1 Winter 2018/2019 Newsletter Autism Community, Cold weather is here, and we are ready for a new year! We are so grateful for everyone that volunteered for and participated in the Miracle League of the Lakeshore s Trick or Treat Party at the Baymont Inn & Suites Lakefront, Trunk or Treat at Knollwood, and the Ugly Sweater Run. We had so much fun at all of these events and are so thankful for everyone involved from participants to volunteers to sponsors and donors we have such a wonderful community! 2019 will be a new year of opportunity to help and grow. We will continue to fulfill our mission with open arms and open ears to accommodate to suggestions offered to help us support the needs of individuals with autism, their families, and the communities that they live in. All three support group meetings will be held on the FIRST Sunday of each month from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM at 702 State Street in Manitowoc, WI. -Parent/Caregiver Support Group: Second Floor Meeting Room -Friendship Group: Third Floor Dome Meeting Room -Teen Friendship Group: Third Floor Learning Center *Note: No support group meetings will be held in December due to the holiday seasons* New Support Group! Box 2071 Manitowoc, WI PARENT/CAREGIVER SUPPORT MEETINGS Held on the second Sunday of each month at our office location in Manitowoc from 1-2:30 PM. For Parent/Caregiver meetings, every other month will be an open topic meeting. Please check out our event listing for information on guest speakers. Free child care provided on site Interested in hearing speakers on specific topics? Contact us and let us know! ASL FRIENDSHIP GROUP Our Friendship Group is a socialization group for young adults with high functioning autism that currently meets at the same time and location as the Teen Friendship and Parent/Caregiver support meetings. Meeting night participation includes formal and informal activities and discussions to promote social skills and friendships. The Friendship Group also offers outings throughout the year. TEEN FRIENDSHIP GROUP For individuals with autism ages 13-17, this support group will offer insight and education on transitioning, emotional regulation, and other skills as well as promoting friendships, socialization, and communication in a safe and fun environment. The group leader may organize outings throughout the year that support friendship and social skills. Parent or guardian permission slips required to join group and to attend each outing. SCHOLARSHIPS & STIPENDS ASL has established a limited number of scholarships in the following areas: Friendship Group, Continuing Education, Conference or Training Workshop Stipends, Special Projects, etc. Please contact the office for stipend forms or more information. Weather Notice: Meetings and events will be canceled due to inclement weather with at least a 3-hour notice upon a majority vote of the ASL Board of Directors Please contact us or check out our website or Facebook page for cancellation notices. 2

ASL is currently looking for dedicated, hard-working people to join our Board of Directors. We invite you to check out our monthly board meetings to see what we re up to, and contact us for a board member application if interested. This is a great chance to give back to your community and be a part of something wonderful! Have experience in finances? Consider our Treasurer position! Be a Volunteer! ASL is completely run by volunteers and could not be more grateful for the amazing community that helps us fulfill our mission. Ugly Sweater Run 2018 Call (920) for an appointment 3120 Memorial Drive Two Rivers, WI Brew City Crafters LLC presents their First Annual Manty Makers Market where 75 artists, crafters and vendors will present their works on Saturday, March 23rd, 2019 at the Manitowoc County Fairgrounds in the Merchants Building. This is a free-to-attend show and ASL is signed up to be a vendor! Time: 5-7 PM Location: Above & Beyond Children s Museum 902 N 8 th St, Sheboygan, WI Reel Movies for Real Needs Marcus Theatres Reel Movies for Reel Needs is a specially designed program to serve families with special needs such as autism or other challenges, who seldom attend movies. Reel Movies for Real Needs creates a welcoming and comfortable environment lower sound, lights up where families with children who need accommodations will be able to share the experience of seeing family friendly films at a theatre. Time: 10:30 AM Location: 1000 Kepler Dr, Green Bay, WI Sensory Morning at Sky Zone Appleton This event is held every 2 nd and 4 th Sunday of the month. Sky Zone turns down the music and reduces distractions for the comfort of their extra special jumpers. They welcome children and adults with special needs, their families, and their friends to jump!
