2 President's Message Hello 4-H members and volunteers. It was great to see so many new members come out to our Orientation Night and thanks to all the volunteers who came to meet them and help introduce them to 4-H. This year promises to be fun and a great learning experience for all. Please take advantage of all the opportunities 4-H has to offer, whether it is attending your club meetings, Discovery Day, a camp or a social activity. Meet our members, both old and new and get to know our volunteers. Visit the website and see the exciting line up of events to come this year. I am sure you will love 4-H as much as we all do. A few clubs have already started and many more will be starting in the next couple of weeks. 3 Sarah Dowling I like 4-H because I get to learn stuff I never knew and I can meet new friends. 4-H is Loved I love 4-H because you can join a variety of clubs. I also love 4-H because you aren t restricted to the types of clubs you can join. Some clubs have an age limit to keep you safe. I love 4-H because I get to learn to do by doing. After all, that is our motto Angela Meise L&A 4-H ASSOCIATION MEETING Our next Association meeting will be held on May 8 th, 2012 at Newburgh Hall. The meeting will start at 7:00pm. All Volunteers, Parents & Senior Members are welcome to attend. If you would like to go paperless and receive your Newsletters by , please Jenn or Jonathan. We will be sending the Newsletters out as a PDF file as they are much smaller. If you cannot read a PDF for whatever reason, let us know and we will send it to you in another format. Everyone that chooses to go paperless will have their names added to a draw for a cool 4-H prize!!! 4-H has taught me a lot about myself and my animals! It s really fun! Emily Williams I like 4-H because you learn from doing. You meet new people and you have a better perspective of things in your youth and you have many adventures. 4 Kaelan Leonhardt I love 4-H because you can learn skills like how to care for rabbits, while some people who don t have 4-H in their lives have problems or get stuck trying to figure those things out. Another reason is you become involved in a lot of hands on experience which makes 4-H even more fun and interesting. The multiple field trips you take in each club you join adds to the enjoyment of the skills you are learning or at least helps you to learn them. L&A 4-H Dairy Club The 4-H Dairy Club held its organizational meeting on Wednesday, April 25 th with 19 members in attendance. A special welcome was extended to many new members and their families. The club executive was elected as follows: President Courtney O Neill Vice President Jesslyn Millen Secretary Brianna Oxford- Harrow Press Reporter/Photographer Kaitlin Kimmett & Kaitlynn Lappan The members provided some good ideas for meeting topics and decided upon their meeting dates for the summer. The next meeting will be held on: Monday, May 7, :30 PM At Frisklane Holsteins 2424 Cty Rd 11 Selby Ont. (Approximately 2 KMs West of Selby) Our meeting will cover calf feeding, judging and calf selection. If you have any questions feel free to contact Kevin ( ) or Joe ( ). Spring Crafts In the spring crafts club we made an Easter decoration. We made Easter plates which is a plate with grass on it. We also decorated it with some eggs and we put a glass bunny in the middle of the plate. We also made Easter chocolates. Some were white, yellow and brown. We were put into groups to make them. We made different Easter things like Easter eggs, chicks and bunnies. After that we had to put them in the freezer to harden. After that we put some on our plates. There was some left over for us to eat. They were so good. We also made cards. It could be any type of card. We also had cupcakes made by one of our leaders. Yum! You ll get to make crafts, learn about livestock, and try your hand at trivia and judging. WHEN: May 26, 2012 from 9:00am to 3:00pm (Deadline to register is May 11, registration form available on the website (4-H Ontario, youth, camps, discovery day) or contact Kathy McNichols if you don t have access to the internet. WHERE: Hillcrest Community Centre, Belleville, ON WHO: Discovery Days are for everyone! All youth ages 9-12 are invited to attend, members and friends. There will likely be members there from several counties. HOW MUCH: What a bargain, only $10 for the day. WHY: To have a great time, learn more about 4-H, make new friends and have fun!! 6 Judge-IT Day 2012 Judge-It Day is a regional ( 9 counties) day of judging, games, making new friends and having fun. This event is open to all members and you may bring a friend who is of 4-H age for the same low price of $10 each and is being held this year on Saturday June 16. The day includes a ham and eggs breakfast when we get to Bobcaygeon ( in our host county Kawartha- Lakes/ Haliburton), snacks, lunch, a banquet and prizes. We will be using a bus if we have enough interest. The bus is partially paid for by the Region 3 Board but there may be a small additional cost to members who use it. The deadline for registration is May 25 th. If you are interested in attending this great opportunity, please contact Kathy McNichols at or me at kathymcnichols@gmail.com to have the registration form ed or mailed to you. This is a really fun day and a wonderful learning experience! Do you love to play games? Do you enjoy fun competition? Do you have a little knowledge about a lot of things? The Go For The Gold (GFTG) competition is a game-show style trivia game featuring questions from official 4-H project manuals. It is a great experience for 4-H members to increase their knowledge of 4-H project materials, agriculture, food, community events and much more, all while doing so in a team atmosphere! Join the Lennox & Addington Go for the Gold Team. Meetings will be on Sunday evenings starting on May 27th.(not every week). The regional competition will be held on August 18 th, 2012 with up to 9 counties competing. Winners of the Regional competition go on to compete in the provincial games at the Royal Winter Fair.
