO HELP YOU EAT HEALTHIER 1. Talk to your doctor or dietician to develop a plan that will meet your individual needs. 2. Follow a healthy and balanced diet to reach a reasonable weight (as determined by your doctor). 3. Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day to boost your energy. 4. Try to avoid sweets, such as: candy, soda, cookies, and cakes as they contain large amounts of sugar and saturated fat. 5. Choose foods rich in fiber and nutrients, such as: vegetables, fruits, and grains. 6. Choose foods that are high in protein and low in saturated fat, like: chicken, fish, beef, pork, and dairy products. Appetite for Life
