1 New Mexico/West Texas District New Mexico/West Texas District Sun, Sand and Sage Volume 72, Number 3 Second Quarter Alamogordo One of our recent projects was the distribution of stuffed toys to Kids Inc. Club members gathered over two dozen toys at our meeting on December 13. Later Anita Cowart presented the toys to Melanie Gilmore, the Director of Kids Inc, a child advocacy center that serves Otero and Lincoln Counties, whose primary purpose is to minimize trauma to abused children and their families, and to improve the collaboration of community agencies. Kids Inc. provides stuffed toys to each child that they can keep to ease the trauma they have endured. Pictured is Jim Scott and Anita with just a few of the toys. Also pictured is Anita with Melanie Gilmore. Our JOI Club at Academy del Sol has also been active over the Around the District holidays. Pictured is JOI Club Vice President Nevaeh Baker with canned goods the JOI Club gathered for needy students at Academy del Sol and their families. Las Cruces While Club Secretary Rachel Gioannini was out of the room, the Las Cruces OC board voted to make her a Life Member. She was given her certificate at the Club Business Meeting on November 9. 3 Our hearts go out to our Past-Governor Ceci Medina. She has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer which is inoperable. She is waiting to see what alternatives her oncologist suggests. As all of you know, Ceci is a fighter and we will stand with her in this battle. Send me your photos and copy, and I ll publish them here. John Cowart, bent.tree@yahoo.com Text in Word and photos as jpg. Optimist Creed Promise Yourself: To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To take health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the fest, to work only for the best and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. Purposes of an Optimist Club To develop Optimism as a philosophy of life utilizing the tenets of the Optimist Creed; To promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs; To inspire respect for law; To promote patriotism and work for international accord and friendship among all people; To aid and encourage the development of youth in the belief that the giving of one's self in service to others will advance the well-being of humankind, community life and the world. Dime-a-Day A new year, a new effort. The Optimist International Foundation supports our Oratorical and Essay Scholarships and helps to fund club projects. It needs our support. Every member should try to contribute $36.50 to the Optimist Foundation. This is just $0.10 a day. Most of us spend $36.50 on a night out. So, look deep into your heart and find a way to bring a check for the OI Foundation for $36.50 to your next meeting.
