1 September 2016 Volusia County Intergroup Services Districts 8, 19, 20, 21 and S. Ridgewood Avenue, Suite 107, South Daytona, FL (386) Fax (386) Volusia County Intergroup Website: aadaytona.org A.A. s Responsibility Statement I am responsible. When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that: I am responsible. First Year Miracle About two weeks before my first A.A. anniversary, I found myself sitting alone with my thoughts in a hotel room in Charlotte, NC. Even today, I still get a vicarious pleasure knowing that hindsight isn t always 20/20. My understanding of events comes after the event occurs, and sometimes, better understanding comes far after that. On the evening of September 10, 2001, I had gotten myself into an argument with the guy I was dating. I remember hobbling down to the hotel lobby, and in full view of passersby, I sat in a fetal position crying to my sponsor on the phone. All of the sudden, one of those passersby pitifully glanced at me and stated, It looks like you need a strong margarita! In that moment, I knew that I had made a big mistake. With stern politeness, the voice on the other end of the phone asked, How did you get to Charlotte, NC? My simple response was, I took a plane!! My sponsor s simple response was, Then I suggest that you take a plane home. I took my sponsor s suggestion and booked myself on a 7:00am flight out of North Carolina the next morning. I called my mother from the Charlotte airport on September 11 th and advised her that I was returning to Orlando to, once again, move my things and start a different chapter. Although I was crying my eyes out in the airport nine short days before my 1 year A.A. anniversary, I thought that maybe there was a lesson to be learned from all of this. At the time, I had no idea of the enormity of the lesson. When I touched down in Orlando on September 11, 2001 and met up with my ride home, I was babbling on about all of my problems and how I was about to change my life. The person who picked me up looked at me and said, Do you have any idea what's happening in this world right now? It was revealed to me that one plane crashed into the World Trade Center, and as we got into the car, a second plane hit. Who would have thought that I d be newly sober during one of the greatest tragedies in US history and somehow manage to make it through without picking up a drink? Who would have thought that one day my babble and my stuff would simply become just that? I wrote down these thoughts a year ago while I sat on the beach in my favorite island of Aruba. I stared at the beautiful white sand and crystal blue waters in gratitude. Today, as I am approaching my 16 year A.A. anniversary, I would not trade one minute of this journey. I am forever grateful for those who have walked before me and gave me a message of hope. I say, Thank you God with a debt of gratitude that is beyond words. 3 ARCHIVES ARTICLE When an archivist finds a piece of history that is really old, they become so excited that the archivist Happy Dance is called for. That is what happened after sorting of the District 8 papers that we received a couple of months ago. One file contains correspondence between the district and the North Florida Area Conference dating from November 1964 to March These papers contain meeting minutes, a list of officers, and a list of GSR s in The groups listed for District #5 (the Halifax area) are Daytona Beach, Lakeshore, Peninsular, Deland, Kingston, New Smyrna and Ormond Beach groups. A resolution passed 27 June 1965 declared that two conventions a year be held, one in the North conference area and one in the corresponding South conference area. Another file has District #8 correspondences from March 1963 to June In a letter dated Nov 1964, Governor Farris Bryant declares November 29 through December 5 as Alcoholic Information Week. There will be a special meeting planned for Monday, November 30 th at 8 pm at the City Island Recreation Center. This meeting will have a forum of speakers and laymen, and it will be an information meeting for the general public. The main topic in 1965 was plans to celebrate the 30 th Anniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous. There was a special meeting for all groups in the area at the clubhouse on Foote Court on Wednesday, June 30 th at 8 pm. Two speakers from out of town participated, and the meeting was followed by a light buffet. Recognition in an editorial in the News Journal was requested and published on June 25 as well as an article in the Orlando Sentinel. Announcements were placed at the local radio and TV station. Another interesting piece of correspondence dated September 1965 was a bid from the Voyager Beach Hotel for the June 1966 conference. The room rate will be $9.00 single, $14.00 double. Coffee will be $7.50 an urn. Banquet will be $3.75 per person including tax and tip. The main menu item will be turkey. This is important history of A.A. in Volusia County. Thank you District #8 for the opportunity to view and store these wonderful papers! -Carolyn C. 4 THE TWELVE STEPS AND THE TWELVE TRADITIONS Step Nine Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Hard on Ourselves, Considerate of Others We cannot disclose anything to our wives or our parents which will hurt them and make them unhappy. We have no right to save our own skins at their expense. Such damaging parts of our story we tell to someone else who will understand, yet be unaffected. The rule is, we must be hard on ourselves, but always considerate of others. -As Bill Sees It, p. 240; Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 74 Good judgement will suggest that we ought to take our time in making amends to our families. It may be unwise at first to rehash certain harrowing episodes. While we may be quite willing to reveal the very worst, we must be sure to remember that we cannot buy our own peace of mind at the expense of others. -As Bill Sees It, p. 240; Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 84 September 11 MAKING AMENDS Above all, we should try to be absolutely sure that we are not delaying because we are afraid. -Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 87 To have courage, to be unafraid, are gifts of my recovery. They empower me to ask for help and to go forth in making my amends with a sense of dignity and humility. Making amends may require a certain amount of honesty that I feel I lack, yet with the help of God and the wisdom of others, I can reach within and find the strength to act. My amends may be accepted, or they may not, but after they are completed I can walk with a sense of freedom and know that, for today, I am responsible. -Daily Reflections, p Tradition Nine A.A. as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve. TRADITIONS CHECKLIST from the A.A. Grapevine. These questions were originally published in the A.A. Grapevine in conjunction with a series on the Twelve Traditions that began in November 1969 and ran through September While they were originally intended primarily for individual use, many A.A. groups have since used them as a basis for wider discussion. Questions to Ponder 1. Do I still try to boss things in A.A.? 2. Do I resist formal aspects of A.A. because I fear them as authoritative? 3. Am I mature enough to understand and use all elements of the A.A. program even if no one makes me do so with a sense of personal responsibility? 4. Do I exercise patience and humility in any A.A. job I take? 5. Am I aware of all those to whom I am responsible in any A.A. job? 6. Why doesn t every A.A. group need a constitution and bylaws? 7. Have I learned to step out of an A.A. job gracefully and profit thereby when the time comes? 8. What has rotation to do with anonymity? With humility? February 2012 "You may want what I have and be willing to go to any lengths to get it, but I am still going to run this past my sponsor. James, New Zealand Sources: Cartoon Source:

5 HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE Your Editor s Corner Taking Action to Avoid Making Direct Amends When I seek, the message is everywhere! I doubt that a group of 4 th grade students are aware of the powerful message that they carry. A simple thought that is read each morning at one of our local Volusia County Schools reminds me of how I used to react and speak, and how God would have me react and speak today. Also, the accumulation of fresh insults and injuries caused by my tongue is lessened when I practice THINK. This is the phase of my development that requires work. My ability to maintain a new freedom and a new happiness requires that I practice what was freely shared with me by 10-year-old children. What inspires you? In fellowship, The Editor True Inspiring Necessary Helpful Kind PI/CPC UPDATE! The Public Information and Cooperation with the Professional Community (PI/CPC) held its first official monthly committee meeting on Tuesday, August 2 nd. Literature rack distribution, dextox commitments, PSA for radio/tv, and much more was discussed at last month s meeting. On Tuesday, September 6, 2016 from 6:45pm 7:45pm in the classrooms at St. James Episcopal Church, 44 S. Halifax Drive, Ormond Beach, FL 32176, the committee will present an informative PowerPoint presentation! How dangerous the mind can be alone, Inside those walls of thought that roam, Induced by silence of a room, Engulfed in self-impending doom. Growing pains that linger by, It's all a part of feeling life. Let the morbid brain attacks, Reveal emotions from the past. Stirring wonder what and why? Familiar world inside the mind. Shifting reels of wakened dreams, From childhoods deleted scenes. Start the healing, let it flow, Hug the pain and feel it grow. Face the truth that made us run, As freedom paints a dawning sun.
