MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL "It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last year s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year. Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement. I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students. It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead. The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students. The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students. I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination. Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on this path. My best wishes to all. Dr. A. Sengupta 2

EDITORIAL BOARD CHIEF EDITOR EDITOR ASSOCIATE EDITOR DR. ABHIJIT SENGUPTA MR.DIPANJAN MANDAL MS.MOUMITA CHOWDHURY HISTORICAL ARTICLE Nettie Stevens Nettie Stevens discovered that an organism s sex is determined by its chromosomes now known as the XY sex-determination system: females have two of the same kind of sex chromosome (XX); males have two different sex chromosomes (XY). The discovery was also the first time that a link was demonstrated between a physical characteristic (sex) and differences in chromosomes. Beginnings: Nettie Maria Stevens was born on July 7, 1861 in Cavendish, Vermont, USA. Her father was Ephraim Stevens, a carpenter. Her mother was Julia Adams, who died when Nettie was just two years old. In 1865 her father married Ellen Thompson. The Stevens family, consisting of father, step-mother, Nettie and her younger sister Emma, then relocated to Westford, Massachusetts. Nettie attended public elementary schools in Westford, where her remarkable academic ability was noticed by her teachers. Her father s business prospered in Westford and Nettie attended Westford Academy, a private school. She enrolled there in 1872, 3

aged 11, and graduated in 1880, aged 18. Nettie s younger sister Emma also attended Westford Academy, and she too proved to be an exceptionally talented student. Emma went on to become a high school teacher. Westford Academy taught its students a rather traditional classical curriculum emphasizing Latin, Greek, English, and mathematics. Contributions and Achievements: Discovery of New Species While she was working for her master s degree, Stevens discovered two new species of single-celled organisms: Licnophora macfarlandi and Boveria subcylindrica; she also documented their life cycles. Chromosomes Determine the Sex of Offspring In 1866 Gregor Mendel had established the rules of heredity the rules governing how parental traits pass to offspring. Nobody noticed the huge significance of his work until it was rediscovered in about By 1900 it was already well-known to cytologists that an offspring inherits equal numbers of chromosomes from each of its parents they had seen this under their microscopes. Nobody, however, had been able to prove a link between Mendel s rules and the role of chromosomes. Establishing what part, if any, chromosomes played in heredity had become a very hot topic. Furthermore, nobody knew how the sex of an offspring was determined. There were different theories, including a theory that 4

chromosomes determined sex. Most scientists, however, believed sex was decided by external factors, such as temperature and nutrition, acting on a fertilized egg. They did not believe that sex was decided by chromosomes at the instant of fertilization. In 1903 Stevens applied for funding from the Carnegie Institute of Washington saying: I am especially interested in the histological side of the problems in heredity connected with Mendel s Law, and I know that there is need of a great deal of painstaking work along that line. She received a $1,000 grant for the year to investigate problems relating to sex determination. She won a further $1,000 in 1905 the Ellen Richards Prize for the best scientific paper written by a woman for A Study of the Germ Cells of Aphis rosae and Aphis oenotherae. Stevens actually wrote this paper in December 1904, at which time she was still uncertain about the source of sex determination. In her papers Stevens showed that an organism s sex is determined by specific chromosomes today we would say that males have XY and females XX sex chromosomes. In doing so she also provided the first evidence that a physical characteristic in this case the sex of an individual is linked to differences in chromosomes. Edmund Beecher Wilson of Columbia University, America s first cell biologist, independently made the same discovery as Stevens, also in

Some Personal Details and the End: In 1905 Stevens became an associate in experimental morphology at Bryn Mawr College. In 1912 a research professorship was created for her, but she died before she could begin working in her new role. Nettie Maria Stevens died aged 50 of breast cancer on May 4, 1912 in Baltimore, Maryland. She never married and had no children. She was remembered by her students as a rather shy, unassuming teacher. She was remembered by other members of the faculty at Bryn Mawr as a talented researcher working in a difficult field who had achieved a worldwide reputation among biologists. She was always on hand to help willingly with teaching or any other college related work. Nettie Stevens was laid to rest in the cemetery at Westfield, Massachusetts beside the graves of her father and step-mother. Her sister Emma s ashes were also placed there in NEWS UPDATE New species can develop in as little as two generations, Galapagos study finds:(24 th November, 2017) A study of Darwin's finches, which live on the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean, has revealed direct genetic evidence that new species can arise in just two generations. 6

Small but distinct differences among species mark evolution of human brain:(24 th November, 2017) The most dramatic divergence between humans and other primates can be found in the brain, the primary organ that gives our species its identity. However, all regions of the human brain have molecular signatures very similar to those of our primate relatives, yet some regions contain distinctly human patterns of gene activity that mark the brain's evolution and may contribute to our cognitive abilities, a new study has found. Avatar therapy may help to reduce auditory hallucinations for people with schizophrenia:( 24 th November, 2017) An experimental therapy which involves a face-to-face discussion between a person with schizophrenia and an avatar representing their auditory hallucination may help reduce symptoms, when provided alongside usual treatment, according to a study. How badly do you want something? Babies can tell:( 24 th November, 2017) Babies as young as 10 months can assess how much someone values a particular goal by observing how hard they are willing to work to achieve it, according to a new study. This ability requires integrating information about both the costs of obtaining a goal and the benefit gained by the person seeking it, suggesting that babies acquire very early an intuition about how people make decisions. 7

Antibiotics resistance: Researchers succeed to block genes of resistance:(22 nd November, 2017) Scientists have design better molecules that make it harder for plasmids to move between bacteria. Smart people have better connected brains:(22 nd November, 2017) Differences in intelligence have so far mostly been attributed to differences in specific brain regions. However, are smart people's brains also wired differently to those of less intelligent persons? A new study supports this assumption. In intelligent persons, certain brain regions are more strongly involved in the flow of information between brain regions, while other brain regions are less engaged. Frictional heat powers hydrothermal activity on Enceladus:( 22 nd November, 2017) A computer simulation shows how icy moon heats water in a porous rock core. This study also offers among others an answer to the long-standing question of where the energy that can support water in liquid form on a small, cryovulcanic moon far from the sun comes from. Radiographs of Dolly's skeleton show no signs of abnormal osteoarthritis:(23 rd November, 2017) Original concerns that cloning caused early-onset osteoarthritis (OA) in Dolly the sheep are unfounded, report experts. 8

Rise in oxygen levels links to ancient explosion of life, researchers find:( 20 th November, 2017) Scientists have found that oxygen levels appear to increase by roughly 80 percent at about the same time as a three-fold increase in biodiversity during the Ordovician Period, between 445 and 485 million years ago. For detail mail to editor KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE Role of flavonoids in cancer therapy The use of these agents for cancer prevention is driven by epidemiology supporting the idea that regional diets and consumption of specific dietary component such as soya isoflavones are associated with lower risk for cancer. Epidemiological and preclinical evidence suggests that polyphenolic phytochemicals posses cancer chemopreventive properties due to their antioxidant activity. Flavonoids are thought to wield their anticancer properties by directly or indirectly counterbalancing the superoxide free radicals produced from our diet or other environmental factors. Although patients with established cancer have already sustained DNA damage in order to mutate from benign to malignant cells, avoiding 9

further DNA insult may avoid further mutation of indolent malignant or premalignant cells into more aggressive phenotypes. The high intake of foods and beverages rich in flavonoids has been associated with decreased risk of neoplasm. Dietary flavonoids inhibit the proliferation of various cancer cells and tumor growth in animal models. Epidemiologic data suggested that flavonoids consumption may protect against cancer induction in several human tissues. Chemoprevention has the potential to be a major component of cervical, colon, lung, prostate and bladder cancer control. Several of polyphenolic compounds regulate the genes that are critical for the control of proliferation, cell cycle and apoptosis pathway in cancer cells. Recently it has been reported that flavonoids sensitized cancer cells to apoptosis induced by anticancer agents in vitro, for example the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) family members. DRUGS UPDATES FDA Approves Juluca (dolutegravir and rilpivirine) for the Maintenance Treatment of Virologically Suppressed HIV-1 Infection:(21 st November, 2017) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Juluca, the first complete treatment regimen 11

containing only two drugs to treat certain adults with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) instead of three or more drugs included in standard HIV treatment. Juluca is a fixed-dose tablet containing two previously approved drugs (dolutegravir and rilpivirine) to treat adults with HIV-1 infections whose virus is currently suppressed on a stable regimen for at least six months, with no history of treatment failure and no known substitutions associated with resistance to the individual components of Juluca. Limiting the number of drugs in any HIV treatment regimen can help reduce toxicity for patients, said Debra Birnkrant, M.D., director of the Division of Antiviral Products in the FDA s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
