Info Nuggets Sepsis Sepsis Alliance launched a brand new healthcare toolkit this year to make hospital participation in Sepsis Awareness Month even easier. From printable posters to social media content, a nursing education tool, patient toolkit and more, find resources and materials to spread the word about sepsis in September. New webinar series, Sepsis: Continuum of Care Sepsis Alliance is creating a total of four webinars throughout the rest of the year targeting healthcare professionals. The first is coming up on Sept. 7 th at 2pm ET (Register here). 8
9 Info Nuggets Sepsis Don t forget to think prevention as well as early recognition and appropriate treatment. Many different kinds of infection can lead to sepsis. *Pneumonia- vaccination and VAP bundle Influenza- vaccination and isolation precautions *Most common infection leading to sepsis. CDC- Epidemiology of Sepsis: Prevalence and Prevention
10 Info Nuggets Get devices OUT! CLABSI and CAUTI- continued focus on bundle compliance (Insertion AND MAINTENANCE bundles) UTI (non-catheter associated)- education of patients (particularly the elderly) whenever encountered on how to avoid UTIs MDRO prevention- effective use of isolation precautions, environmental disinfection and antibiotic stewardship HAND HYGIENE for all disease entities!
11 Info Nuggets Survival is no longer the gold standard for sepsis success! There is significant morbidity associated with sepsis even when our patients are discharged alive- THIS IS A VERY LOW BAR!! Early recognition and timely, appropriate treatment can also eliminate or reduce long term effects. The slides from a webinar entitled Life after Sepsis: Post Sepsis Syndrome are available for your review.
Sepsis Every 2 minutes someone dies from sepsis in the US-that s more than from prostate cancer, breast cancer, and AIDS combined 12
13 Info Nuggets CAUTI Host an Event Sepsis Fundraising for Sepsis Alliance or other sepsis prevention organization Spike out Sepsis, Stomp out Sepsis, Sepsis Heroes, Sepsis Challenge 5K, etc. What will your organization do for September Sepsis Month?
Sepsis How to Engage Patients and Families to Prevent Sepsis and Reduce Readmissions Tuesday, September 12, 2:00-3:00 pm ET Take this opportunity to register for the September PFE Learning Event, How to Engage Patients and Families to Prevent Sepsis and Reduce Readmissions, on September 12 at 2:00 p.m. ET. Sepsis accounts for more hospital readmissions than heart failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or heart attack, and also has higher readmission-related costs compared to these diagnoses, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. This one-hour event will highlight opportunities for HIINs and hospitals to engage patients and families at all three levels of the hospital setting to prevent sepsis and decrease hospital readmissions.
