1 February, 2017 Newsletter From the President s Desk Also online at eaos.org Welcome to We have a new year and I think it will be a great one. We started off the year with the Sarasota show where we had a beautiful display created by Ken Woodward and his team. Great job and we won third place. We had 11 people place plants in the display and we had a total of 49 plants and 25 plants won ribbons. We had 4 special awards in the display, which I am so proud of. Congratulations to Ken for his Most Outstanding Small Cattleya, Corey Plasek with her Most Outstanding Oncidinae, and Carol Nissen won Best Cymbidieae and Best Other Genera on her plant. We have some great growers in our group. It won t be long and the Venice show will be here on February 4th and 5th. Ken will be looking for your beautiful plants to make a great display special. Be sure and clean and stake your plants and get them ready for the show. Set up for the show will be February 3, A special thanks to Jo Ann Royal and Helen McClaskie for making our Christmas Dinner meeting at The Hills special. 2 Our speaker, Vern Bloch, gave us a very interesting program on Spotted Cats. He brought with him some really beautiful plants for sale and after his presentation, offered $2 off all his plants, which was a great bargain. He was also very generous with plants for the raffle table. We are looking forward to having Mickey Carnell speak at our February 13th meeting. Let s all come out and support our speakers and show that we really appreciate their coming to speak to us. All of our speakers have such wonderful knowledge that they share to help us grow bigger and better orchids. Hope you won t miss the meeting. Welcome to our three new members, Debi Sullivan and Jim and Lynda Seevers. I am happy to report we have received our first donation from a sponsor for our show. If you have a doctor, hairdresser, or any business that might like to be a sponsor, let me know and I ll you the forms for them. Our sponsors are very important to the show. The $15 covers your family for the year. For that bargain price, you will receive the monthly newsletter and learn about orchids at our monthly meetings. We hope that you will join us for another year. EAOS needs your Orchids Members of EAOS make it possible for us to participate in orchid shows. We would not be able to fill our display if our members didn t grow beautiful orchids and allow them to be shown. The second show of the season is at Venice on Feb. 4 & 5. Get your plants ready. Remove dead leaves and old flower spikes. Please remove wire hangers, decorations, fancy clips and anything that might detract from your orchids. Clean the leaves and register your plants on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Send the names of the plants you want to enter to orchids@eaos.org. List the full name of the orchid, the color and the approximate size of the flower (a picture would help). You can expect a return either saying that the plants have been registered or asking for further information. 3 Bring your registered plants to the Venice Community Center at 1:30 pm on Friday, Feb. 3. Pick up your plants on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 4 pm. Help Needed at the VAOS Show Mary Anne DiGrazia is looking for someone to help on Friday, February 3rd, at the Venice show. They will be handing out magazines to the people that come. They list all the VAOS sponsors and many orchid tips, etc. We will be inserting our EAOS show flyer in the front of the magazine to advertise our show. If you could give Mary Anne a hand, please or call. Thanks so much. tommaryanne@centurylink.net or Growing Tips: Vern Bloch s tip at the January Meeting was about using Bayer rose & flower insect killer. It contains Imidacloprid, a systemic insecticide which acts as an insect neurotoxin. According to online research, the EPA has tested it extensively and found it to be extremely safe to use compared to other chemicals we spray on our plants. It costs between $4 and $5 at and garden shop, including Lowes & Home Depot. they also have it in a quart size bottle of concentrate. When you mix it, you get the cost per bottle down to about 50 cents. Minutes 1/9 Meeting A meeting of the Englewood Area Orchid Society was held on January 9, 2017 at the Christ Lutheran Church. The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Mary Anne DiGrazia. We welcomed 2 visitors and three new members. Old Business: Jo Ann Royal and Helen McClaskie were thanked for their wonderful efforts to make our Christmas dinner meeting a success. The dinner was delicious and we had a raffle for orchids and our centerpieces of Poinsettias. Many people went home with beautiful plants. A special thank you to Ken Woodward and his team for the beautiful display of orchids at the Sarasota show held on January 7th and 8th. We won third place with our display of 49 orchids from 11 members and we received 25 ribbons. We also had four special awards that members won. Ken Woodward won Most Outstanding Small Cattleya, Corey Plasek won Most Outstanding Oncidinae, and Carol Nissen won Best Cymbidieae and Best other Genera. Congratulations to them for having such outstanding plants. Ken spoke about the Sarasota show and also the upcoming Venice show looking for our orchids for the display. He reminded us to make sure the plants are well groomed and that we remove any wires that will take away from the plant. The judges are looking for cleaned, staked plants when they are judging the plants. This product will not mar open flowers. If you get the all-purpose brand, which includes fertilizer, it will mar open flowers. It kills insects, doesn t hurt the plant, but it does make spots on the open flowers. 4 We were reminded that is time for dues, so if you haven t paid yet, please either mail a check to our Treasurer or bring to the next meeting. It is only $15 per household and is quite a bargain. Sign up sheets were available for people to start signing up for our April 7th and 8th show. If you haven t had an opportunity to sign up, be sure to check out the sheets at the next meeting. After a break, our speaker, Vern Bloch, was introduced and presented an interesting and informative program on spotted Cattleyas. After his program he offered a $2 discount on his plants, which was a great deal. Mary Anne DiGrazia did the plant table and after the terrific raffle we had, the meeting was adjourned. 5 In Memoriam Member s Choice It is with deep sadness we report the death of Lorraine Forshner, who was a long time member of both the Englewood and Venice Area Orchid Societies. She passed away on December 27th after a prolonged illness. She will be greatly missed and we all join in extending our sincere sympathies to her family and her daughter, Lucy, who usually came with her to the meetings.
