2 Hellenic Society for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology The Hellenic Society for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology organizes a EUROSON SCHOOL entitled Ultrasound Elastography. Aim of the Conference is to summarize today s Ultrasound Elastography and Therapeutic Ultrasound data, how they are applied in the new ultrasound applications in all organs of the body and how they are used from doctors of all specialties. Main subjects of the EUROSON SCHOOL are US Elastography and Therapeutic US. There are many forms of Elastography which emerge from different manufacturers and content technologically different applications. These applications are described in the EUROSON SCHOOL and its practical Courses. New Elastography technology adds specific valuable information in the study of all organs potentially resulting to a virtual biopsy. Elastography, along with the Ultrasound Contrast Agents, opens the road for the arrival of Therapeutic Ultrasound: other equipment, using other frequencies allow the targeted, minimally invasive therapeutic intervention, especially in oncological patients, on both the superficial and the profound organs. Interventional diagnostic and therapeutic actions are the new chapter of Ultrasound. Ultrasound guided biopsies, assisted by Elastography, reach pathological tissue minimizing the traumatic act and restraining the biopsies number, especially in the thyroid and the prostate. The role of the HSUMB, member of the EFSUMB, is to inform and educate on new technologies and applications of US. Recent elastographic solutions add diagnostic information about undiscovered until now dimension of tissues. The EUROSON SCHOOL presents, judges and illuminates this recent technological path of US. We try to analyze those new clinical applications and guide the path of Elastography towards Therapeutic Ultrasound. Pavlos S. 5 EUROSON SCHOOL The EUROSON School comprises a series of ultrasound teaching Courses organised by members of the National Societies (which constitute EFSUMB), or by specialized European or International societies/organisations whose aim it is to promote the application of ultrasound in medicine and/or biology. There are clear regulations governing the organisation of these Courses which are fixed in a by-law which was published in Newsletters of the European Journal of Ultrasound (EJU). The initial and very successful Course was organised by our Italian colleagues, especially by Luigi Bolondi, at Merano in 1992 in the field of gastroenterology. However the more recent EUROSON SCHOOLS were mainly devoted on the use of US contrast agents in different clinical applications. As a result of this educational activity an International Symposium was organised in Barcelona in 2006 by the EFSUMB which concluded at the designation of specific guidelines on the use of USCA. Those guidelines have been extremely useful and internationally accepted. Altogether we look back to a number of very successful and interesting Courses, organised by various active Societies, covering a range of topics with an always experienced and engaged faculty. 3
