It will take the form best expressed by your ideas, your experience and your commitment to service as, indeed, each member of this year s Organizing Committee stood where you are standing and made the decision to get involved. Your most difficult step will be to attend that first Committee meeting. So ask a Committee member this weekend when that first meeting is and what else this Conference is all about. April 27-29, 2018 Canandaigua, New York The Inn On The Lake I Am Responsible... When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA always to be there. And for that: I am responsible. Declaration of 30th Anniversary International Convention,
2 2 THE TWELVE STEPS OF AA 1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol that our lives had become unmanageable. 2. Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. 3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. 4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. 5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. 6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. 7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. 8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. 9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. 10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. 11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. 12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. God, Grant us the Serenity to accept the things we cannot change, Courage to change the things we can, and Wisdom to know the difference. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The Conference of the Lakes is a gathering of the recovering community in the Finger Lakes region. Here, in the heart of the Finger Lakes, we take time out each year to share and broaden our recovery experience beyond the personal and group level. We have no direct connection with any other organization or efforts. This conference is a Celebration of Recovery. Our primary purpose is to carry the AA message with Al-Anon participation and to fellowship joyously together. WELCOME! April and I would like to welcome you to the 33rd annual Conference of the Lakes. The theme for this year s conference is Archway to Freedom and is based on the 9th step. This year we bring to you questions to reflect upon - Has your creator shown you the way of patience, tolerance, kindliness, and love? How free do you want to be? The spiritual life is not a theory; we have to live it. The 9th step states Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Making amends may seem like a bitter pill to swallow, but for those serious about recovery, it can be great medicine for the spirit and soul. It is truly an amazing experience putting on this conference. We hope you enjoy this year s lineup, and that you are amazed before you are halfway through. May you find a new freedom, and a new happiness; may you comprehend the word Serenity, and may you know peace. Janice C. & April B. Conference Chair & Co-Chair DEFINITION OF AA Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. 10 3
