LEADERSHIP THROUGH EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL COMPETENCE Scott N. Taylor, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Organizational Studies Anderson School of Management University of New Mexico
Fundamental Question What distinguishes a truly outstanding leader from someone who simply occupies a leadership role?
Exercise 1. Take out a sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle. 2. On the left side of the page write, Great Leader/Manager 3. Think of someone who you consider to be a great boss or leader, then list words or phrases that describe that person (his/her impact on you and others) 4. Now on the right side of the page write, Lousy Leader/Manager 5. Think of someone who you consider to be a lousy boss or leader, then list words or phrases that describe that person
Great Leader/Deficient Leader Characteristics of Great Leader Characteristics of Deficient Leader
On the other hand Researchers have been studying organizational climate for more than 50 years and routinely find that that 60% to 75% of the employees in any organization no matter when or where the survey was completed and no matter what occupation was involved report that the worst or most stressful aspect of their job is their immediate supervisor. These studies also show that abusive and incompetent management creates billions of dollars of lost productivity each year. Study after study demonstrates that bad leaders destroy the health, happiness, loyalty, and productivity of their subordinates. (Pfeffer & Sutton, Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths And Total Nonsense: Profiting From Evidence-Based Management, 2006, p. 191)
Resonant Leadership: Two Dimensions Engagement of Others (Positive Emotional Tone) Connection with the Needs of Others (Synchrony)
Resonant Leadership: Two Dimensions Engagement of Others (Overall Positive Emotional Tone) Methods used include: Vision Hope Inspiration Risk taking / courageous behavior Self as example Connection with the Needs of Others (Synchrony) Methods used include: Establishing trust Openness Demonstrating empathy
Great Leaders Great leaders move us. They ignite our passion and inspire the best in us. When we try to explain why they are so effective, we speak of strategy, vision, or powerful ideas. But the reality is much more primal: Great leadership works through the emotions. (Opening Paragraph of Primal Leadership (Goleman, & Boyatzis, McKee, 2002)
Resonant Leadership Emotionally Intelligent leaders create resonance naturally.
EI Model: How EI Drives Performance Self Others Awareness Self Awareness Social Awareness Actions Self Management Relationship Management Positive impact on others
Two Components of Self-awareness 1. Understanding self-resources (e.g., aware of strengths and limits) character traits assessment of strengths and weaknesses sense of purpose or calling core values and beliefs motivations and desires 2. Anticipating accurately how others perceive you (e.g., understanding the implications of your emotions and behaviors) Emotions, thoughts, and preferences of others; how others experience you Taylor, S.N. (2010). Redefining leader self-awareness by integrating the second component of self-awareness. Journal of Leadership Studies, 3(4), Taylor, S.N., & Bright, D.S. (2011). Exploring conditions for openness in multisource feedback assessment. Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, 47(4),
How Important is Self-awareness? Charles Francis Adams, the grandson of the second president of the United States, was a successful lawyer, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and the U.S. ambassador to Britain. Amidst his responsibilities, he had little time to spare. He did, however, keep a diary. One day he wrote, Went fishing with my son today a day wasted! On that same date, Charles s son, Brooks Adams, had printed in his own diary, Went fishing with my father today the most wonderful day of my life Pinnegar, R.D. (1994, October). The simple things. Ensign, p. 82.
Action Item Take-away #1 Prediction Validation Exercise 1. Create a list of your key strengths, be as specific and descriptive as possible. 2. Select 8-10 others you will ask one of the following questions: a. When you have seen me make a special contribution, what distinctive strengths did I display? b. When you have seen me at my best, what unique value did I create? 3. Before asking others to respond to the above questions, anticipate, as accurately as possible, what you think they will say. 4. Collect feedback from others on the above question (see #2 above) 5. Compare what you thought your key strengths were (see #1 above) with what others said and what you thought others would say. Adapted from: Cameron, K. Positive Leadership, 2008.
How Do We Help Ourselves and Others Develop Emotional and Social Competence? Consider: Who has helped you become the person you are today? Without this person, you would not be who you are today?
How Do We Sustainably Change/Develop? Ideal self and strengths 80% of the moments with people who helped us the most to become who we are involved someone helping us to extend our dreams, reach for new aspirations, or consider what it means to be a good person and to be successful. (McKee, Boyatzis, & Johnston Becoming a Resonant Leader, Harvard Business School Press, p. 216). Overall positive emotional tone The Magic Ratio
Our Ideal Self Our noble purpose in life, our dreams and images of a desired future, our passion, our calling It is supported by our belief that we can actually have an impact on our lives and the world around us. McKee, Boyatzis, & Johnston Becoming a Resonant Leader, Harvard Business School Press., p. 72.
Your Ideal Self What do you want out of life? Location of work in it? What do you want out of your work? Are you the person you want to be?
Action Item Take-away#2 Write a short paragraph about your vision/ideal self: Who are going to be and how do you want to act, regardless of what happens?
Key Principles of Human Development People are not rocks. People thrive and develop best in caring environments where they experience positivity, connections, and belonging. People are holistic beings.
