1 The Optimistic Sept The Official Publication of the Optimist Club of Las Cruces The Club meets at 6:30am for breakfast every Thursday at IHOP on Telshor Blvd. Sept. 7 Business Meeting We are so honored to have as our guests Ceci Medina, current District Governor and Ivory Matthews, District Governor-Elect, as well as Mary Garcia, who filled out her application this morning! NMSU has invited us to a scholarship donors luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 6 in Corbett. Let Tommy know if you d like to attend. 5th annual Girl Scouts Women of Distinction luncheon is coming up on Thursday, Sept. 21. Aimee is taking orders for candy and nuts for our Girl Scout Troop. Charley received a few checks back from baseball. One is from Mas Distribution and Charley doesn t know who sold that ad. Let him know if it s your sale. There will be a concert tomorrow evening at the Las Cruces Plaza in honor of Sept. 11. Also, there will be a stair walk on Sunday at 8am at the Wells Fargo building downtown with proceeds to Jardin de los Ninos, also in honor of Sept. 11. District Governor Ceci talked to us the donation of her hair to help support childhood cancer research. She auctioned off the opportunity to cut her hair, and Jack Barclay won that opportunity. She told us a lot about her work to support childhood cancer efforts and her personal journey in Optimist Club and with cancer. Then, Ivory got up to tell us some about what s going on in our District, including realigning district zones 6 & 7 and improving club officer training. UPCOMING EVENTS: 9/14 Bill Matisse 9/21 9/28 Installation Banquet 10/3 Board Meeting 10/5 Business Meeting 10/14Aggie Safety Fair (tent.) 2 On October 27th, 2017, the American Legion Post 10, The Community of Hope, The El Paso Veterans Affairs (VA) and the VetCenter of Las Cruces will be hosting Stand Down Stand Down is a nationwide event held in local communities with the purpose of aiding the homeless veteran population in getting back on their feet. The Las Cruces Stand Down will provide veterans access to VA services and healthcare, contact with the local community outreach services, find opportunities for gainful employment, receive new or used clothing for the winter months and hygiene items. Many of these basics things can make a difference in the life of a homeless person and sometimes taken for granted by many that are not homeless. This year we are in need of undergarment for both women and men, back packs, hygiene items for women and men and clothing that will allow them to use for interviews and warmth through the winter. We are asking you for cash or in-kind donations to make this event a success. All donations are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated. On a single night in the United States of America, there were 549,928 homeless people in Of those homeless, 39,471 were veterans. Through programs like The Community of Hope and events like these, the homeless veteran population has decreased by 8,000 people or 17% between 2010 through The Stand Down 2017 is on October 27th from 8 am to 2 pm at the American Legion Post 10 in Las Cruces, NM. Thank you for your time and consideration in support of the stand down event. If you have questions regarding this event, please contact Andrea Sandoval, Chair Committee, Combat Veterans on Point. She can be ed at andrea@combatveteransonpoint.com.
