3 I immigrated to this country from El Salvador when I was 17. Like everyone, I came looking for a better future, better opportunities. My dad and my mom were always in the home. They were very strict very strong when it came to discipline. Trying to make them happy was a strong marker in my life, but I lived another life when they were not looking. I started working at a very early age. I started drinking, started smoking marijuana. I thought I could have control over that because I worked and I drank. It got to the point where it seemed normal. I was really someone who was very unhappy. I was looking for nothing less than to escape my reality. I started using cocaine and that was what really made me lose control. I couldn t go to work anymore. It went from being an addiction to being an abuse. I d wake up drugged. It led me to the streets. I came looking for a meal [Living on the streets] has been one of the most horrible experiences. Never in my life would I have imagined that I would have ended up desolated, worried and without hope. Practically dead physically and spiritually. Someone on the streets [told me about Los ngeles Mission]. When I came, I didn t know how it was. ll I knew was they provided food. That first day, that meal after putting up with hunger for almost a week, receiving a warm meal made a tremendous change in me. I was desperate, and I really came to the Mission looking for that meal, I would have never imagined that they would have a [rehabilitation] program. I found a reason to live Part of the program is education. [The Mission] tries to help us obtain new abilities. t first I was nervous and didn t want to get my GED, but they told me to try. fter more than 28 years of not completing anything and leaving things that I hadn t completed I did it! [Now] I really feel stable. I have security. The Mission gave me food, they gave me transportation [to take my GED], they gave me help through encouragement in all aspects so that I could do that. Everyone that works in the Mission is always saying, How are you doing? You can do it! Keep moving forward! There are many things that I felt that I could never do. The Mission paid for my GED and I would have never been able to afford it in my condition. Part of what I have found at the Mission is a reason to live. My next hope is to have a balanced life, seeking God first, getting a job to provide for my children and keeping busy helping others. I am so grateful for all of the people that help with the Mission...mine is a life that they have saved. I found the help that I needed... what I couldn t obtain anywhere else, I obtained it here. ~Herbert Velis UTI GRDUTE Promoting Lifelong Learning The Los ngeles Mission s two-year Urban Training Institute is much more than a recovery program it is a comprehensive healing process designed to restore lives broken by the devastating effects of homelessness and substance abuse. s a crucial part of the process, the Mission offers a wide range of academic classes, including dult Basic Education (to improve skills in subjects like math and reading), GED test preparation, computer literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL) and more. Because while hope begins with a hearty meal, that s just the beginning of a lifelong journey. Education can open doors to more opportunities and hope for a better future. Thank you for helping to support our students on the path to success. For more information on our Urban Training Institute program, visit LosngelesMission.org 2

4 nnual end-of-summer block party Giving Kids a Head Start for School Serious as life is, though, we can still find time to play! ~Herb SMITH s summer comes to a close, we are excited for our much-anticipated 13th nnual End-of-Summer Block Party to be held on ugust 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Last year, nearly 3,000 attended a number we expect to hit again this year. This wonderful event takes place right in the heart of Skid Row, transforming the street with loads of fun activities for needy kids and their families, including games, prizes, face painting, slides, bounce houses and even a dunk tank. dding to the joy will be free tacos and burgers, provided by King Taco and In-N-Out. But perhaps the most highly anticipated part of the day is when volunteers distribute backpacks to eagerly waiting children. nd every backpack is full of books and school supplies to help kids start the school year off right. Food. Fun. Smiles. nd hope. mid all the laughter and excitement, the End-of-Summer Block Party also sends a powerful message to the community. [It s] our most important event of the year because it says, Go to school, stay in school and break the cycle of homelessness, says Los ngeles Mission President Herb Smith. Families need education as a basic life skill to navigate jobs in an increasingly skilled workforce. Serious as life is, though, we can still find time to play! nd that s exactly what everyone does who attends the End-of-Summer Block Party, from kids and their parents to Mission staff and volunteers. It s a unique and memorable way to help families in our community who are struggling to make ends meet. We are so grateful for the sponsors and volunteers who make this special day possible. It s because of their help that we can provide backpacks to so many kids in need. Corporate sponsors like U.S. Bank, mcor and others provide many donations and supplies each year. In addition to fun and school supplies, health screenings will also be provided at the block party for anyone interested in receiving them. It will be a great day and a fantastic chance to start out a new season of learning, growth and hope. Help Fill a Backpack Just $10 You can help fill a backpack for our End-of- Summer Block Party and fill a kid s heart with hope. It takes just $10 to help provide the supplies children need to thrive in school, including: notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, highlighters, folders and more. While many items have been generously donated by corporate sponsors, the demand is always so great. ny amount you can give will go far to help children and their struggling families start the school year off right. To make a special donation to fill a backpack for our End-of-Summer Block Party, please return your gift with the attached form, making sure to check the box to sponsor a backpack.

5 Signs of Hope By Dr. Charles P. Morgan When you re living on the streets, getting a good education feels like the least of your worries. Yet, education is a key to ending homelessness and breaking the cycle of poverty that traps so many of the people we serve at the Los ngeles Mission. That s why we offer a holistic approach to education through spiritual, academic, vocational, and life skills classes. We work hard to create a nurturing environment and provide positive educational opportunities. strong focus on lifelong learning Through our partnership with Belmont Community dult School, men and women in our program have an opportunity to enrich their reading skills, earn their GED, and develop skills through online courses. nd of course, our End-of- Summer Block Party allows us to reach children and families in need as we provide the basic necessities for school including backpacks, supplies, and a healthy dose of encouragement. Without your support, these programs and more would not be possible. Thank you for helping to give hope to our friends and neighbors on Skid Row. Your gifts have more of an impact than you may know. Feeding Hungry Hearts Throughout the Year s they have for the past five years, King Taco Restaurants and In-N-Out Burger will once again be on hand at our End-of-Summer Block Party, serving up delicious tacos and burgers to hungry kids and adults. But that s not all. Both companies also generously provide free meals once a month at the Mission, faithfully donating time and food to feed the hungry and homeless in our community. I want to say a huge thank you to In-N-Out Burger and King Taco Restaurants for the loyal service that they provide to each End-of-Summer Block Party event as well as their support throughout the year, said Ivan Klassen, the Mission s Director 4 LM Chef Carlos Castillo is surrounded by Jesus, ndres and Luis, three of the King Taco team that supports Los ngeles Mission year-round. of Community Partnerships. [Their] presence gives this event a truly special L-type experience that we just could not produce on our own. If you are interested in finding out how your company or organization can help support the Los ngeles Mission, contact Ivan Klassen at (213) ext. 325.
