1 Alumni Day 2013: Three Rivers Otolaryngology Update Dates: March 8-9, 2013 Sponsored by Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences, and Location: Heberman Conference Center At UPMC Shadyside 5150 Centre Avenue, COURSE DIRECTORS Bridget C. Hathaway, MD, Jeffrey P. Simons, MD, and Ryan J. Soose, MD Intent and Overview The field of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery continues to evolve with new technologies, treatment options and advanced scientific knowledge. The meeting will discuss an array of topics in the field of Otolaryngology, specifically, salivary gland disorders, geriatric otolaryngology, laryngology, allergy, and trauma. In addition to discussing cutting edge topics within these areas of Otolaryngology, this meeting will focus on practical applications of everyday otolaryngologic care from the above-mentioned sub-specialties within Otolaryngology.
2 Objectives At the completion of the course, the participant should be able to: Physicians will know the indications for sialoendoscopy in the management of benign salivary gland disorders. They will know current approaches in the treatment of facial trauma. Physicians will be able to employ an evidence based approach in implementing sublingual (SLIT) and subcutaneous (SCIT) immunotherapy in their practices. They will effectively utilize allergy treatment in the setting of chronic rhinosinusitis. Physicians should recognize unique considerations that are relevant to geriatric population in treating symptoms and disorders involving the ears, nose, and throat. In particular, attention will be given to the evaluation and treatment of balance disorders, dysphagia, sleep disorders, and presbycusis in older patients. Sialoendoscopy is a relative new technique for the treatment of salivary gland disorders. The vast majority of practicing physicians have not been trained in this technique and will benefit from an overview of its applications. Many otolaryngologists incorporate allergy into their general practices. It is important to understand the potential efficacy and risks of both SCIT and SLIT. With changing demographics in the United States population, otolaryngologists will be treating older adults with increasing frequency and should understand unique considerations relevant to this age group. Who Should Attend Otolaryngologists, primary care physicians, pediatricians, family practitioners, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents, audiologists, speech therapists and other interested health care professionals. CME Accreditation and Designation Statement: The is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Other health care professionals are awarded 1.0 continuing education units (CEU s) which are equal to contact hours. 2
