3 Cover letter STANDING TOGETHER AND THE BLOOMING STRONG CAMPAIGN November 25th every year marks the United Nations day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. At Standing Together Against Domestic Violence, we use this time of year to celebrate the strength of women who have survived gender based violence, or supported someone who has. We have run this campaign since 2014, and it grows every year. The idea is to encourage women that they to have the strength to survive, leave, move forward and recover from gender-based violence. We have found this positive campaign very successful. Very often at this time of year women are portrayed as victims of crime. We want to turn that around to promote the strength that women show either by surviving in an abusive relationship, continuing to get through each day despite the abuse, or leaving a relationship and starting out again, often with no more than they can carry. Flowers - We celebrate the emotional strength & resilience of women by presenting a variety of women with a single flower - to those who are accessing services and working within services, to local women in leadership roles and to local women in the community. We believe this positive approach celebrates and recognises the strength of local women and will also demonstrate to women who are experiencing violence, how Blooming Strong they are! Awards - Local services can nominate women for a Blooming Strong award (a flower) in recognition for overcoming the odds, or going the extra mile. You can also develop your own local campaign and sell Blooming Strong merchandise to raise funds for violence against women services. Coffee Mornings This year we have introduced the Blooming Strong Coffee morning (or Afternoon Tea!), where strong women get together to celebrate and raise funds for their chosen local VAWG services. Information about this is included in this pack. This national campaign enables people to celebrate the best of their locality and raise funds for their own services whilst spreading a message that honours how Blooming Strong women are! Of course, Blooming Strong activity can be carried out on other dates throughout the year, such as International Women s Day, feel free to do so. Why not mix and match elements of this campaign to create your own Blooming Strong activity? 4 Running a local campaign A little bit about the campaign When running a campaign, we ask that you keep to the Blooming Strong logo/brand and credit Standing Together as the owner of the campaign. Blooming Strong is a positive campaign that celebrates the strength of women. Flowers are for women only, it s not that we don t celebrate male allies/survivors but on this day (the UN day for the elimination of violence against women) we celebrate women. We would recommend White Ribbon as a campaign to use at other times which is inclusive of all genders. The elements of this campaign are made up of Blooming Strong awards and the distribution of flowers on the 25th November, and this is the focus of this pack. However, we are introducing an additional element to this activity in the form of Coffee Morning Fundraisers. An overview of implementing these events is included below. The Blooming Strong campaign allows you to mix and match the elements of the campaign that work best for your locality. Blooming Strong nominations Around a month before the date (of November 25th) award nomination forms (template included in pack) should be distributed to local partnership agencies. It is important to point out that both survivors and women working with survivors can be nominated. It could be in recognition for a particular struggle that has been overcome or going the extra mile to support someone. You will need a central address to which nominations can be returned. Each nominated individual receives a Blooming Strong flower (award) in the post, along with a letter signed by the local organiser explaining the reason for their nomination (template included in this pack). Try and ensure that these arrive in the post on the 25th November. The letter enclosed explains further about this element of the campaign. Flowers Flowers should be ordered well in advance of the day, in order that they can be prepared ready for the 25th. We have selected purple and green silk fabric Gerberas to represent the colours used by the Suffragettes. Details of product and supplier are listed in the attached merchandise sheet. We hand out single flowers with a blooming strong label attached (tag image included in pack). We have found that you can distribute around flowers in a single area in around an hour. On the day (November 25th) Giving out flowers This is a really positive event and great to include local service providers. Pick a local place where foot traffic is likely to busy (eg city centre, transport hub) Arrange a time to gather, lunch times are good, or before the school run. Arrive at the point with the flowers that have had the Blooming Strong labels attached. Distribute the flowers (one each) to local women explaining that we are celebrating how Blooming Strong women are to mark the UN day to eliminate violence against women.

5 Running a local campaign The reaction is very positive; women are not usually celebrated for their strength! It s not unusual to get some disclosures which is another reason to have local service providers present. It s also useful to have some publicity cards/flyers about local services available. We would recommend a minimum of 3 staff distributing the flowers. Of course, Blooming Strong activity can be carried out on other dates throughout the year, feel free to do so. Coffee morning / Afternoon tea Fundraiser or Awareness Campaign This year (2017) we are introducing Blooming Strong Coffee Morning Fundraisers (could be afternoon tea or evening events). These can be held on the day of the 25th or during the 16 days of activism (November 25th December 10th). In essence, the idea is to host a social gathering event which brings women together to celebrate their strength and raise awareness for the Blooming Strong campaign and your chosen service/s. Cakes and drinks can be donated and then sold to raise funds, along with other fundraising opportunities. Standing Together have produced a separate Coffee Morning fundraiser pack which contains everything you would need to run your event, including: posters to display, VAWG information sheets, flowers to hand out, games and other support material. A standard pack is available for the small donation of 25 (larger packs for bigger events are also available please enquire). This is a great opportunity to get together for chats, and networking around a great cause to celebrate Strong Women! It would be wonderful to build up a network of coffee mornings throughout your local area, to raise awareness and funds for your selected local service. PR and Other Fundraising You may want to let local press know about your events so that they can cover them, it s a good opportunity to talk about what your local services offer. Please share the Blooming Strong logo. If you are taking photos of your event or promoting on Twitter, please use the hashtag #BloomingStrong. You may wish to purchase some of the Blooming Strong merchandise to either sell on the day or at other local events, this can help raise funds for local services. You can then add the desired amount to the cart and check out. At Standing Together, we have found that we can distribute around 300 stems in an hour in a busy area of London, with 3-4 staff. We order from who have details of the tag on file. Ask for the Standing Together Blooming Strong Tag, according to the numbers you require. Single tags to be attached to individual flower stem by campaign organisers in advance of the 25th November, ready for distribution. Tags costs around 100 for 900. Allow a week for delivery once order placed.
