MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL "It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last year s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year. Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement. I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students. It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead. The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students. The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students. I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination. Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on this path. My best wishes to all. Dr. A. Sengupta 2

EDITORIAL BOARD CHIEF EDITOR EDITOR ASSOCIATE EDITOR DR. ABHIJIT SENGUPTA MR.DIPANJAN MANDAL MS.MOUMITA CHOWDHURY HISTORICAL ARTICLE Jacob Berzelius Jacob Berzelius was one of the founders of modern chemistry. He was the first person to measure accurate atomic weights for the elements, which helped to confirm Dalton s Atomic Theory and was the basis of Mendeleev s periodic table. He discovered three chemical elements: cerium, thorium, and selenium, and devised the modern method by which one or two letters are used to symbolize the elements. He identified and named the phenomenon of catalysis, and described how chemical bonds can form by electrostatic attraction nowadays called ionic bonding. Beginnings: Jöns Jacob Berzelius was born on August 20, 1779 in the parish of Väversunda, in Sweden s East Gotland province. His mother was Elizabeth Dorothea Sjösteen and his father was Samuel Berzelius, a high school teacher. Jacob s parents both came from church pastors families. Jacob s father died when Jacob was four years old. Two years later, his mother married a pastor by the name of Anders Eckmarck, who taught Jacob about the natural world and how to read and write. 3

Sadly, Jacob s mother died when he was nine years old, leaving Anders to look after Jacob and seven other children. In 1791, when Jacob was 12, his stepfather remarried. Jacob moved to live with his uncle Magnus Sjösteen. Sjösteen s wife was an alcoholic, struggling to raise her own seven children. Jacob kept out of her way as much as possible, spending time outside the house. In spring 1793, when Jacob was 13, he started at the Cathedral School in Linköping, where he tutored wealthy pupils to get money to pay his boarding fees. He paid little attention to the school s requirements of learning about the Church, devoting his time to the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting, and became an enthusiastic insect collector. Contributions and Achievements: In 1808, Berzelius discovered that lactic acid, previously discovered in milk, is also present in muscle tissue. Later he discovered lactic acid exists as two optical isomers. Berzelius s achievement in determining the atomic weights of the elements was a remarkable tour de force. To achieve it, he had synthesized, then purified, then analyzed over two thousand chemical compounds often carrying out several repeats at each stage to ensure accuracy. In fact, the task was so formidable that in 1818 Berzelius had a nervous breakdown. His doctor advised him to travel and forget all about his work. Berzelius spent a year in Paris, but spent most of his time there on chemistry. Nevertheless, he made a full recovery. 4

Berzelius discovered thorium in 1815, and, working with Johan Gahn, discovered selenium in Johan Arfwedson discovered lithium in 1817 while working in Berzelius s laboratory. In 1824, Berzelius produced the first silicon of sufficient purity to determine its properties. Berzelius s work with batteries led him to believe chemical bonds were made when a positively charged ion attracted a negatively charged ion through electrostatic attraction. Today we call this type of chemical bond an ionic bond. Berzelius received numerous awards and was made a member of Sweden s nobility by King Karl in He avoided the social life of the nobility, preferring to talk shop with other scientists. Some Personal Details and the End: Berzelius married Elisabeth Poppius in He was 56 and she, the daughter of a government minister, was 24. They had no children. He suffered ill-health in his later years, including gout, which confined him to a wheelchair. He was also plagued by a faltering memory. Some of his health issues probably resulted from a lifetime of working with chemicals. Berzelius worked in a time when chemicals were usually first identified by their taste, and the air in laboratories was often filled with toxic vapors. Jöns Jacob Berzelius died, age 68, on August 7, 1848 in Stockholm, where he was buried in the Solna cemetery. He was survived by his wife Elisabeth. 5

NEWS UPDATE Engineers develop a programmable 'camouflaging' material inspired by octopus skin: (12 th October, 2017) Engineers have invented stretchable surfaces with programmable 3-D texture morphing, a synthetic 'camouflaging skin' inspired by studying and modeling the real thing in octopus and cuttlefish. Higher dose of vitamin D increases bone density in premature babies, study finds: (13 th October, 2017) If the standard supplementation of 400 IUs of vitamin D is increased to 800 IUs daily there are reductions in the number of premature and preterm babies with extremely low bone density, new research has found. Usutu virus is back: Not only in blackbirds but also in humans:( 13th October, 2017) Usutu virus, a flavivirus of African origin, was first detected in Austria in 2001, when it caused a severe bird die-off, mainly of blackbirds. The virus was active in the eastern part of Austria until 2005, killing many blackbirds, but also other songbirds. During 10 subsequent years no Usutu virus associated bird mortality was observed in Austria -- contrary to neighboring Hungary. Last year Usutu virus was identified again in two 6

blackbirds -- and in 2017 already in sixteen songbirds. In another study Usutu virus was demonstrated in seven human blood donations from eastern Austria, suggesting that human infections seem to be more frequent than previously thought. Possible new treatment pathway for severe allergic asthma:( 12th October, 2017) Research demonstrates that blocking the action of two proinflammatory molecules significantly reduces symptoms of allergic asthma in mice, which could lead to development of a new treatment for people with a severe form of the condition. New mechanism detected in Alzheimer's disease:( 13th October, 2017) Researchers have discovered a cellular mechanism that may contribute to the breakdown of communication between neurons in Alzheimer's disease. In the brain tissue of Alzheimer's patients, the RNAs that encode synaptic proteins are degraded more rapidly than in healthy brain cells, the researchers found. Their findings indicate that inadequate levels of a protein known as RBFOX1 may be a factor in the faulty connections that are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. State laws requiring autism coverage by private insurers led to increases in autism care:( 11th October, 2017) The enactment of state laws mandating coverage of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was followed by sizable increases in 7

insurer-covered ASD care and associated spending, a new study has found. Like it or not: Broccoli may be good for the gut:( 12th October, 2017) For the broccoli haters of the world, researchers may have more bad news: the vegetable may also help promote a healthy gut. Cause of cancer form in the liver identified:( 12th October, 2017) Researchers have identified the two genes whose mutation cause a serious cancer form found in the liver. The result sets concrete goals for future treatment of the otherwise incurable disease. Climate change may accelerate infectious disease outbreaks, say researchers :( 12th October, 2017) Aside from inflicting devastating natural disasters on often vulnerable communities, climate change can also spur outbreaks of infectious diseases like Zika, malaria and dengue fever, according to a new study. 9 KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE HISTORY OF TOXICOLOGY Man undertook his first experiment in toxicology in a search of an acceptable diet when he moved out of the habitat in which he evolved. In Roman and Greek times poisons, generally of plant origin, were used for murder and suicide. William Withering described digitalis toxicity in 1785, and about 1790 Hahnemann, the founder of homoeopathy, carried out toxicological studies on himself and his healthy friends with therapeutic agents of his time, including cinchona, aconite, belladonna, ipecacuaha and mercury. In World War I a variety of poisonous chemicals were used in the battlefields of Northern France. This was the stimulus for much work on mechanisms of toxicity as well as medical counter measures to poisoning. In fact, war or the prospect of war played a great part in the development of toxicology as of many other sciences. Much of the basic work on organophosphates was stimulated by the discovery of these compounds in Germany in the 1930s. Occupational toxicology originated in the 19 th century as a product of the industrial revolution, with early descriptions, of 9

occupational diseases induced by chemicals, such as cancer of the scrotum in chimney sweeps. Regulatory toxicology had its origins in the development of the chemicals and pharmaceutical industries in the 19 th and 20 th centuries. Toxicology has only come of age as a science in the last 30 years as concern for consumer and worker health and for the environment increased. The growth of the science has been fuelled by a succession of disasters such as Seveso, Bhopal and that of thalidomide, which have thrown up lacunae in knowledge of the toxic effects of substances, as well as the inadequacy of testing procedures. One of the earliest such disasters was the deaths of 107 people from poisoning by an elixir of sulphanilamide containing the solvent diethylene glycol in 1937 in the USA: this led to legislation forbidding the marketing of new drugs until cleared for safety by the US FDA. Regulations have been elaborated at national, continental (EC and OECD) and international levels (WHO/FAO) for each major type of chemical, including human and veterinary drugs, pesticides food additives and industrial chemicals. Clinical toxicology, the treatment of acute poisoning, was originally carried out by general physicians in general hospitals; in this respect it was an old branch of toxicology; indeed amyl nitrite, one of the earliest antidotes (for cyanide), was described in the 10

1880s. Chelation therapy for heavy metal poisoning was discovered during a search for a method of treatment for organic arsenical poisoning during World War II, while oximes for organophosphate poisoning were developed during the cold war in the 1950s and 1960s. Dipanjan Mandal Assistant Professor GNIPST DISEASE RELATED BREAKING NEWS Vietnam reports downward trend in dengue cases:( 12 th October, 2017) As of Oct. 5, there were 143,254 cases of dengue reported in Viet Nam including 30 deaths.week to week (38 to 39), health officials have seen a 25.9% reduction in cases. In Hanoi alone this year, 32,000 dengue cases and 7 deaths have been reported. In the past 50 years, the incidence of dengue worldwide has increased 30- fold, largely as a consequence of the growth of cities and increased travel.dengue fever is an infectious disease carried by mosquitoes and caused by any of four related dengue viruses. This disease used to be called break-bone fever because it sometimes causes severe joint and muscle pain that feels like bones are breaking. Read more 11
