3 Institute Goals and Overview By the time this Institute takes place, DSM-5 will have gone to press. This Institute updates participants about the possible treatment impact of DSM-5 proposed criteria changes, as well as several newly included and controversial conditions. Treatment impact extends beyond psychopharmacologic treatment for some conditions (e.g. posttraumatic stress disorder, suicidal behavior, and non-suicidal self-injury). Questions posed include: What do the latest data say about the balance of benefit to risk in using psychotropic medication, including second generation antipsychotics and stimulants, in symptomatic and non-symptomatic children with diagnoses of autism spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, or children at risk for schizophrenia? What is the role of new non-stimulant treatment in ADHD, such as biofeedback, mindfulness training, and other alternative therapies? A re there any promising interventions, medical or non-medical, for ADHD, autism, and Tourette s Disorder coming down the pike? What impact will the diagnosis and criteria changes proposed for DSM-5 have on treatment of conditions like ADHD, posttraumatic stress disorder, and autism? At the conclusion of this continuing medical education activity, the participant will be able to: Are there important differences among diagnoses that address rage outbursts, mood dysregulation, and juvenile bipolar disorder and does it matter in the long run? 1. Describe criteria changes from DSM-5 in well-known disorders as well as describing several new conditions that will be included in DSM S ummarize the medications and evidence base for medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents but also describe treatments for complex cases that go beyond the evidence base. 3. E numerate circumstances in which children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders may not show a good response to treatment with evidence-based psychotropics and describe alternative ways of managing them. 4. Explain when it is appropriate to treat psychiatric disorders of children and adolescents with more than one psychotropic medication, which combinations are approved by the FDA, and whether the side effects of two different medications actually offset each other s risks or not. This Institute is designed for child and adolescent psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals with an interest in child and adolescent psychopharmacology and child mental health. What do we know about treatment of conditions like non-suicidal self-injury and obsessive compulsive-related disorders?
