2 How does feeding an organic certified herd differ from a conventional herd? The key factors to remember for Organic herds are: Year-round pasture (outdoor) access. All ruminants must derive 30%DMI or greater from pasture during the grazing season. o Grazing season must be a minimum of 120 days a year (depending on geographical area), does not need to be continuous. Bedding must be organic certified as well (nonsynthetic, roughage organic hay/straw/corn stalks, wood products no prohibited substances). Maintain all records. Always have producer check with certifier before making changes if organic status is unclear or unknown; it is the producers responsibility to get ingredients approved, but always double check with your producer before purchasing. So, what can you feed? Any feed with an OMRI certificate such as Levucell SC OU from Lallemand should be accepted by your producers local organic certifying agency. Remember that each organic certifying agency interprets the organic guidelines their own way so one certifier might approve a product and another might not although this rarely happens. Always get a tag approved through the certifier before feeding it on farm (or purchasing). When requesting special mixes for organic farms make sure to tell formulation that it is an organic mix to ensure that only organic approved ingredients are used (we do not carry organic commodities except the organic calf starter).
