Expansion Valves - TXV Section V: Table of Contents Basic Information EXPANSION VALVES (TXV) The expansion valve is the carburetor of the A/C system.

At this point, high pressure (high temperature) liquid refrigerant is sprayed into the evaporator where it changes state and becomes a gas.

A liquid/gas filled mixture inside these sealed temperature sensing tubes puts pressure on the diaphragm of the TXV, which opens and closes the metering valve.

1 Expansion Valves - TXV Section V: Table of Contents Basic Information EXPANSION VALVES (TXV) The expansion valve is the carburetor of the A/C system. It is one of the dividing lines between the high and low side of the system. At this point, high pressure (high temperature) liquid refrigerant is sprayed into the evaporator where it changes state and becomes a gas. Depending on the type of TXV, the amount of refrigerant metered into the evaporator is done through the use of its capillary and/or equalizer tubes. A liquid/gas filled mixture inside these sealed temperature sensing tubes puts pressure on the diaphragm of the TXV, which opens and closes the metering valve. This action allows the valve to meter the correct amount of refrigerant into the evaporator. There are several types of TXVs, all of which function basically the same. All are subject to clogging and sticking open or closed, and therefore must be cleaned at regular intervals or replaced when necessary. Another type of expansion valve used on some late model GMC, Fords and Peterbilts is the CCOT Cycling Clutch Orifice Tube. The CCOT tube is not repairable and contains no sensing devices. It is highly subject to clogging and must be replaced whenever any repair is made to the system. ORIFICE TUBES/EXPANSION TUBES Orifice Tubes / Expansion Tubes consist of a filter screen to remove contaminants, and a calibrated tube to meter refrigerant flow. Like an expansion valve they are mounted on the inlet side of the evaporator. They are found on vehicles using an accumulator instead of a receiver drier. CCOT (clutch cycling orifice tube) and FFOT (ford fixed orifice tube) systems. Both systems create the pressure drop by metering a steady flow of refrigerant while the compressor is operating. The cyling clutch switch, either a thermosatic switch or a pressure cycling switch turns the compressor on and off. The intermittent compressor operation controls the refrigerant flow and pressure. The use of a nicked expansion valve depends on the design of the system. The life of the compressor will greatly be reduced if a no nick or non bleed valve is put in place of the nicked or bleed valve type that the system was designed for. A nicked seat expansion valve allows a small amount of refrigerant and oil to leak through the valve seat when it is in a shut position.
