2 Dear Colleagues UW-Madison s Programs on Aging is committed to providing health and human service professionals with leading-edge information on geriatric mental health. At our programs, you learn best-practices from an outstanding faculty of geriatric psychiatrists, professors, and clinicians with recognized expertise in treating late-life mental disorders. You can choose from different seminars in geriatric mental health every fall and spring. Each 1-day seminar provides 0.5 continuing education units. You may attend any individual workshop or participate in one of the geriatric mental health certificate programs. If you choose to pursue the Mental Health and the Older Adult certificate series, you will need to attend 8 seminars in addition to the biannual Summer Institute on Mental Disorders and the Older Adult. To obtain the certificate, participants must take 3 elective seminars and 5 required seminars including: Late-Life Depression Late-Life Anxiety Late-Life Sleep Disorders Managing Psychotropic Medications The Impact of Common Geriatric Conditions on Mental Health Please note that the Geriatric Mental Health Care Management: An Introduction seminar and the 2-day Behavioral Activation Training for Geriatric Depression are not part of the Mental Health and the Older Adult certificate program. A new certificate series on geriatric mental health, the Geriatric Mental Health Care Management Certificate is also offered through the Division of Continuing Studies. The Wisconsin Star Method (WSM) is an effective assessment tool that provides an in-depth view of the biological and psychosocial dynamics operating in late-life mental disorders. In this seminar learn about the WSM from Dr. Tim Howell, who teaches geriatric teams how to apply the method. You learn to: understand the theoretical basis of the WSM understand the format and process of the WSM apply the WSM to complex cases recognize and value the treatability of mental illness among older adults.
