Collateral ligament located on the outside of the knee joint (lat eral) 2 of 8
3 2. Label the components of the knee. 20 pts 3 of 8
4 3. Analyze the following images. (a) Name the muscles of the quadriceps that the letters A, B, C, and D are pointing to. What is the main function of this muscle group? 10 pts The function of this muscle group is the extension of the knee. (b) What are the images in A and B showing? What are the causes and treatment of the condition in B? 6 pts A is showing a healthy knee joint and B is showing a knee joint with osteoarthritis. A B The causes of OA are: Misalignment of bones Mechanical injury Excessive body weight Loss of strength in muscles supporting joint Treatment of OA can include physical therapy, NSAIDs, and Total Knee replacement surgery. 4 of 8
5 (c) Name the type of tear to the meniscus depicted by A, B, and C? What is the function of the meniscus? 8 pts A B C A is a radial tear B is degradation C is a bucket handle tear The menisci protect the ends of the bones and helps distribute the stress between the tibial and femoral condyles. 5 of 8

What are possible causes and what is a treatment option? 6 pts This xray depicts an intertrochanteric fracture. The cause of this is typical a fall on the hip with osteoporosis also affecting the bone quality. The treatment for this is usually a compression hip screw, an intrameduallary nail, or total hip arthroplasty 7 of 8
8 (c) What injury is depicted in this X-ray? What are possible causes and what are treatment options? 6 pts The injury depicted in the xray is a hip dislocation. The is typically a bad fall or an impact like in a car accident. The treatment is usually closed reduction where the hip is rotated such that the femoral head pops back into the acetabulum. An open reduction can be done, which is involves surgery to put the femoral head back in place and repair possible soft tissue damage. Complications with a hip dislocation are possible labrum tears and damage to the ligamentum teres which can lead to osteonecrosis. 8 of 8
