SESSION 1 INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural framework lays the foundation for Deadly Choices that is essential for building relationships with participants. The Deadly Choices Tobacco Education Program gives participants an understanding of the long association with tobacco Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have had, which helps them to gain insights into the current use and acceptance of tobacco in community. OBJECTIVES To understand the traditional use of the native tobacco plant pituri. To understand the impacts of colonisation on tobacco use. To understand how participants may be influenced by their family s use of tobacco. CONTENT History of tobacco Local and international trade of tobacco Colonisation, payment and employment of tobacco and other products Wartime Research about health impacts of smoking Current relationship with tobacco COM Challenge our Mob, Change our Message
SESSION 2 IMPACTS OF SMOKING Internationally and in Australia, tobacco smoke is the leading cause of early death and disease, and smoking rates in some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are some of the highest in the world. This session looks at the negative impact smoking can have in participants lives whether they smoke or not. Smoking harms a person s physical health (disease and mortality), emotional wellbeing (quality of life), financial choices, and may limit social networks. Understanding the impact of tobacco smoke on every part of our lives gives participants an opportunity to build skills to prevent its uptake and be deadly leaders in community. OBJECTIVES To understand the direct impact of tobacco smoking (physical, emotional, financial and social) and the benefits of not smoking. To build skills to prevent the uptake of smoking. To identify strategies that will promote leadership in creating Deadly Places, Smoke-Free Spaces. CONTENT Social aspects of smoking Emotional impacts Physical impacts Monetary impacts Benefits of not smoking COM Challenge our Mob, Change our Message
SESSION 3 CHEMICALS AND ADDICTION Tobacco smoke contains as many as 4,000 poisonous chemicals, each having a specific purpose to enhance the smoking experience. Despite the health risks, there are alarming rates of smoking amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To reduce the impact of chronic disease, we must first acknowledge that the main influential factor is the addiction caused by nicotine. Understanding the strength and control of addiction is the key to providing empathy, support and strategies to individuals and community members to reduce and prevent smoking rates in community. OBJECTIVES To understand the chemicals involved and their link to smoking-related disease. To understand nicotine and the role it plays in the continued smoking behaviour. To understand and acknowledge the power of addiction. CONTENT What chemicals are found in tobacco smoke What is an addiction Empathy and understanding COM Challenge our Mob, Change our Message
SESSION 4 QUIT SUPPORTS AND RESOURCES Quitting smoking is challenging for everybody and it is important to promote the various tools available. This session discusses the stages of behaviour change, from someone who is not thinking about quitting, to those who have quit and need ongoing support to prevent relapsing. Throughout this session, facilitators provide knowledge, tools, and strategies that may assist those who smoke to quit smoking, with the support of the people around them and professional services. OBJECTIVES To understand the variety and appropriate use of quit supports and tools. To promote a non-smoker s role in the quit journey. To raise awareness of how to access quit supports and tools. CONTENT Stages of a quit journey COM Challenge our Mob, Change our Message
SESSION 5 PASSIVE SMOKING Smokers not only put themselves at risk of serious health problems, but also nonsmokers who are breathing in smoke from other people s cigarettes, pipes, and cigars commonly known as passive smoke (or second-hand smoke). This session looks at the impact passive smoking can have on individuals, as well as legislation that aims to reduce tobacco smoke exposure and create public smokefree spaces. OBJECTIVES To increase the awareness of the impact of passive smoke (second-hand smoke). To discuss how people can create Deadly Places, Smoke-Free Spaces. CONTENT What is passive smoking Effects of passive smoking Individual and government strategies COM Challenge our Mob, Change our Message
SESSION 6 DEADLY PLACES, SMOKE-FREE SPACES TM After taking part in this program, participants have a greater understanding of, and increased knowledge and skills about, tobacco and the importance of creating Deadly Places, Smoke-Free Spaces. With these skills, they are now leaders and teachers in their communities and we encourage them to take their learnings and share them with their family, friends, and community. This session is the opportunity to finalise and present the meaningful message that represents Deadly Places, Smoke-Free Spaces. OBJECTIVES To present the promotional message for Deadly Places, Smoke-Free Spaces. CONTENT Recap of previous weeks sessions Signing the Deadly Places, Smoke-Free Spaces pledge Presenting Challenge our Mob, Change our Message
DEADLY CHOICES LINKS TO THE AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM HIGH SCHOOL (YEARS 7-10) Deadly Choices have analysed the national curriculum and, although the Deadly Choices program does not involve examinations (with exemption to the pre/post surveys), the program content matches up to certain content descriptors within the national Health and Physical Education curriculum. Deadly Choices hopes that the students who take part in this program can take the knowledge gained and apply this to both their school- and real- life. The following content descriptors, as outlined below, match up to the Deadly Choices program. As the Deadly Choices program is provided for the Indigenous community, the preventative health team sees the importance in linking Indigenous history and culture into its teachings. HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION Deadly Choices encourages students to make positive choices to promote health and physical activity. It is for this reason that we have looked very closely at the Health and Physical Education curriculum when developing the program, to see exactly how it can align with what students should be learning. We see the benefits of living a healthy and active lifestyle and believe that we can teach young Indigenous students of that importance throughout the program.
THROUGHOUT THE DEADLY CHOICES TOBACCO EDUCATION PROGRAM, STUDENTS WILL: SUB-STRAND 1: BEING HEALTHY, SAFE AND ACTIVE Evaluate strategies to manage personal, physical and social changes that occur as they grow older (ACPPS071) Students discuss stages of life throughout the program and are supported by facilitators to develop and understand the process of making positive choices in scenarios around smoking that will face in their lives. Practice and apply strategies to seek help for themselves or others (ACPPS072) Within the chemicals and addiction and quit supports and resources sessions, students will discuss and demonstrate different ways in which they can create conversations to ask for and provide help. Investigate and select strategies to promote health, safety and wellbeing (ACPPS073) Facilitators encourage and support students to develop their research skills and understanding of health physical, social and emotional in the community; Students explore strategies of coping and promotion through scenarios, simulations and media to understand further their ability to create change and wellbeing in their families, school and communities.
SUB-STRAND 2: COMMUNICATING AND INTERACTING FOR HEALTH AND WELLBEING Investigate the benefits of relationships and examine their impact on their own and others health and wellbeing (ACPPS074) During the six week program students build their knowledge and health literacy to understand their role in their personal and their families health outcomes, through support groups, positive mentors and program content; Students are encouraged to have a health check during the program and in turn encourage their family and friends to do the same; Every session students are supported to lead their lives positively and support others to do the same. Evaluate situations and propose appropriate emotional responses and then reflect on possible outcomes of different responses (ACPPS094) Students and facilitators discuss appropriate responses to difficult situations that may arise in life, for example, peer pressure to smoke; Facilitators also support and encourage students to explore and rectify consequences of smoking behaviour and chosen responses to confronting stimuli. SUB-STRAND 3: CONTRIBUTING TO HEALTHY AND ACTIVE COMMUNITIES Plan and use health practices, behaviours and resources to enhance the health, safety and wellbeing of their communities (ACPPS077) Students and their families are encouraged to utilise local health services to get full health checks, increasing awareness of health problems and supports and health literacy; External supports are incorporated in to the program to give students greater understanding of their influence on the health outcomes of the community and the leading roles the students can have in supporting their families and communities to make healthier, happier life choices. Investigate how empathy and ethical decision making contribute to respectful relationships (ACPPS093) Specific sessions in the program chemicals and addiction, passive smoking, quit supports and resources expand the student s understanding of empathy and respect, to improve the relationships around them now and in to the future.
