2 MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL "It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last year s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year. Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement. I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students. It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead. The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students. The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students. I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination. Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on this path. My best wishes to all. Dr. A. Sengupta 2

3 EDITORIAL BOARD CHIEF EDITOR EDITOR ASSOCIATE EDITOR DR. ABHIJIT SENGUPTA MR.DIPANJAN MANDAL MS.MOUMITA CHOWDHURY HISTORICAL ARTICLE Joseph Banks ( ) Sir Joseph Banks was an eminent English naturalist, explorer and botanist, noted for his promotion of natural sciences. He also remains the longest serving president of the Royal Society of London. Early Life and Education: Born in London on January 4, 1743 in a rich family, Joseph Banks inherited a sizeable fortune when his father, William Banks, a famous doctor, died. He took admission in Christ Church, Oxford, in When he left the college in 1763, he had an extensive knowledge of natural history, particularly of botany. Contributions and Achievements: Joseph Banks was selected a Fellow of the Royal Society in He joined Captain Cook on his 1763 voyage around the world. Dr. Solander, a friend of Banks, also accompanied him as a naturalist. After their return, both wanted to publish a botanical work as they had acquired huge collections of natural objects from the expedition. Due to Solander s unexpected death, they were unable to complete it. Banks also toured Iceland in Banks became the president of the Royal Society in 1777, where he remained until He was known as a prominent endorser of travelers and scientific men. Many voyages of discovery were approved and carried out under his supervision. He was the first person to introduce the Western world to acacia, mimosa, eucalyptus and Banksia, a genus named after him. About 80 other species of plants were also named after him. Banks also established the fact that marsupial mammals were more primitive than placental mammals. Joseph Banks was knighted in He was made a member of the Privy Council in He was also appointed an associate of the Institute of France In Two of his 3

5 Past exposures shape immune response in pediatric acute respiratory infections:(12 th January, 2018) By analyzing immune cells of children who came to the emergency department with flu symptoms, researchers found that the suite of genes these early-response cells expressed was shaped by factors such as age and previous exposures to viruses. Better understanding how early infections influence long-term immune response has implications for the diagnosis and treatment of young patients who suffer from acute respiratory tract infections. Promise of new antibiotics lies with shackling tiny toxic tetherballs to bacteria:(9 th January, 2018) Biologists have developed a method for rapidly screening hundreds of thousands of potential drugs for fighting infections, an innovation that holds promise for combating the growing scourge of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. 6 For detail mail to editor KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE INCIDENCES OF BREAST CANCER THROUGHOUT LONG-TERM HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY Presently, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the most effective treatment for the relief of estrogen-deficiency symptoms; if administrated on long-term basis, it will prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. However, HRT is not without risk. When in the 1960s HRT was first prescribed to postmenopausal women it was only given as estrogen replacement therapy (ERT). Nonetheless, 10 years later an increment of endometrial cancer was evidenced in patients who underwent ERT. In the 1970s,HRT that included combined estrogen and progestin was recommended for protection against endometrial cancer. Despite reports that speak in favour and against HTR, it is well known that any association of progestins with breast cancer risk remains controversial. Progestins in human breast cancer cell lines have demonstrated biphasic cellular response such as: proliferate and anti-proliferate; initial exposure to these hormones results in proliferate burst with sustained exposure resulting in growth inhibition. Hence, favorable response depends on duration of treatment with the possibility of improving mortality and survival rates of women with breast cancer. In the early beginnings of HRT different estrogens and progestins were orally administered according to pre-established patterns and dosages. More recently, other ways of administration (transdermal, intravaginal) as well a variety of estrogens and progestins have been employed. The known 26 families of progestins have different enzymatic properties as based on the concept of selective estrogen enzyme modulation (SEEM). The analysis of previous results adds to the controversy and explains the disputed status of HRT because the 6

7 difficulty in its management stems, among other things, from the difficulty of comparing different substances with different exerting power on the enzymes involved in the conversion of estrogens at the target tissues.
