3 Page 3 Did you know? Newsletter WI 4-H Youth Development Policy Update September 16, 2016 There have been several minor edits to the WI 4-H Youth Development Policies to provide clarity. Below are the changes in the state policies for WI 4-H. All information is online in Sawyer County Copies are available upon request. In red below are the following sections which had minor edits: Participation B. Adult Participation Options #2 Volunteers serve at the request of UW-Extension and that request can be withdrawn at any time. Membership B. Membership and Participation #1 Youth must annually sign the WI 4-H Youth Development Code of Conduct. Con sequences for violating any part of this Code of Conduct may include, but are not limited to: Removal from participation in the event in which the Code of Conduct has been violated (at the individual s expense) Suspension of membership Sanctions on participation in future 4-H events Forfeiture or repayment of financial support for the event Loss of status as a member in good standing. #2 Member in good standing is a youth who abides by the Code of Conduct and meets group or educational project participation requirements and deadlines. #4 Youth must qualify for participation in regional, state, or national 4-H competitions through their county of membership This statement does not prohibit a county from using an event in another county as the place where their members qualify for a regional or state competition. It does mean that members must be selected as representatives of only their county of membership, regardless of the location of the qualifying experience. Youth must be enrolled in 4-H at the time the event/program occurs. Participation is limited to those members who are in good standing with their local 4-H club and county.

5 Page 5 Celebrate National 4-H week by joining a 4-H Club. The 4-H club is where you learn leadership, citizenship and life skills. 4-H membership is free in Sawyer County. You will learn to conduct meetings, make motions, vote on issues that affect your club membership, elect officers and discuss topics of interest, conduct service learning projects. 4-H experiences are designed to address the four essential elements of positive youth development: Belonging, Mastery, Generosity and Independence. You learn to give back to your community. 4-H members get involved in volunteer projects to protect the environment, mentor younger children, help others and learn by doing, the 4-H motto. Becoming a 4-H club member gives you an opportunity to learn and practice leadership. Project meetings are designed for you to learn about areas of interest to you like arts and crafts, rabbits, archery, leather crafts or foods. In order to enter in the annual county fair in the junior (youth) division, you must be enrolled in that project area. If the county 4-H Program does not have a project leader in the area you wish to learn, you are able to work with your family to determine how you will learn about that project. In other words, you take the lead and decide how you will learn about that project area. Project listings are available on line at Enrollment in 4-H is done annually; To enroll, you first join a 4-H club: Winter Evergreens, Stone Lake, 4-Leaf Clover, Clover Power, Outdoor Adventures or LCO After School. Next, you select a(n) project(s). Projects may be added/dropped by May 1. You must be in 3rd grade to enroll in large animal projects. Project/club leaders are certified/trained adult volunteers and mentor you in your club/project area. Other 4-H clubs may be formed. To be a recognized 4-H club, you must have a certified adult 4- H volunteer leader, five or more youth from at least three families, an educational plan (Charter), youth involved in leadership and decision making, meet regularly (8 to 12 times a year), have written guidelines that govern the club and be open to any youth for membership. Assistance with all of the details is available from UWEX 4-H Youth Development Agent, Lori Laberee. There are many ways for your family to be involved in 4-H. Parents, guardians and caregivers play an important role in ensuring kids have opportunities for learning. First, be active in your 4-H community club. Find a 4-H club that meets the needs of you and your family. Then, support the 4-H Club volunteer leaders and youth by regularly attending and participating in meetings. Members in good standing attend 50% of their club meeting/activities/events.

Sawyer County 4-H Clubs, Inc., in response to supporting positive youth development, recognizes that Sawyer County is one of many counties across our state and nation that has the good fortune to offer the 4-H program in our community. 4-H has a strong history of creating opportunities and environments that assist young people in becoming healthy, self-confident, constructive adults. Our mission in 4-H, no matter what the setting, is to support programs and activities involving youth and adults to promote positive youth development. The Sawyer County 4-H Leaders Association, in consideration of its commitment to all youth, their families, and our community, issues the following statement. The Sawyer County 4-H Leaders Association supports the positive and successful development of all youth. Recent statistical evidence show widespread and increasing use of alcohol and other drugs among school age children in Sawyer County. In response, the Sawyer County 4-H Leaders Association encourages all sponsors of family-orientated public events to consider adopting an alcohol-free policy. We are calling on each of you to do all that you and your organizations can to ensure that we plan and provide the most positive environment possible at all of our public events.
