1 Session 19 Using the Internet for Nutrition and Menu Planning Objectives Materials Needed Learners will: Be able to use the internet for personal nutrition information. Understand making healthy food choices in their diet. Be able to determine the right amount of calories needed daily. Computers Laminated pictures of Carla and Max 3-day diet diaries filled in by students (homework from Session 11) Worksheet 19a (Carla s and Max s Diets) Activity 1 How Many Calories Do You Need Every Day? 1. Tell the learners we will be learning how to calculate how many calories we need every day. 2. Demonstrate opening this website: index.aspx. (NOTE: If your learners are not familiar with the internet, you can preload the site onto their desktops.) 3. Show the picture of Carla. Elicit from the class information about Carla: How old is she? (ex.: 35.) Show the class how to enter the data for age. Continue to do the same for sex, height, weight and physical activity (NOTE: For Carla, choose a height and weight in the healthy range.) Then click Submit. 4. On the Pyramid page, ask the class to find the amount of calories Carla should eat everyday. 5. Ask other questions about the page (ex.: How much fruit does she need?). 6. Print out Carla s recommended diet. 7. Repeat this process with the second picture, of Max. Ask for a volunteer to come to the computer to enter the data for Max as the class gives it. (NOTE: Max is overweight. Choose the option to select a diet for a man of his height in the healthy range.) Print out Max s diet. 8. Ask learners to go to a computer and enter data for themselves. Assist as needed. Print out their recommended diets. 19 USING THE INTERNET FOR NUTRITION & MENU PLANNING 1

2 Activity 2 Carla s Diet (NOTE: Students do not enter Carla s or Max s information individually. This is done as a whole class, to teach or model the process.) 1. Hand out copies of Carla s diet: Breakfast: 1 bagel with 1 tablespoon butter, ½ cup orange juice, coffee Lunch: hamburger (double on a bun, 1 cup French fries, diet soda Snack: apple Dinner: 6 oz. fried fish, 1 cup white rice, 1 cup broccoli with 1 teaspoon butter, 1 cup chocolate ice cream 2. Tell the learners they are going to learn how to plan a diet based on their caloric needs. 3. Hand out Carla s and Max s diets. Then go to the website: Demonstrate (eliciting as much as you can from the learners) filling in the information for Carla, and then entering her diet information. (NOTE: You may wish to write the following instructions on the board.) a. Enter the name of the food. b. Click on Search. c. Choose the food from the list. d. Click on it. e. Choose the amount. f. Click on Meal Time. g. Click on Add-Ons (not every time). h. Click on Add. (Be careful to enter the amount of food and choose the meal.) i. Point out the chart on the right hand side that indicates how she is meeting her nutritional goals (see illustration above). 19 USING THE INTERNET FOR NUTRITION & MENU PLANNING 2

3 4. Ask if Carla s diet matched her nutritional needs (it didn t) Below is the printout of her diet. 5. As a class, try to revise Carla s diet to match her nutritional needs. Enter the information, eliciting from the group. 6. Ask for volunteers to enter Max s diet. Print the result. (NOTE: If your class is fairly computer literate, this may be done as a partner activity.) 7. With their partner, ask learners to revise Max s diet to meet his nutritional needs. Print the result. 8. Ask learners to enter information about themselves from their 3-day diet diary (homework from Session 11), and print the result. 9.
