GICS sponsorship feedback report Name GICS number Job / Position Group / Hospital Region Suzette Kruger 278ef36e Infection Prevention Specialist Life Healthcare / Life Dalview Hospital East Date of Conference 9-11 November 2017 Name of Conference FIDSSA Venue Century City Conference Centre City Cape Town Country South Africa National / International conference National conference Number of presentations as per programme 92 Number of abstract submissions 178 Number of abstract submissions presented orally 26 Number posters 120 Number of countries that attended 25 Number of countries that presented 12 Number of participants 530 Background The Federation of Infectious Diseases Societies of Southern Africa (FIDSSA) is an amalgamation of different existing societies: IDSSA, SASCM, SASPID, SASTM, STDSSA and ICSSA. The societies maintain their individual areas of expertise and identities, yet share administrative support, a journal and a biennial national congress. The Gauteng Infection Control Society (GICS) affiliates with the Infection Control Society of Southern Africa (ICCSA). At each FIDSSA conference a biennial general meeting is held for each society. Dr Yolanda van Zyl was elected the new Chairperson (Joy Cleghorn was for the past 8 years) Treasurer - Lesley Devenish (re-elected) and Secretary - Karin Swart (previously Yolanda van Zyl). Introduction A FIDSSA sponsorship competition was held by GICS. It was open to all registered/enrolled nurses that have a passion for infection prevention and control, from various healthcare private groups: LHC, Netcare, Mediclinic and independent groups, as well as the public sector. The applicants had to present a PowerPoint presentation on: How to manage an internal outbreak at the GICS symposium held on 21 June2017. The sponsorship included: FIDSSA registration fee, accommodation for three nights and flight to and back from Cape Town including travel to and from the airport.
The 7 th international FIDSSA conference I attended presented various topics relating to our field in infection prevention and control. This conference provided a full opportunity for constructive dialogue as well. I would like to thank GICS for giving me the opportunity to attend the conference via the sponsorship funding which covered my expenses. This conference was very interesting and enriched my experience with more information, knowledge and confidence. Photo: (2 nd from left) Dr Yolanda van Zyl new Chairperson for ICSSA enjoying delectable refreshments with other delegates. Photo: GICS sponsor: Suzette Kruger, ICSSA previous Chairperson: Joy Cleghorn and FIDSSA President Prof Marc Mendelson (from left to right) Presentations As seen in summary table on previous page, it wasn t possible to attend each presentation due to the fact that some ran parallel to one another. It was difficult to decide what lectures to attend since there were so many interesting topics, great international and local speakers. I tried to attend as many of the presentations as possible. A tip for the future person winning this sponsorship: Study the programme in advance which will assist you in choosing what lectures to attend. Herewith some interesting information and facts that was presented: Surveillance of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases: Larry Madoff, USA. A website that you can subscribe to for free ( is an international based reporting system dedicated to rapid global dissemination of information on outbreaks and infectious diseases it also monitor acute exposures to toxins that affect human health, including those in animals and in plants grown for human or animal feed. Electronic communications enable up-to-date and reliable news. Transmission networks and risk of HIV infection in KwaZulu, Natal: Prof Quarrhaisha Abdool Karim, UKZN. This presenter made us realize again the huge impact HIV is having on our society. She stated that people globally is infected with HIV on a weekly basis, 64% of HIV cases is in Africa, 19% in South Africa (1in 5 cases), currently rating number one in the world although our population is only 1% of the world population and 8% more women than men is infected with HIV. Prevalence of HIV in pregnant women attending public health clinics is: < 16 yrs. 11.5%, yrs. 21.3%, yrs. 30.4%, yrs. 39.4%, yrs. 49.5%, >25 yrs. 51.9%. We seriously have to investigate new plans to address this crisis issue. She concludes with a saying of Nelson Mandela: It always looks impossible, until it s done".
Impact of effective treatment on TB transmission, problem of reducing transmission failures: Edward Nardell USA. Involved with TB research facility at Witbank. Some findings thus far are that some patients will have positive TB results but not be infectious. So we actually have to focus more on the waiting areas in hospital which is a bigger risk of contracting TB then the isolation room of a TB patient. Surgical masks worn by TB patients, only 53% effective. TB needs to be stopped, caused in past 200 years. TB related deaths in 2015 ( ) combined with HIV/AIDS ( ) and HIV/AIDS alone ( ) UV 80% effective in TB, needs further research. Photo: Presenter and delegates. Congress Chair, Professor Sipho Dlamini Environmental cleaning for persistent resistant organisms: Marilyn Leadson UCT. It s important to search and contain, destroy not achievable. She gives research facts on the various organisms and their time found in the environment. E (5 days-46 months) S (7 d-12 m) K (2 hours - 30 m) A (3d-11m) P (6 h-16m) E (?) Clostridium difficile (5 m) Norovirus (2 m) and Candida auris (???). This reflects the importance of continuous proper cleaning of the environment. Prevention of HAI s: Stephan Harbarth (Switzerland). Some of the research being done by WHO has shown controversial findings such as: Laminar air flow has no impact on SSI s, no shaving of any form is preferable; decolonization with Chlorexidine is of special value for MRSA and MSSA. Hand decontamination decrease the bacterial load within seconds, preferable to start with fingertips first and 3ml alcohol hand rub to be used, big hands even more. The 10 commandments reflected the key elements to be successful in IPC. See slides
There was so many more interesting lecture attended by sponsor but this report will become very lengthy even if just to give a summary of all. There was a Veterinarian (Stowaways: A one health perspective: Emily Mitchell) and an electrical engineer (Limitations of natural ventilation and room cleaners in controlling airborne infections: Tobias van Reenen CSIR) presenting for the first time at FIDSSA conference. Lesley Devenish presented an excellent abstract on: The risk assessment for transmission of infectious diseases in the SAPS. I think I ll have to attach the FIDSSA scientific programme to this report, just to see some of the interesting topics. Posters Each society that forms part of FIDSSA has delegates that present posters on their field of expertize and research undertaken. Trade exhibitions See photos
Conclusion THANK YOU once again - GICS!!!! I would definitely recommend that all GICS members participate in the following competition for sponsorship to the IPC related conferences. I loved this huge swing which was in the hotel where I stayed. An excellent place to reflect!
