2 Midland Heart Courses and classes 2015 We re committed to providing a variety of training opportunities to customers who know us well and those who have no involvement with Midland Heart. Our booklet covers a range of courses and classes for you to get involved in. All locations and dates are listed in an easy to understand calendar at the back of the brochure. Courses for Midland Heart customers and non customers While the majority of our courses are open to just Midland Heart Customers some are open to everyone, customers or not. Those that are open to non customers are clearly labelled with the following stamp [] and those that are for customers only have the [Midland Heart customers] only stamp. Get involved... Be part of our customer movement and help shape the services you receive. We have a range of courses geared up to give you an insight into what we do and help you to input into the areas that matter to you. 02
3 Get to know Midland Heart [Midland Heart customers] An ideal opportunity to learn about the Midland Heart values, equality and diversity, health and safety and how to be a really effective involved customer. We ve got sessions in a variety of locations to suit all. We will be sending a personal invite to those Customer Panel and Service Improvement Group members who have not previously attended. Birmingham - 10am-2pm Friday 24 April Thursday 8 October Coventry - 10am-2pm Thursday 15 October Wolverhampton - 10am-2pm Tuesday 10 March Tuesday 13 October Cannock (Staffordshire) - 10am-2pm Thursday 19 March Tuesday 3 November Equality and Diversity [Midland Heart customers] This course will give you an overview to equality and diversity and how we both recognize and celebrate it at Midland Heart. An already popular course, you ll leave with a better understanding the subject and learn key skills that will enable you to encourage others to widen their understanding. Limited spaces available. Birmingham - 11am-3pm Thursday 16 April Thursday 12 November Recruitment and Selection Masterclass [Midland Heart customers] A very popular course that will enable you to take part in the recruitment and selection of Midland Heart staff. 4 Customer Inspector Training [Midland Heart customers] We have a team of customers trained up to inspect buildings and grounds ensuring the performance of our environmental contractors, including the cleaning, grounds maintenance and window cleaning services are completed to a tip top standard. Being a customer inspector can take as little or as much time as you wish it to and it s an excellent way to build your skills. You can be a customer inspector in your own area and we will give you all the support you require. If you re interested in joining the team, just give us a call and we ll book you on to our training course. Birmingham am pm Wednesday 25 February Monday 14 September Skills for running Your Committee [] For members of residents groups and people involved in committee work Get the basics in the art of chairing meetings, being an effective and efficient treasurer, being an organised secretary and administrator. Limited places available. Birmingham - 10am-2pm Wednesday 25 March Thursday 9 November How To Be A Buddy [Midland Heart customers] Getting involved isn t scary, but for newer customers, especially when coming into an established group in unfamiliar surroundings it can be daunting. This course is perfect for those with more experience of our groups and panels to feel confident and comfortably in supporting new members. Limited spaces available. Birmingham - 11am-2pm Thursday 22 October *NEW* Presentation Skills [] Presenting information to large groups of people can be a challenging task. This hands-on course will give you the skills and knowledge to get your point across in an engaging and informative way. Perfect if you are new to speaking in public or just want to brush up your skills. 04 Birmingham - 11am-3pm Thursday 1 October
5 *NEW* Involving Customers in Procurement [Midland Heart customers] Involving our customers in the procurement of goods and services can lead to benefits for all. As an organisation, Midland Heart has a vision to maximise social value from our contracts as well as looking at financial value. This updated course will cover the Midland Heart approach to procurement; where customers can influence and bring value to the tendering process. The session will also look at how Midland Heart works with contractors to realise the social value opportunities for our customers and neighbourhoods. Birmingham - 11am - 2pm Tuesday 12 May Understanding Housing Association Finance [] A really fantastic course, delivered by our finance guru, John Drozd, you will understand the financial basis on which housing associations operate, what constrains us and what opportunities we have. A real insight into what makes Midland Heart tick. Birmingham - 11am - 3pm Tuesday 14 July Current Challenges facing Social Housing [] Hear about the challenges that currently face social housing; the political environment that impacts upon us and the opportunities that exist for housing associations in the future. Delivered by Mel West from our Public Affairs and Policy Team this is a must to understand about the climate that Midland Heart operates within. Birmingham - 11am - 2pm Thursday 2 July 05
6 *ACCREDITED* Residents Groups in Action [ For members of residents groups and people involved in committee work Engaging with your local community can be hard work but this course aims to take away some of the pain! This course is for members of local residents groups to gain skills in arranging and promoting well attended meetings, sustaining a group, working with social media, networking. This accredited course will provide you with the skills and ideas to assist you to effectively engage in your community. Limited spaces available. Birmingham ALL INCLUSIVE WEEKEND RESIDENTIAL Friday 12 June 5pm Sunday 14 June 3pm *ACCREDITED* Tenant Involvement in Social Housing [] Gain an understanding of social housing s regulatory regime and your own role within it. Learn the skills to work collaboratively with staff and customers, understand the purpose of scrutiny and the skills required to carry it out effectively and learn how understanding performance information can enhance your involvement. Birmingham ALL INCLUSIVE WEEKEND RESIDENTIAL Friday 13 November 5pm Sunday 15 November - 3pm How to Get that Job [] Suited to people who are ready to start work, but need help and support to access the job market. Birmingham - 10am pm Wednesday 25 March Wednesday 6 May Wednesday 17 June This hands-on session will help you improve your CV, help you to complete application forms which will catch an employer s eye; We will coach you in telephone and face to face interview techniques and sign you up for MyWorkSearch which will help you access live vacancies. 06 What you will get from attending: Up to date information on applying for jobs in an informal and friendly setting. Unique access to MyWorkSearch a web based program that has been proven to increase your chances of getting the right job for you. A resource pack to refer to in your own time. Follow up support at a local job club operated by Midland Heart or one of our partners.
7 Building your confidence [] This short and friendly session will focus on practical ways that you can boost your confidence and move forward with your plans. It will cover ways to develop your strengths, how to motivate yourself, breaking down barriers to work and identifying your transferable skills for seeking employment. We think this session may be useful if you have had some time without working or have never worked. What you will get from attending: A better understanding of what motivates you and your skills. Follow up support for job seeking at a local job club operated by Midland Heart or one of our partners. Opportunity to apply for a supported work placement with Midland Heart or one of our partners or contractors (this will depend on what is available in your area). If you re good with IT you can have unique access to MyWorkSearch - a web based program that has been proven to increase your chances of getting the right job for you. Birmingham - 1pm to 2.30pm Thursday 16 April Thursday 21 May Thursday 18 June Thursday 16 July Money Management [] This course takes you through how to budget your money, prioritising your bills, getting hold of affordable furniture for your home. You will learn basic maintenance of your home including understanding your meters, and everything you need to know about fuse boxes and turning off your mains water should you need to. Importantly the session will talk about payday loans and loan sharks, and what you need to know about these type of financing. This workshop is delivered as part of the Pay Ahead, Stay Ahead programme, funded by the Big Lottery and led by Ashram Housing Association. We can match you with a Digital Champion who can show you how to use the internet at your pace. To find out more, contact our Digital Inclusion Team on Become a Digital Champion with Midland Heart Midland Heart are looking for people who are passionate about the internet to become Digital Champions and to support other people to develop their online skills. You ll get a bespoke online training course which will help you share your knowledge. Becoming a Digital Champion is ideal for anyone who wants to expand their skills and add training to their CV, as well as those who just want to get involved in their local communities. You ll make a difference to someone s life by showing them the benefit of having online skills whether it is helping someone to use a government service online, apply for a house, helping them save money on their weekly shop or enabling them to contact a relative in another country for free. If you Are willing to do an online Digital Champions training course. Enjoy using technology. Are a fairly confident, outgoing person. Have some available free time. Are a good communicator and enjoy teaching people new skills. Are able to get to suitable venues.
