October 2018 Louisville, KY October Program: Member Repotting Demonstration and participation Wednesday, October 10, 2018 Immanuel United Church of Christ 2300 Taylorsville Road 6:15 pm, Social hour, 7:00 pm Meeting Onward ho - Show is done - lots of pretty orchids for sale - our display looked nice. Our members did a pretty good job with their plants and their receipt of awarded ribbons. We had 14 Blue, 11 Red, 8 White, and 1 Best of Class. Well done everyone! We won't be discussing the show at our meeting on October 10th. At our last meeting there was an embarrassing moment. This is a meeting to recruit new members and want to keep them returning. Not just coming for one time. We had several people sign up as members so we want to keep them happy about KOS and want them to keep returning. We will have a woman talking to our society about a new project in March. That will be at the beginning of our meeting. We will be discussing our up and coming plant auction on October 20th. That should be lots of fun. Also we'll discuss the Cincinnati Show and Gilda's Club, our Cookie Tea Reception. Our committee wanted to do it right, oldfashion tea cups, sugar cubes, nothing skimpy about it. Done in such good taste, the right way! So tell your friends about our picnic. If a friend or relative does come with you please tell them it is pot luck, $4 cost per person, and auction. If they know nothing about orchids tell them to get one at the auction and they can learn about the care of it. We'll have lots of orchids. I ed our vendors months ago about purchasing some at a "good price" and I got several at the show from them. Two of the vendors even donated some. I have

2 donations from Hausermann's and RF Orchids too. A nice gift certificate was received from a local nursery. As usual we have lots going on!!!!! Please join us on October 10 th, at 6:15. Ruth Schneider, President rblschnei@gmail.com From the Vice President After a long and vigorous growing season this summer, some of your plants, like mine, have grown well beyond the confines of their pots! And with the KOS Picnic and Plant Auction just around the corner, it s the perfect time to make some divisions to sell. So, October s program will be Part 2 of our repotting program. Repotting your orchid! Here s how the night will go: You bring in 1 or 2 plants. We will try to get all first plants covered before we go to your second plant. YOU WILL DO THE REPOTTING Experienced growers will be with you to coach you through the process and answer questions along the way. They will not repot your plant for you. Supplies you need to bring with you: A smaller & large pot The potting mix you use A cutting tool If you have any questions about the workshop before the meeting, feel free to me at pamlarocco@hotmail.com. Plant Doctor and Beginner s Corner will be held at 6:15. 3 Minutes The KOS monthly meeting held at the Immanuel United Church of Christ at 7:00 pm. There were 30 members present. Guests were Sheila Toner and Missy Camp. Welcome to our meeting. The Treasurer s financial report was not presented. President Ruth Schneider presented the August meeting minutes via the monthly newsletter. A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes by the members. Old Business Ruth Schneider announced that the articles regarding Viruses, Fungi & Diseases are now on our website for viewing. Catherine Luckett accepted the position of Show Chairman after Rick Willias resigned. A reminder about our Show dates, September28 for setup, and September for sales. Ruth Schneider announced that the After Show Party on September 29th has been cancelled due to Liability concerns and costs. Peg Revell gave us the MAOC website to use to register your plants for the upcoming show. Hard copy will be provided via before the show. Ruth Schneider received a written request from Gilda s Club to participate in an Orchid Info event with them in November and a spring 2019, How to Festival. Ruth Schneider and Liz Smith have visited them at their office to work out details for the November event. Ruth Schneider thanked Dick Humke for the get together for Wine & Cheese on Friday August 17th at his home. Rick Willias announced that 8 vendors will be at our Show. A complete Final list of display and vendors is not complete since we are still waiting for answers from some invitees. Pam Martin brought new flyer sheets to distribute and Sal Locascio distributed yard signs to members. David Easley announced food times for the show. Friday s supper provided by David, Saturday breakfast as well. Members are encouraged to bring pot luck for lunch on Saturday. New Business The Picnic and Plant auction will be held on October 20th at 3-7 pm at Jan Smith s house, 6007 Two Springs Lane. A charge of $4 per person will be collected for the meat entre. Pot luck dish is requested from the members. Also members are encouraged to bring a plant to auction off that day. Since the Cincinnati Show is the same weekend as our Picnic a request was made to let club know if we will have plants to enter into their show. 4 Ruth Schneider opened the floor for discussion of inclusion of the MAOC event in conjunction with our 2019 Show. The consensus was to not include them but let them know we would consider it in future show. Ruth Schneider wrote to the Louisville Home & Garden Show next spring to consider our eligibility to be in that show on March 1 3, Show and Tell plants were judged by Dick Humke.
