1 REBELS AUTO CLUB NEWSLETTER February 2014 Hello fellow Rebels. President s Message Well I guess since Phil saw his shadow that means that we will have to wait a few more weeks to get the ol hot rods out and running. I hope everyone is getting the final add-ons done to them and are ready for the summertime cruise, even though it might be awhile before they can be out. Our club Holiday party last month was great. We had good food and fellowship there. We had the garden room this year and I think it was much more open and nicer too. We had 72 members in attendance and a great time was had. The gift exchange was fun as usual and the before and after conversations were good to hear. I hoe all that attended enjoyed it and would like to hear any feed back from it with the room we had. Thanks to the committee that set up and planned it. They did a fantastic job and deserve a big hand for their efforts to make it a fun and enjoyable evening. THANKS! Hopefully things will start to pick up in the next few weeks as this is a slow time for the club activities. If any member would like to have a garage scene or there is something you would like to see then please let a board member know and we will see if we can do it. Garage scenes are a good way to show off your shop, your garage, your collections or car memorabilia. We can have a seminar on something or just gather for a social time and snacks. It s a great way to spend an afternoon talking to friends and sharing fellowship with others. I would also like to thank the old board members for their past service and thanks to the new members for joining. The future looks great as we look forward to this year, moving the club forward and carrying on the tradition of the club. Thanks for your support and actions. The swap meet is right around the corner and we are in need of your support for this. This is one of three main fund raisers that we have for he club. Please volunteer to help as we need several people to work and represent the club for the shifts that we have. It's only one day out of a few days the club needs your help to work so please step up and help. The car show is also in the works and things are moving forward with that. We will be have some meetings for the show in the next few months so keep reading the newsletter for updates on when and where. Stay safe when out driving in the winter and watch out for others. 5 by Jim Jensen Member at Large THIS MONTH WE HIGHLIGHT OUR REBELS MEMBER S Gary & Sandy Francisco The Story Begins The 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass S was bought by Sandy and Gary Francisco in April of The car was bought at the Randolph Oldsmobile dealership. The sticker price was $ At the time of purchase the car was equipped with a 350 automatic posit traction, power steering and brakes, air conditioning, an 8 track player and a vinyl top. The original top is still on the Olds. The Francisco s family waited for six weeks for the first brand new car of the marriage. Little did we know this car would become our oldest new car! This Olds was a daily driver for about 10 years. Alan Christman replaced the quarter panels in the mid 80 s due to rust around the wheel wells. It was then stored for the winter in a Quonset Hut near Crete, Ne. Gary intended to bring it home the next spring to start a redo project. As the saying goes, out of sight out of mind. It was in storage for about 10 years. Kids and life came first. Through the years the car has had the seats recovered to the original fabric by Vern Russo. The original paint color has been redone by Alan Christman. Engine updates included speeding things up from the 2 barrel to the current 4 barrel carburetor and a performance cam. This work was completed by Bill Wertz. The price of the engine redo was almost as much as the original sticker price of the car. Do I pay attention, you bet I do. Last but not least, Bill Masters one of our long standing members installed an overdrive transmission and headers. This was completed about 2 years ago. How did we ever get by without that transmission and headers? The Oldsmobile Cutlass S has been in the family for 43 years. The Olds odometer reads 91,000 miles. We take our annual trip to Des Moines, Iowa for the Good Guys Show every July. A comfy car with plenty of life left for the road. We should be in such good shape. Foot notes and thanks to: Life is short, so enjoy your cars. Sandy Francisco and Gary Francisco Alan Christman which is Sandy s brother. Love my brothers! Bill Wertz is an old friend of Gary s since high school. Vern Russo, an old friend Bill Masters, a friend from the Rebels Car Club
