Gardening is an activity that supports spiritual formation. Students Dr. Roxanne Jordan, Director are able to find times of quiet solace of the Anne Douglas Center while hoeing, digging, watering, planting, harvesting and pruning in their gardens. Long-time volunteer Jennifer Farmer integrates gardening and spirituality by hosting a monthly gardening class with students to help them explore the connections between gardening and their spiritual life, and highlights how spiritual values are symbolized in gardening activities. The Rooftop Gardening Project aligns well with our current gardening endeavors. It is also another great step toward Going Green! The rooftop garden will increase our access to fresh, healthy produce while providing our women with more opportunities to nurture their own spiritual growth, even as they tend to the vegetables in the garden. We would be so grateful for your support as we continue to grow our new program. Your gift will help with start-up costs, as well as sustaining the program. 3 A Fresh Start all the way to the finish I used to have a small business. I owned my own franchise. When the economy went bad, everything started to crumble. My husband and I ended up living with my in-laws. I was depressed to the point where I didn t want to do anything. My situation became unbearable and I needed to look for a place to go. God had his hand on me I called the Los Angeles Mission and I was able to join the Fresh Start program here at the Anne Douglas Center on April 9, And this month I will graduate and move on to the Work Start program. They really help you with everything here, it s a holistic program. If you re willing to change, you can get all the help you need. You learn how Finishing the marathon lets me know what I m capable of doing. ~LUCERO REYES FRESH START STUDENT to make smart financial decisions and are given the opportunity to heal physically, and that leads to spiritual well-being too. At the Mission you live in a community where you can really practice your faith. It s got to come from your heart I began running here at the Mission, training for the Los Angeles Marathon. We started a group with a volunteer trainer, Antonia Rout. I had never run before, but she really worked with me, encouraged me and kept me going. On my last training before the marathon I ran from the Mission to the Santa Monica pier. And I asked Antonia, This was only 20 miles, how am I ever going to run 26? And she said, It s got to come from your heart. That was the big breakthrough for me. I ran in the Los Angeles Marathon on March 9th of this year. I can t find words to express how it felt to cross the finish line or how this changed my life. I was exhilarated! The marathon was a big stretch for me. It let me know what I m capable of doing. A new state of mind I knew God to a certain extent before I came here, but now I know Him on a much deeper level. I m also grateful for my chaplain, Alma Johnson. She doesn t tell me what to do she helps me see things from God s perspective. I lost everything and more when my business failed. All the connections I ve been able to build thanks to the Mission are a gift from the Lord. The running definitely helped me physically and showed me what I could achieve. And none of this would be possible without the donors, all of us here really appreciate what they do for us. Now I have a new state of mind. 2

4 Urban Fitness 911 Encouraging health in body, mind and spirit Volunteer trainer Antonia Rout Giving Lucero a fresh start Volunteer trainer Antonia Rout has been running for 30 years. Antonia worked closely with Lucero Reyes to help her achieve what she had never before dreamed possible completing her first full marathon! Here Antonia shares what it was like to train with Lucero: I started working with Luci (Lucero) about a year before the Los Angeles Marathon. I told her I knew she could do it and I was going to be with her the whole way. She wasn t too excited in the beginning, but I think when the journey began to feel a little more real to her she embraced it. Our long runs were very challenging. I remember one time that we ran from the Mission to Hancock Park and out and around downtown L.A. Most of the route was all incline and it was tough but I encouraged Lucero by reminding her that less than 1% of people in the world ever attempt a marathon...i knew she could do it. ~ANTONIA ROUT VOLUNTEER once we made it past the hump, Luci got this surge of energy and finished the run strong. She said she felt pride knowing what she had just achieved. Before Luci came to the Los Angeles Mission she was homeless and hopeless, wandering the streets of Long Beach. She had no faith in her future. But the day of the Long Beach Half Marathon one of the races she ran to prepare her for the full L.A. Marathon she said she ran along the same places that used to only remind her of sorrow and pain, but this time she felt stronger. She felt good about herself, she felt like she was finally turning a corner and like she was getting a fresh start at life! Volunteers like Antonia have a tremendous impact on students lives. Do you have skills, talents or knowledge you would like to share to help them on their journey to new life? If you re interested in learning about how you can get involved, please contact Sheila Moweta at (213) , ext At the Mission, we believe that helping our students get healthy and fit physically is an integral part of their overall recovery. To that end, we are proud to partner with Urban Fitness 911 that brings Equinox West LA Branch Fitness Club trainers and Life Bites life coaching to offer a wellness fitness training for our students. The founder of Urban Fitness 911, Veronica Everett- Boyce, said, The program is teaching the students how to take care of their bodies. You cannot do the mental without the physical you need both. Mental benefits from exercise Urban Fitness 911 presents a unique opportunity for the students to engage in an intense physical fitness workout with professional Equinox fitness trainers who challenge them to reach their personal fitness goals. Research indicates that exercise is an excellent way to decrease stress and can be very beneficial in preventing drug abuse relapse, said Dr. Roxanne Jordan, director of the Anne Douglas Center. Students lives are being changed physically, relationally and psychologically. Jose, a participating student, said it helped him with his anxiety and depression. My self-esteem is much better, he said. The group is like a little family. Everybody encourages each other to keep going. It s a really good program. About 40 students have participated each week since we launched the program on February 3, The Mission is deeply grateful for this partnership and we look forward to seeing the program grow in the future. Your gifts help support life-changing programs like Urban Fitness 911 that encourage health in body, mind and spirit. Thank you!

5 Signs of Hope The Los Angeles Mission provides holistic healing and help for people who are homeless, hungry and hurting. By holistic we mean that we seek to address the needs of the whole person mental, physical, emotional, spiritual. Men and women who turn to us for help need coping skills and life-management tools to successfully negotiate the effects of trauma, addictions, developmental and mental health issues in the long term, throughout the rest of their lives. We have learned through extensive experience in working with our Skid Row friends and neighbors that there is a wide spectrum of issues that confront and inhibit an individual s Lasting change requires recovery process. healing in all areas of If lasting change our students lives. is to occur, healing must take place in all areas of our students lives. Keeping our students on track Through our Fresh Start program, we help students renew their physical health and improve social skills, provide educational opportunities to attain GEDs, offer professional counseling services from trained clinicians from the Chicago School of Psychology, and bring in professionals from prominent financial institutions as volunteers to teach money management and budgeting. Expanding services to include a continuum of care is crucial to providing the post-graduation support that helps our students stay on track in pursuit of a successful future. It is our privilege to serve, and an honor to have your partnership in our life-changing work. Thank you. Dr. Charles P. Morgan, VP of Program A Father s Day reflection: Reunified! This is the month when we celebrate our dads but for many of our students, it can be a painful time as well, bringing up memories of broken and difficult relationships. However, as wounds from the past begin to heal, we rejoice to see students reuniting with fathers or with their own children. One student, Jorge Leon, Jr., tells his story: I am 58 years old and I arrived at the Mission on June 4, I had no relationship with my father and brother because of my drug addictions. Since Faith, obedience and love brought me back together with my father and brother. ~ JORGE LEON, JR., STUDENT 4 I ve been at the Mission, I ve been able to change my habits. I have become more humble and loving towards other people. Faith, obedience and love brought me back together with my father and brother. I have regained my life and after I depart from the Mission, I am looking forward to starting my journey together with my father, brother, sisters and children. The Mission has given me a new meaning for life. It has given me a foundation to build on and showed me that with God, everything is possible. Thank you for helping to change lives and bring healing not just to individuals, but to whole families. God bless you!
