Ridgewood Avenue, Suite 107, South Daytona, FL (386) Fax (386) Volusia County Intergroup Website: aadaytona.org A.A. s Responsibility Statement I am responsible. When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that: I am responsible. Fit Spiritual Condition Step Ten suggests we continue to take personal inventory and continue to set right any new mistakes as we go along. We vigorously commenced this way of living as we cleaned up the past. We have entered the world of the Spirit. Our next function is to grow in understanding and effectiveness. This is not an overnight matter. It should continue for our lifetime. Continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them. We discuss them with someone immediately and make amends quickly if we have harmed anyone. Then we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we can help. Love and tolerance of others is our code We have not been sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid. That is our experience. That is how we reach so long as we keep in fit spiritual condition. It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action and rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe. We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. Much has already been said about receiving strength, inspiration, and direction from Him who has all knowledge and power. If we have carefully followed directions, we have begun to sense the flow of His Spirit into us. To some extent we have become God-conscious. We have begun to develop this vital sixth sense. But we must go further and that means more action. 3 From the Archives Recently a bag of A.A. books was dropped off at the Archives room from an unknown donor. One of the books contained an interesting article cut from the Chicago Tribune which was printed on Wednesday, August 31, The title is Calling It Quits and the banner reads True confessions aside, there s nothing chic about saying no by Sharon Stangeness. The article discusses how the increase of celebrity admissions of problems with alcohol and drug dependency and the subsequent treatment in a rehab is giving the impression that alcoholism and dependencies are not the serious problems which they are and glamorizes treatment centers as little more than stylish spas. The purpose of the article is to refute these impressions. The article begins with a statement from a counselor at the Hazelden Center in Minnesota describing what he saw in the groups he leads. I saw families ripped apart, I saw people hurt, I saw self-esteem devastated, I saw shattered lives. It continues by describing the experiences of various celebrities who sought treatment and movies which explore treatment and recovery from addictions. The growing public admissions of famous people to having recognized and sought treatment for their problem is creating a more open and frank attitude among the public. In another part of the article, concern is expressed by treatment centers about the public discussions by the individual of their treatment and recovery. This feeling of being in control can be detrimental to the further recovery of the client. Re-entering regular life after treatment is difficult and painful, and the recovering individual can experience discrimination because of their disease. The article ends with this statement from Dr. Mark McGovern, a clinical psychologist and director of outpatient services in the chemical dependency program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, No, it s not fashionable It s very hard for people to admit. The kind of people who become addicted are people who find it hard to admit failure [Calling it quits] may look fashionable from the outside but it s not from the inside. The entire article is now in the notebook where newspaper and internet articles are available to anyone who wishes to look them over. Carolyn C. 4 THE TWELVE STEPS AND THE TWELVE TRADITIONS Step Ten Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. Yesterday s Baggage For the wise have always known that no one can make much of his life until self-searching becomes a regular habit, until he is able to admit and accept what he finds, and until he patiently and persistently tries to correct what is wrong. -Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 88; Daily Reflections, p. 287 The Acid Test As we work the first nine Steps, we prepare ourselves for the adventure of a new life. But when we approach Step Ten we commence to put our A.A. way of living to practical use, day by day, in fair weather or foul. Then comes the acid test; can we stay sober, keep in emotional balance, and live to good purpose under all conditions? -Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 88; Daily Reflections, p. 284 Five C's and Five Procedures The five C's: confidence, confession, conviction, conversion, and continuance was the process of life changing undertaken by the life changer. Confidence, the new person had to have confidence in you and know you would keep his secrets. Confession, honesty about the real state of a person s life. Conviction, the seriousness of his sin and the need to free of it. Conversion, the process had to be the person s own free will in the decision to surrender to God. Continuance, you were responsible as a life changer to help the new person become all that God wanted him to be. Only God could change a person and the work of the life changer had to be done under God's direction. -Oxford Group, Tradition Ten Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy. TRADITIONS CHECKLIST from the A.A. Grapevine. These questions were originally published in the A.A. Grapevine in conjunction with a series on the Twelve Traditions that began in November 1969 and ran through September While they were originally intended primarily for individual use, many A.A. groups have since used them as a basis for wider discussion. Questions to Ponder 1. Do I ever give the impression that there really is an A.A. opinion on Antabuse? Tranquilizers? Doctors? Psychiatrists? Churches? Hospitals? Jails? Alcohol? The federal or state government? Legalizing marijuana? Vitamins? Al-Anon? Alateen? 2. Can I honestly share my own personal experience concerning any of those without giving the impression I am stating the A.A. opinion? 3. What in A.A. history gave rise to our Tenth Tradition? 4. Have I had a similar experience in my own A.A. life? 5. What would A.A. be without this Tradition? Where would I be? 6. Do I breach this or any of its supporting Traditions in subtle, perhaps unconscious, ways? 7. How can I manifest the spirit of this Tradition in my personal life outside A.A.? Inside A.A.?

5 HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE Your Editor s Corner A Change of Perspective I was recently graced to share a little piece of my maintenance program with a young fellow A.A. member. When I did, I remembered how unbelievably valuable information shared along the way has been, and continues to be, in my spiritual and emotional growth. When I was about 30 days sober, a very feisty addictions counselor shared a copy of the Humility Prayer with me. Little did she know, or maybe she did, just how powerful this short little list would become. At the time, I needed to hear every word. I needed to say every word. I needed to believe every word. I needed direction through every word. All that I am aware of is this, when I read this prayer in the morning today, I want to live every word. What tools do you have in your toolbox today? In help of others, what tools have you shared with your fellows today? In fellowship, The Editor Humility Prayer Dear Lord, PLEASE. 1) Deliver me from the compulsive habit of thinking that I must always have something to say on every subject on every occasion. 2) Release me from the craving of trying to straighten out everyone s affairs. 3) Restrain my mind from the recital of boring, endless and pointless details..give me the wings to get to the point. 4) And though I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of others help me to endure them with patience and tolerance. 5) Give me reasonable doubt and less cocksureness when my memory and viewpoint seem to clash with those of an opposite opinion. 6) Teach me the glorious lesson that sometimes I may be wrong. 7) Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and unexpected talents in people. 8) Give me the grace to tell them so. 9) Help me to be reasonably good, honest, cheerful but not a saint (because we all know some of them are hard to live with). 10) Teach me to be thoughtful but not moody helpful but not bossy, - observing but not critical. 11) And though with my vast store of self-proclaimed wisdom it seems a pity not to use it all up - please remember, Lord, I want some friends left in the end. 12) So, teach me to be ever grateful and let me never forget POETRY POETRY CORNER CORNER Honest Humility by Allen S. Through prayer we summons power needed to overcome adversity creeping up like shadows growing at dusk. Taken back to prior memories keep the present flowing with that urge to escape that dreadful quicksand of guilt and remorse. No amount of will power has the ability for any human to regain direction once lost and replaced with self-will. Falling short is part of being drawn into true humility and being humble enough for admitting simply that I don't know. God help me with willingness to do the will you have set aside in your eyes for me to grow in understanding Please share your experience, strength and hope by contributing to our newsletter.
