1 Kevin s Korner I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Now that it is December, we have Christmas coming up and look forward to getting together with family again. Christmas is the season of giving, so why not give the gift of optimism to your friends, family and your community this year. Many of our Optimists are helping our communities this holiday season by collecting toys, clothing or food to distribute to those in need in our communities. However, we have a lot of communities that do not have Optimists to improve the life in their communities, so if you have friends or family living somewhere that needs an organization like ours, please send a message to me, your Lt. Governor or to Jim Meyers, the New Club Building Chair, and we will take it from there! We are at a historic time in Optimist history right now! We are on track to having at least 18 new clubs in Optimist International in the first quarter this year. That hasn t happened since the turn of the century! So, let s start brainstorming out there about great spots for new clubs. And just remember, this is not about the number of clubs we have or the number of members we have, its about having the ability to serve the kids in our community. If we are not growing, we are not serving our communities to our fullest potential. The momentum is going, so let s keep it going 1 member or 1 club at a time! 2 The Optimist Creed Promise Yourself To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. Kevin s Korner (Continued from page 1) In addition to helping kids and our communities, we also help each one of our members. We offer friendship, social and volunteer events in addition to leadership growth and experience. We need to make each one of our gatherings fun, educational and above all, optimistic! We need to find ways to keep our members involved and interested! More information on these topics are coming to the district website in the following months. Furthermore, make sure you are keeping your own club healthy by taking care of current members and asking others to join. The phrase Just Ask has been around for many years in the optimist organization. But there is more to it than just asking people to join. Just Ask your current members why they joined and let them tell their story. Just Ask those members that you haven t seen for awhile to help with an event or find out if there is any way you might help them. Just Ask leaders in your community if there is any program they see that may be needed. Just Ask yourself if there is anything you can do differently to improve the life of a child, your community or yourself. Be Optimist Strong, Be the Difference, Be a Leader! Kevin Hammell kahammell@charter.net DMM Governor True or False? Kangaroos outnumber humans in Australia. People in Duluth, MN live farther north than half of Canada s population. Killer whales are dolphins, not whales. More people live in Bangladesh than in Russia. Ireland is further north than all than all the U.S. states except Alaska. 5 Growth / Membership GIVING As I start my contribution to the monthly newsletter I m reminded that today is GIVING TUESDAY, known globally for charitable giving. And, it reminds me it is what we are all about. Giving to help our youth, our communities and ourselves be the best that we can be. 6 Youth Appreciation Optimist Club scholarship winners overcome and inspire on a daily basis Rubén Rosario Pioneer Press One was left without a father or a mother by the age of 9. Another managed to juggle college-prep courses while suffering from a serious affliction. A third escaped civil war and smuggled medicine for sick refugees. A fourth scrappy overachiever understands his self-worth and goals easily trump the negative impact of the stares, finger-pointing and taunts that he knows may follow him throughout his life. I m talking here about four of this year s 17 St. Paul public high school students awarded college scholarships from the Optimist Club of St. Paul. The club upped the award from $1,500 to $2,000 this year and has given out nearly $400,000 to eligible public high school students since I made it a point 12 years ago to profile some of these unsung youths, most of whom are excelling in spite of tough odds and hardships, and have done so every year since. Their resiliency and moxie are inspirational. Their stories give me a boost. We need to single out and embrace and nurture these homegrown young men and women. They are among our present and future best. These kids are just a force of nature, and they seem to use the adversity they have faced to gather strength and move forward, said John Tillotson, senior vice president for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management LLC and a longtime Optimist Club member. Within our current state of affairs, many people feel like we have lost track as to what is possible, but not these kids. *************************** To read the entire article, including pictures, please see the article by Ruben Rosario in the Nov 5, 2017 St Paul Pioneer Press in the Local B1 section of the paper. Again this year we have students who have overcome obstacles and continue to be Optimistic about the present, their futures and how they will work to make their dreams come true. 7 New Club Building! IT JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU WHAT THREE NEW CLUBS CAN MEAN TO THE DMM Once again the DMM has become distinguished. All the requirements met for the honor, membership, new club requirement, bills paid, etc. We did it again! What really stands out is the efforts put forth by those individuals who stepped up, took a challenge and built the new clubs that took the DMM over the top. The folks in Lakeville, Roseville and Harrisburg deserve a real pat on the back. Let me explain. We ended the year +56. The new club builders added 109 new members with the three new clubs. Without those new 109 members we would have been in the hole and not a Distinguished district in spite of all other efforts by others. A simple fact, YOU GROW WHEN YOU BUILD NEW CLUBS! I guess we proved that during Now we enter a new year. We still need to grow and add new members and clubs. So far it's been slow but several opportunities are in front of us. Who wants to be a Distinguished Club President or a Distinguished Lt Governor? A Builder of Excellence? Who will step forward and take the challenge? Over 100 communities in the DMM no longer have an Optimist Club. A great place to start and bring our programs back to the kids in those areas. If you are willing to give it a shot.. call me and I'll help you get on the right track and get started. It's a challenge but a lot of fun. Jim Meyers dmmpstgov@aol.com NCB Chair Past OI Vice President Club News (Continued from page 4) proceeds to the Youth Swim team. The club gave away 500 TLC toys during the Annual Stand Still parade o Lights. Information was given out to the Middle School for the "Kids Speak Out" program. RUSHMORE NOON had 9 schools participate in Red Ribbon Week this year. They helped sponsor a Westlake concert, the Johnny and June Tribute, and sold hot chocolate and popcorn during the Festival of Lights Parade. They continue their involvement with the Children s Home birthday celebrations as well as Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs. SOUTH WINNIPEG learned about the Canadian Children s Optimist Foundation s Spread Relief Program that encourages support for children being treated for medical issues other than cancer from Lt Gov Barb Sul. She also reported that the Optimist Clubs of Winnipeg Foundation served 3,000 brats during four BBQ s and raised $4, pairs of mittens were given to Frontenac School and they continue their support of immigrant families learning English as well as providing a hamper of items for a needy family. GRAND FORKS found sponsors for all 24 lanes as a fundraiser for Safe Kids Get The Ball Rolling event set for December 7. They ll use Bismarck s Pay it Forward idea to garner sponsors for the annual gift wrapping, too. BISMARCK filled back packs for United Way, posted flags on Veteran s Day, began gift wrapping, AND welcomed TEN new members! WEST ST PAUL enjoyed guest speaker, Immediate Past Governor of the DMM, Terry Gorman, during their November meeting. 9 Club Fitness Tips Suggested December Check-list By the end of this month we will have already completed a quarter of our year scary isn't it? So before that happens here are a few key to do items that you can complete and check off that list: Hopefully your club has reviewed and made judgements on activities and projects from last year whether to eliminate, refine or expand them, and whether to add new ones to meet new needs of your youth. With the review completed, your plans for the rest of this year should be on the calendar, with committees appointed and ready to start the ball rolling. This is also the month to make sure your members have paid their dues, and if they haven't, please contact them personally and ask them to again help you bring out the best in kids and if you don't get a positive response, ask them to continue to support the club by becoming a Friend of Youth. And please, adopt the philosophy of adding a member when you drop one. So that's it not too much to handle for the final month of the calendar year, right? If you do those things, you'll be on your way to a successful Optimist year. Mentoring a Rookie Rock Star The newly revised PGI (Personal Growth & Involvement) Level 10 includes a requirement to mentor a Rookie Rock Star. A Rookie Rock Star Award can be earned ONLY in the first twelve months of membership as recorded in the records of Optimist International. The new member must do all of the following during the first 12 months. Serve on a Club Committee Work on a Service Project Sponsor a New Member Attend one of the following: District meeting, Regional Summit, OI Convention The Rookie Rock Star will receive an Optimist pin upon accomplishing those activities during the first 12 months of membership. If you complete PGI Level 10 and have the PGI Recognition Form completed by Governor Kevin before February 1, 2018, you will not need to mentor a Rookie Rock Star. If you have any questions, please contact me. Cheryl Bergstrom ckbergstrom@hotmail.com DMM Personal Development Chair Oh, and one other thing. 10 Joint Zone 6 & 7 Meeting It all happened Sunday Nov. 5th at the Pizza Ranch in Madison, SD. Attendees were from Zone 6, Brookings (5), Zone 7 Sioux Falls Morning (3), Sioux Valley (3), Harrisburg (1), Vermillion (3), Yankton (1), and Brandon (1). The Agenda included the Mission, Vision, Purpose as each introduced themselves by selecting a line from the Creed and told what that means to them as an Optimist. Power Point programs covered NOW, Coffee Recruitment, Zone Contest for Oratorical & Essay, Club Officer Elect Forms, CRA, CPR to name a few. Dennis explained why You should be active in the District, recapped Jamestown 1st Quarter Meeting, and Future Meetings. Dave Martin, Incoming Governor and Strategic Planning Chair, spoke about what was presented at 1st quarter and opened the floor up for discussion. It was very actively talked about getting attendance at future meetings to increase. Dave and will bring recommendations forward to his Committee. District Sub Committees want to become more involved by having input. Technology is the future of how the District must communicate and keep clubs and Optimists informed. District 35 covers a lot of miles; maybe there will need to be realignment of Lt. Governors to help the District personnel convey the message. Sally discussed Scholarships, grant opportunities and Promotional Resources for Clubs to explore. Clubs talked about what they do for fundraisers and projects. There were 23 door prizes. Dennis used the Dirty Santa concept by drawing a number for a door prize, then the next person drew a number and was able to "steal" the previous one if they wished or keep what they drew in hopes of getting to keep the one they drew. This created lots of laughs and excitement through out the meeting. This was a very successful meeting and Sally and I want to thank all those that participated and enjoyed the afternoon together. Text submitted by Lt. Governor Dennis V. Steffen / Photo by Lt. Governor Sally Damm The following unsolicited comment was provided by an attendee: Sally & Dennis - Thanks very much for a great Zone meeting! Learned new stuff & refreshed old - way to go! Lots of time & planning on your part - loved the time to laugh & share - the gifts were awesome & fun way to receive! Looking forward to an exciting year of change, etc.!! Recruit a Teacher - RENEWED! The "Recruit a Teacher for $30" incentive has been renewed for the entire year! Optimist International is waiving the $15.00 membership fee and offering a year's dues for only $30 for teachers. Contact membership@optimist.org for more information. IMPORTANT CORRECTION! A call to OI has revealed that Friend of Optimist memberships paid for via plastic, i.e. credit or debit cards, can NOT opt for automatic renewal! If that appears on Friend of Optimist applications you have in your possession, please cross off that option at the bottom of the form. 10
