1 Shelby Area District Library LIBRARY LINGO What s happening at your library... November 2017 VOLUNTEERS WANTED! CELEBRATION OF THE TREES & CHRISTMAS BAZAAR NOV. 30 DEC. 3 Join in the fun by decorating a tree or wreath for display during our silent auction, Celebration of the Trees Nov. 30 Dec. 3. We have local tree farms and markets donating beautiful live cut trees and fresh wreaths awaiting your artistic and creative touch to transform the Shelby Library for our Celebration of the Trees event. Participation forms (due back by Nov. 14) are available at the circulation desk. Participants, including community and school groups, individuals, or families should be prepared Wednesday, Nov. 29 between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm to decorate your entries at the Library. Were you the winning bidder on a cut tree last year? Please drop off the Christmas tree stand that was on loan to you so that we can reuse it this year. The Christmas Bazaar is seeking donations of new or gently used ornaments, ribbon, figurines, twinkle lights, artificial trees, hand-made Christmas items, and other holiday themed decorations to be sold Nov Dec. 3. Drop them off at the library from now until Nov. 27 during regular hours. Volunteers wanted!! We need help setting up the bazaar and assisting with sales in one or two hour shifts. We need musicians, cookie bakers, cashiers, phone callers, hosts, help with set up and take down Contact Cindy McKinnon, , or fill out a Celebration of the Trees participation form at the front desk. You will be contacted! Finally, we need you to come by and bid on the lovely displays, purchase holiday items from our Bazaar, enjoy the holiday music and refreshments on Sunday, Dec. 3 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Celebration of the Trees is a magical way to start your holiday activities while marveling at the talented community effort on display. Spread the word! 2 The Library will be closed on Thursday November 23 and Friday November 24 for Thanksgiving. We will be open 9am-1pm on Saturday November 25. Like us on Facebook! Shelby Area District Library Thank you to the Friends of the Library who recently donated $2,000 for books! We appreciate our Friends and encourage you to consider joining this amazing group! The Friends meet quarterly (January, April, July, and October). WHAT ARE WE READING? Guess what Shelby librarians are reading! Have fun maybe you ll find something new to read! The Book Tasting Book Club will meet on November 18 at 10:15am. Please call the library after October 28 for November book title. 2 Copies of the book discussed will be available at the circulation desk. This is Linda Ransom, Shelby Area District Library s Cataloger. She collects model horses and old horse books. 3 November Pinterest Club will meet on Thursday November 2 at 5:30pm to make a Thankful For print. Participants must supply their own 8x10 frame. Registration required. This event is for teens and adults. Pumpkin Decorating Party LIBRARY CALENDAR WED. NOV. 1 NO STORYTIME THURS. NOV. 2 PINTEREST CLUB 5:30PM WED. NOV. 8, 15, 22 STORYTIME 10:15AM These are just a few of the pumpkins that were decorated with feathers, buttons, glitter, paint, googly eyes, and more! 24 participants had a great time! Thank you to Rennhack Orchards Market for donating the pumpkins and Mary Ann Carey for judging. Participants received a certificate and cotton candy. THURS. NOV. 23 & FRI. 4 NOTES FROM FRIENDS November 2017 The Friends of S.A.D.L. celebrated National Friends of the Library week at our October meeting with donut holes and cider, compliments of Tiffany Haight and the library staff. Thank you!! You may have seen the special display featuring past Friends events and fundraisers, created by our talented library staff! Progress is also being made on a new brochure to promote the Friends of S.A.D.L. so watch for it soon. At the October 12 meeting, three appointees to the Board of Directors were announced and approved by the membership. This Board is new for the Friends and necessary for us to continue our nonprofit status with the State of Michigan. Thank you for agreeing to serve until our April election: Mary Ann Carey, Val Lau, and Diana Clark. A bylaws amendment is needed to add a Board of Directors. The following language will be voted on at our January 4 th meeting: ARTICLE VI OFFICERS Section 1. Number. The officers of the corporation shall be elected by the members. The officers shall be a president, a secretary, a treasurer, and three Directors at Large. Section 9. Directors at Large. The Directors (a) provide advice to the President on the good management of the Friends; (b) Chair committees of the Friends as required. The offices of president, secretary, treasurer, and three Board of Directors will be up for election at the April 2018 meeting. You may nominate yourself or someone else (with their permission). Meetings of Friends are held in January, April, July, and October. Let the President know by our Jan. 4 meeting if you are interested in running in April or leave a note with your name, phone number, and at the front desk indicating your interest in serving. The Friends are pleased to announce a $2000 donation to Shelby Library for book purchases. Got a favorite author or new book you would like to see in our library? You might want to talk to Tiffany or one of the other staff with your suggestion! Plans for Celebration of the Trees and our Christmas Bazaar are already underway! More information about the many ways you can help with this fundraiser can be found in this newsletter. Scheduled for Nov. 30 Dec. 3, we are getting ready to transform the Library with beautifully decorated trees, wreaths, and other holiday displays all available for silent auction bidding. Gently used and new ornaments and other holiday items will be sold at our Christmas Bazaar so be sure and mark your calendar to attend. Local musicians will entertain during special Library hours Sunday, Dec. 3 from 11:00 am 3:00 pm, when the silent auction bids will be read. Bring your friends, family, and neighbors to celebrate with us during this very special holiday tradition. The Friends of S.A.D.L. fundraise for the Library. We couldn t do this without the help of many volunteers. November seems an appropriate time to give thanks, not just to our wonderful library staff, but to all of our community of Friends who have stepped up to chair an event, work behind the scenes, donate funds, give of your time and talent to help our library. Thank you!! As a Friend of S.A.D.L. you are needed more than ever! We are looking for new faces to join us, volunteers to chair and assist with our fundraisers, suggestions for other creative ideas to raise money. Becoming involved with any of the Friends projects is a great way to meet others who share your love of our wonderful library. Don t want to attend a meeting but want to help out? 5 Dolly Parton Imagination Library NOW AVAILABLE IN OCEANA COUNTY! The single most significant factor influencing a child s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school. Dolly Parton s Imagination Library makes reading exciting and fun for your children! Each month a new, carefully selected book will be mailed in your child s name directly to your home, with no cost or obligation to your family. It is a FREE GIFT, made possible by generous donations to United Way of the Lakeshore. Who is eligible? Children ages birth through five who are residents of Oceana County. (Note: children signing up should not be turning five within 3 months of application.) What are my responsibilities? Be a legal resident of Oceana County. Submit the official registration form or register online ( Stop by an Oceana County library for a registration form. Notify United Way if your address changes. (Books are mailed to the address listed on the official registration form on file, so you must update your address in order to continue receiving books.) Read with your child - young children whose parents read aloud to them have better language and literacy skills when they go to school. When will I receive books? Eight to ten weeks after your form has been received, books will begin arriving at your home, continuing until your child turns five or you move out of Oceana County. 5
