1 V-rings produt listings Understanding key table elements Designed to be user-friendly, CR Seals and produt listings onvey a good deal of information on every line. As you familiarize yourself with the tables, keep these need-to-know basis in mind: Seal and produt sizes All size listings for all CR Seals produts are arranged by asending shaft diameters, segregated as inh sizes (green bars) and metri sizes (blue bars). All bore and width sizes listed under the green bars are in inhes, while all sizes listed under blue bars are in mm. Bore / width One you have seleted the right shaft size, you will need to identify the seals with a mathing bore size. The reommended tolerane ranges for shaft and bore an be found on pages While it is important to hoose a seal with a lose math to shaft and bore, it is less important to hoose a seal with a predetermined width. As long as the seal is short enough not to protrude out of the bore, it will work just ine. Preferred designs Highlighted in bold in the Part and Seal Type olumns, preferred seal design listings represent the highest performing or otherwise best suited sealing solution for a given shaft diameter. E = SKF Edge: SKF Edge shaft seals HMS5 and HMSA10 ombine an SKF-developed NBR ompound with a rubber outside diameter aording to ISO/DIN global design standards primarily available in metri sizes. F = SKF Flex: SKF Flex seals deliver heavy-duty performane in fully ustomizable sizes and features to it and perform in the appliation. S = Standard oil seal: SKF arries some older designs that do not have the modern advanements of the SKF Edge or SKF Wave lips, but may be adequate for some appliations. Use these when SKF Edge or SKF Wave seals are not available in the size needed. G = Grease seal: Oil seals an handle oil or grease appliations, but grease seals do not have the garter spring needed for oil retention, so they are for grease only. Normally you point the lip away from grease if the main onern is water/dirt ingression, whih also allows the grease to purge if needed. The CR Seals Waste- Wather program helps distributors optimize seal inventories. Bore-Tite: Indiates the seal uses SKF Bore-Tite, a green, water-based aryli sealant used as a oating on the outside diameter of the seal. SS Case: Indiates the seal has a stainless steel seal ase. SS Spring: Indiates the seal has a stainless steel seal lip spring. Pressure seal up to 50 psi: Suitable for higher-pressure sealing appliations; typial industrial shaft seals an handle only up to 5 or 10 psi. 2 V-ring seals Suitable for an extremely wide range of appliations, V-ring seals keep ontaminants out of many bearing types. Often they are used as seondary seals to help protet primary seals in highly ontaminated environments. Form and funtion V-rings are installed on shafts and their thin, tapered lip seals against a bore perpendiular to the shaft ( ig. 1a). V-rings have an interferene it on the shaft, rotate with it and at as lingers ( ig. 1b). Angular misalignment of the shaft relative to the bore an be tolerated ( ig. 1). V-rings provide reliable sealing even if the shaft is out-of-round or rotates eentrially ( ig. 1d). The amount by whih the shaft an be displaed axially is governed by the permissible displaement of the V-ring relative to the bore. Flexible installation and operation V-rings are made entirely of elastomers without fabri or metal reinforement. Combining a lexible seal body, a onial-shaped sealing lip and an integral, resilient hinge ( ig. 2), v-rings an be strethed and, depending on size, easily pushed and installed over other omponents like langes, pulleys or even housings. Inherent tension from the seal body holds the lip in plae as it rotates with the shaft and seals axially against a stationary housing bore. This an be the end fae of a bearing, a washer, stamping, bearing housing, or even the metal ase of arotary shaft seal. The lexible lip and hinge provide adequate sealing even in appliations with onsiderable endplay and shaft misalignment. Thanks to entrifugal fore, the ontat pressure of the lip dereases as speed inreases, resulting in lower heat and frition losses and ultimately, improved wear resistane and extended servie life. Materials V-rings are normally made of nitrile rubber that features good hemial resistane, resistane to wear and an be used in appliations with temperatures ranging from 40 to +210 F ( 40 to +100 C). For appliations exposed to higher temperatures and/or aggressive media, V-rings made of luoro rubber are available. 3 Standard designs and size range V-ring seals from SKF are available in ive basi designs: VA/VR1 has a standard ross setion and straight bak sidefae. Our most ommonly used V-ring, VA/VR1 typially protets bearing arrangements in gearboxes, eletri motors and drives. Permissible operating onditions Table 1 VS/VR2 has a standard low ross setion, tapered bak fae and wide body; ommonly used in agriultural and automotive appliations. VL/VR3 feature a very ompat axial ross setion; this seal is ommonly used in onined spaes to enhane labyrinth seals. VE/VR4 funtion as seondary seals for heavy-duty appliations where the primary seal needs protetion from water and/or solid ontaminants. With the largest ross setion of any V-ring, VE/VR4 permits the largest axial displaements. Available in diameters from to in (300 to 2,010 mm). V-rings from SKF are available for the shaft diameter ranges listed in Table 2. In addition, speial sizes and designs, inluding split versions, an be made to order. 4 V-ring seals Appliations Figure 3 Figure 6 V-rings are suitable for both grease and oil lubriated appliations. For sealing grease-lubriated bearing arrangements and proteting against ontaminants, V-ring should be arranged outside the housing over or housing wall. Dust, water spray and other ontaminants an be exluded in this position ( ig. 3). The V-ring an also at as a grease valve, where used grease or exess new grease an esape between the housing bore and the sealing lip ( ig. 4). The installation of two opposing V-rings an be used in appliations where lubriant retention and ontaminant exlusion are of equal importane ( ig. 5). If V-rings are used to retain oil, they should always be loated axially on the shaft on the lubriant side ( ig. 6). V-rings should not be submerged in the appliation medium. 5 Sliding veloities V-rings an operate under the onditions listed in Table 1. At speeds of 2,900 to 3,900 ft/min (15 to 20 m/s), the sealing lip lifts from the ounterfae and the V-ring only ats as a gap-type seal. Coaxiality and runout toleranes Table 3 K d1 Coaxiality and runout The total tolerane for the deviation from oaxiality and runout should not exeed the guideline values provided in Table 3. Misalignment Shaft diameter nominal Total tolerane for oaxiality deviation and runout V-rings an tolerate misalignment between the shaft and housing, or deviations from the perpendiularity between the shaft and housing bore. Diagram 1 provides values for the maximum permissible angular misalignment; these values apply to the V-ring designs VA/ VR1 and VS/VR2, provided they are supported axially on the shaft. The permissible misalignment values for the ompat VL/VR3 seals are signiiantly lower than those for the VA/VR1 and VS/VR2 designs. 6 V-ring seals Bore inish and treatment A ine-turned housing bore is adequate for V-rings. Appropriate surfae roughness values vary depending on the irumferential speed ( Table 4). SKF reommends bufing all turned surfaes with an emery loth to remove any sharp peaks aused during the turning operation. The surfae inish should be measured at approximately 90 to the path of the groove to obtain a true reading of the surfae. When used with grease, oil or dry lubriants, V-rings do not require any speial housing bore treatments. Mild steel bores exposed to water or other orrosives should be proteted with zin- or hromium-plating, or be treated with an anti-orrosive spray. Additional bore requirements Aluminium surfaes should be free of srath marks. Surfae hardness should be > 100 HB in abrasive appliations. Die ast aluminum an be used in the as-ast ondition. Steel and ast iron surfaes should be free from lead and sharp tool marks. Cold rolled steel stampings an be used without mahining. Plasti ounterfae materials are generally not aeptable due to poor heat dissipation. Stainless steel should not be used in dry running appliations unless the speed is below 200 ft/min (1 m/s). Shaft requirements To help prevent damage to the V-ring during installation, shafts must be free from sharp edges, niks and burrs. V-rings rotate with the shaft and only require a moderate surfae roughness value, whih should not exeed 252 μin (Ra 6,3 μm). When sealing luids or exposed to ine, solid ontaminants, the V-ring requires a surfae roughness value of maximum 128 μin (Ra 3,2 μm). A V-ring is strethed when installed and its all shaft diameters within the ranges listed in the produt tables. Installing V-rings V-rings are elasti and an be strethed and pushed over other omponents ( ig. 9). When installation involves several V-rings, a simple tool ( ig. 10) an be used to push the seals to their position at a predetermined distane from the ounterfae. V-rings an also be ut and rejoined in the ield. General installation guidelines Clean the V-ring, housing bore and shaft. Make sure that the shaft is dry and free from grease or oil Lubriate the V-ring lip with a thin ilm of grease or silione oil. In appliations that demand minimal frition, oat the housing bore with a low-frition agent (do not apply grease to the lip). Chek that the V-ring is installed with a uniform streth around the shaft.
