1 DR REDDY S/SESIG PARALLEL WEEKEND MEETING INVITATION April 2013; Oubaai Resort, George Dear colleague, As you may know, we had our first SESIG Strategic Planning meeting last year in Windhoek. As a result of that meeting, twelve SASOP/SESIG position statements on Psychiatric Care in the Public Sector were formulated, which were also published as a supplement to the South African Journal of Psychiatry. 1 This document was also compiled as a framework for SESIG and SASOP activities during the current term of Through ongoing generous sponsorship from Dr Reddy s, we have another opportunity to again invite 50 private and 50 public sector delegates to this year s parallel weekend meeting, planned for April 2013, at Oubaai Resort, George. We have two main objectives for this meeting, namely to: (1) operationalize the twelve SASOP/SESIG position statements in order to derive action plans, indicators and time frames for implementation on a regional and a national level: and (2) conduct a public/private sector consensus meeting on the proposed SASOP treatment guidelines. The convenor of this meeting is AdjProf. Bernard van Rensburg (SASOP Honorary Secretary) who, in this regard, collaborated closely with the SASOP Board of Directors and with SESIG National Convener Dr. Robin Allen. The weekend will consist of strategic business sessions, as well as selected academic presentations by local experts. Public delegates to the meeting will be invited on a proportional representative basis per region. We are looking forward to meet again on these important issues with the eight academic heads, with representatives from the different regional SESIG structures and with colleagues in private and public practice, including those who were instrumental in the development of the proposed treatment guidelines. PS 11(a) on Forensic observations PS 11(b) on State patients PS 11(c) on Mental ill prisoners # Close collaboration and co-ordination should occur between the processes of establishing SASOP and national STGs, and the related decisions on EDLs for different levels. This will also require liaison with private sector practitioners. It can also be suggested that the authors of the SASOP STGs (who followed a formal peer-review process) and the NEDLC should form a standing committee and/or other structures for ongoing liaison to explore procedural issues, as well as the current and ongoing revision of the current different lists of available drugs. If, however, finalising the national EDL would occur in the absence of such close collaboration and co-ordination in the EDL and STG processes, SASOP will have to express its grave concern, as psychiatry as a specialist clinical discipline will be prejudiced against, while the availability of evidence-based medications will be threatened, in particular, within the public sector. 6
