President s Message Dear Garden Club Members, As we prepare for our summer hiatus from meetings, we look forward to our final gathering on May 18, 11:30 AM at Brios in Plantation. We will celebrate a very successful year of fund raising projects, meetings, programs, brunches, raffles, finding new friends and much more. At our final meeting this season we will celebrate the installation of our new slate of officers who will serve for two year terms. This is a special occasion and we hope to see as many as possible at the luncheon. As for me, it has been my honor to serve once more as your President. It has been a source of great pride and joy to be a part of this wonder club and to have the support of a strong board and committee members to accomplish our mission. Thank you for being a part of the roles you have played and the friendship you brought to me and to this group. Let us all look forward to an exciting new year under the leadership of our new President elect, Peggy Tingle, and be there for the initiation of Peggy and her slate of officers at Brios. 2 Plantation Garden Club News PGC Woman of the Year Event Thanks to everyone who came out to support Woman of the Year Jeannette Smith at the Jacaranda Country club! (Photos by Sheryl Melson) Gardening Wisdom from Roxie Pelliccia / Since we had such a dry winter, we can only hope for an early rainy season. Keeping that in mind, let's try to get rid of all our weeds in our flower beds and our lawns. This month is the last chance to plant vegetables before it's too hot. Seeds would be peppers, squash, eggplant, okra, cucumbers. The only tomato that does well in summer is Everglades, our native tiny tomato, which is fun to grow because it produces so many fruits and they are very sweet. We have plenty in our store. Getting your fruit trees planted now will give you a longer growing season. Plant a large variety of flowers with a mixture of bright colors to attract our butterflies and bees which will help pollination of our fruit trees and vegetables, and enhance our love for the garden.

For those who would like to contribute, Cindy Bates will have a donation box available at the May luncheon to collect cans of Purina Friskies Classic Paté wet cat food for some feral cat colonies that she helps to feed. Your help is very greatly appreciated, thanks! Happy Birthday! Bruce Cianci 15 th Sarah Tingle 20 th TRIP TO THE REDLANDS ORCHID FESTIVAL! WE HAVE SPACE FOR 4 MORE PEOPLE! The Redlands Orchid Festival at Fruit & Spice Park in Homestead will be happening in May. On Sunday, May 21, Cindy Bates will have a 15-person van to take interested members to the orchid event. It will be about a 5 hour event 2 hours back and forth and about 3 hours for the event. Please note there will be a lot of walking. We went last year and it was a lot of fun. There will also be a quick side-trip to Schreiber s BBQ for lunch! Cost would be $15 a member - $10 fee for entry and $5 for gas. Please contact Cindy at cebates@att.net if you would like to go.
