1 The APA Women s Programs Office is about women! Psychology in the Public Interest The Women's Programs Office (WPO) employs psychology in the Public Interest to improve the health, education, wellbeing, and status of women psychologists and consumers of psychological services. WPO activities span the science, practice, education, and policy areas. The office works to: coordinate APA's efforts to ensure equal opportunities for women psychologists as practitioners, educators, and scientists; analyze initiatives and trends affecting women within APA and within psychology; eliminate gender bias in research, diagnosis and treatment, and education and training; promote the inclusion of women in research studies and encourage the analysis of sex and gender in the conduct and reporting of the results of research; improve women s access to health and mental health services and promote the inclusion of psychosocial and behavioral factors in women's health research and practice;
2 monitor the welfare of women as consumers of psychological services, analyze the impact of governmental initiatives on women, and promote the development and application of psychological knowledge. Safety and Security APA Task Force on Trafficking of Women and Girls In October 2010, the Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest (BAPPI) approved the Committee on Women in Psychology s (CWP) request to establish an APA Task Force on Trafficking of Women and Girls to review the state of the literature of theory, research, and practice relevant to the trafficking of women and girls. The Task Force met for the first time in December Task Force members include Nancy M. Sidun, PsyD, ABPP, ATR (Chair); Mary C. Burke, PhD; Michelle Contreras, PhD; Melissa Farley, PhD; Deborah L. Hume, PhD; James O. Finkenhauer, PhD; Terri D. Patterson, PhD; Alexandra S. Pierce, PhD; Marsha B. Liss, PhD, JD; and AnnJanette Alejano-Steele, PhD. In January 2012, Dr. Rita Chi-Ying Chung resigned from the task force. The WPO submitted multiple funding proposals (including APA Council of Representatives Women's Caucus, Samuel Rubin Foundation) to support a 2012 meeting of the Task Force on Trafficking of Women and Girls.
3 With the APA Graduate and Postgraduate Education and Training Office and Neighborhood Opportunities for Volunteer Activities (NOVA) Committee, the WPO hosted a brown bag lunch for APA staff in recognition of January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month featuring Tina Frundt, Founder and Executive Director of Courtney s House, which provides a safe environment for girls and boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who are survivors of sex trafficking. This effort was followed up with a drive for items needed by Courtney s House from March 26 April 8, To learn more about Courtney s House, please visit Interpersonal Violence Developed a consumer fact sheet highlighting the mental health consequences of intimate partner violence, including information on prevalence, screening, and local and national resources. Related Briefings Attended by WPO Staff In February 2012, attended Institute of Medicine meeting on Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States, ( iom.edu/activities/children/ SexualExploitationSexTrafficking/2012-FEB-29.aspx). In May 2012, attended Center for American Progress Women s Leadership Series special conversation with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on DHS Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking. 4 In July 2012, attended American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Human Rights Coalition meeting. Youth Empowerment Sexualization of Girls WPO continued to disseminate the Report of the APA Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls, the awardwinning What Girls Can Do tip card, and the Parents Tip Sheet. In April 2012, Stowarzyszenie Twoja Sprawa, an association in Poland whose main goal is to fight against content that promotes objectivation requested permission to translate into Polish and to reproduce the Report of the APA Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls. In January and February 2012, consulted with the Center for Strategic Analysis, which is supervised by the French Prime Minister, on a report devoted to the sexualization of children. The policy brief, Note d'analyse Hypersexualisation de l'espace public : comment protéger les enfants? was published in March Disseminated "What Girls Can Do" tip card to AXIOS- Mision Mujer A.C., an organization that works with adolescents in Mexico to prevent psychosocial problems. Career Development APA Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology (LIWP) On March 29, 2012, hosted APA LIWP 4th annual Spring Follow-on Program with thirty-eight members of the class returning. The agenda included
5 managing fiscal resources, navigating personnel challenges, and individual coaching sessions. In January 2012, WPO issued the Call for Applications for the 5th Annual APA LIWP. In May, the APA LIWP Executive Committee selected 51 mid-career women psychologists from all over the United States. The 5th Annual APA LIWP will commence from July 30- August 1, 2012 in Orlando, FL just prior to APA s convention. Dr. Antonette Zeiss, Chief Consultant for the Office of Mental Health Services, will deliver this year s invited address. Dr. Zeiss, who was already the highest ranking psychologist in the VA, and is now the first psychologist, and first woman, to hold the role of Chief Consultant. Webinars offered in 2012: Women in Leadership: How to Run for APA President by Carol D. Goodheart, EdD, APA Past President, and Dorothy W. Cantor, PsyD, APF President and APA Past President, and An Overview to Fundraising in Healthcare and the Sciences by Dina Plapler, Vice President for Development, UConn Health Center, and Vice President, UConn Foundation at University of Connecticut. APF's Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology Fund has been renamed the Dorothy W. Cantor APF Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology Fund, thanks to a $100,000 donation by Dorothy W. Cantor, PsyD. The Cantor APF LIWP Fund now stands at $176,000 in cash and pledges.
6 Status of Women of Color in Academia WPO took the lead on preparing a written statement on APA s behalf to the National Academies of Sciences conference Seeking Solutions: Maximizing American Talent by Advancing Women of Color in Academia. To review the testimony, please visit APA Governance Survey Continued discussion with the APA Center for Workforce Studies (CWS) regarding the future of the APA Governance Survey, which collects data on the level of representation of diverse groups serving on and running for office in APA governance. Distribution of the 2012 APA Governance Survey is expected to begin in August With CWP, submitted a proposal for a time-limited Visiting Scholar to collaborate with CWS to gather and analyze data to update the Report of Task Force on the Changing Gender Composition of Psychology (1995). Women in the APA Tables for Women in the APA, including a timeline of women APA presidents, the representation of women on the Board of Directors and Council, and those serving in APA Division executive committees, as well as the numbers of women participating as members and serving in leadership roles in APA, will be available in Fall 2012 on the WPO website. Related Briefings Attended by WPO Staff On May 3, 2012, participated in Women s Leadership as an Academic Discipline, a working conference hosted by Barnard College, Rutgers University
7 Institute for Women s Leadership, and Spelman College ( athenarutgersspelman-academic-conference). On June 7-8, 2012, attended Seeking Solutions: Maximizing American Talent by Advancing Women of Color in Academia, a conference conducted by the Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine (CWSEM), National Academies of Sciences and disseminated seventy-five copies of Surviving and Thriving in Academia. In June 2012, attended the National Council for Research on Women annual conference Agenda- Health and Wellness Inequity to Equity: Promoting Health and Wellness of Women with Disabilities In October 2011, partnered with the APA Office on Disability Issues in Psychology to host the Inequity to Equity: Promoting Health and Wellness for Women with Disabilities," a twoday conference funded in part by a contract from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office on and Human Services, Office on Women's Health, to develop an integrated health care agenda to improve health outcomes for women with disabilities. The Conference Planning Committee is distilling the ideas generated during the conference to produce a research,
8 practice, and policy agenda that will lay out concrete recommendations on improving how psychologists and other health professionals deliver and facilitate the delivery of health care services to women with disabilities. Drs. Nancy Sidun (former CWP Chair), Erin Andrews (former CDIP member), Julie Williams (CWP member and former CDIP member), Kate Brown (CoR member), and Shari Miles-Cohen (WPO) will participate in a BAPPIsponsored symposium during convention entitled, Promoting the Health and Wellness of Women with Disabilities. Postpartum Depression The Postpartum Depression consumer brochure is currently available in English, French, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese. The WPO has disseminated nearly 5,000 consumer brochures, including partnering with La Clinica de Pueblo, a local Washington, DC area clinic that provides culturally appropriate services to persons in the Latino community regardless of their ability to pay to disseminate the Spanish language PPD brochure. Related Briefings Attended by WPO Staff On April 17, 2012, participated in a working group meeting entitled, Improving Preventive Health Care Services for Women with Disabilities: A Toolbox, convened by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
9 National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), Division of Human Development and Disabilities, and the Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs (AMCHP). Education & Outreach Women with Disabilities in STEM Education (WWDSE) In September 2011, the WPO was awarded a oneyear grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support the Women with Disabilities in STEM Education Research Agenda Development Project. The anticipated goal of the WWDSE is to establish a five-year research agenda to identify barriers and promote successful outcomes for women with disabilities in STEM education. This two-phase project consists of a Delphi survey of NSF and US Department of Education grantees, which should be completed by the end of August 2012, and an experts workshop to be held in October The WWDSE Organizing Committee includes Drs. M. Delores Cimini (co-chair and former CDIP member), University of Albany, SUNY; Patrick Corrigan, Illinois Institute of Technology; Lorraine Fleming, Howard University; Catherine Hill, AAUW; Shari Miles-Cohen (PI and co-chair), APA; and Caroline Solomon, Gallaudet University. 10 initiatives, and announcements about meetings and conferences. Related Briefings Attended by WPO Staff In June 2012, invited to present on the WWDSE project preliminary results on the Broadening Research Participation Panels at the NSF 2012 Joint Annual Meeting of awardees funded by the Directorate for Education and Human Resources Division of the Academy for Human Resource Development, held in Washington, DC. On June 24, 2012 attended a Clearinghouse on Women s Issues panel discussion, entitled Title IX at 40 featuring Dr. Bernice (Bunny) Sandler, a psychologist fondly referred to as the Godmother of Title IX. ( In April 2012, WWDSE co-chair Dr. Dolores Cimini received the White House Champion of Change Award for her work in enhancing access to the STEM disciplines by students with disabilities through her research, leadership, and mentoring efforts, newsletter/2012/04-06/announcements.aspx. Internships In May and June 2012, hosted undergraduate interns who assisted with the APA LIWP and WPO activities at the 2012 annual APA Convention in Orlando, Florida. In March 2012, welcomed back a graduate intern
11 who assists with the APA-NSF WWDSE project and the APA Task Force on the Trafficking of Women and Girls. In June and July 2011, hosted a graduate intern who assisted with the APA Task Force on the Trafficking of Women and Girls, and the APA LIWP. From August through November 2011, hosted undergraduate intern who assisted with the Inequity to Equity conference, and the APA Task Force on Trafficking of Women and Girls. Diversity Multicultural Linkages In July 2012, hosted Lirie Lokaj, a National Albanian American Council Fellows. Ms. Lokaj, who is from Kosovo, Balkans is interested in learning more about gender-related materials that she can use in her
