1 ;menúbrains hacemos una pausa y continuamos el día JANUARY 6 Consume or be consumed? DOWNLOADS PDF DONE! During specific times of the year, we change the way we psychologically perceive our context and a lightbulb goes on in our head that encourages us to consume, to shop. Consumerism, as a concept, often has negative connotations when, in reality, it doesn't have to be that way. Shopping can be a positive experience which satisfies our physical and psychological needs. Shopping can distract us. The problem is when shopping becomes an end in itself, lacking a specific objective, when it seems to attract us like a magnet and we fail to evaluate our needs. When we avoid thinking and are swept along by our emotion. In order for shopping to be consistent with our interests and needs we should bear in mind a set of principles: When am I going to shop?, Why am I doing it?, How does it help me?, Does the price fit with my budget? Have I been influenced by advertising or by personal interests? It s crucial that we avoid, as much as possible, the influences of advertising and the bandwagon effect. Knowing how to shop and being aware of what products we consume will help us prevent the negative consequences that come from following our heart instead of our head. Something else to bear in mind is that we, as adults, are role-models for our children, who learn from what we say and do. We must teach them to analyse themselves and others. We must stress the importance of need when shopping, to consume responsibly, while also highlighting the benefits and gratification it can give us.
