2 HELLO SHIPMATES: Well, it s almost time for our next reunion and this will be the last Scuttlebutt before the reunion. The reunion will be held in Portland, ME during the week of September 25 th thru September the 27 th of 2018 with checkout on the 28 th. We will be staying at the Clarion Hotel at 1230 Congress St. The reservations can be made by calling , telling them you are with the BIBB Shipmates Association. The cost of the rooms will be $ plus prevailing city and state taxes. Currently, taxes are at 9%. These prices are quoted for single to quad occupancy. The cost of the room includes breakfast each morning. If you opt out of the breakfast, then $10.00 will be taken off your nightly stay. I was told this is a hot breakfast. ACTIVITY FEE: Dinner and activity room charge of $55.00 per person for paid members and families, and $70.00 per person for nonmembers. This charge is what used to be called an activity fee and never seemed to cover any activities. The outside trips or activities will be extra per cost of each activity. The Association does not make any money on these outside activities. The dinner and activity room charge is due no later than August 1 st so we can notify the hotel of the final dinner count and pay the deposit by August 15 th. Trips: We are looking at a harbor boat trip and will let you know. We are also working on a few other things. With this trip, is another reason we need a head count by the 15 th of August. We think (board members) that we should be able to pay for this harbor trip with our dues money. Any non-members will be charged for this trip at cost. Dinner: We will have our dinner in house again this year. There will be three or four things to pick from. This will be a buffet style. One of the reasons we thought in house is better because some of us aren t able to get around very well.

3 DUES: JUST A REMINDER THAT 2018 DUES WERE DUE ON FEBRUARY 15TH. Dues List: Paid up members = 42 Late pay/not paid = 46 Life members = members = 5 Axillary members not paid = 2 Total 110 members PLAQUE: Well, Bob has finally found a place for our plaque. He has been in touch with the Coast Guard Heritage Museum in Barnstable, Massachusetts and they are going to display it alongside some other BIBB pictures. We have given Jimmy Tweed a contact name and he is going to deliver the plaque to them. USCGC TANEY: We recently donated $500 toward the painting of her bottom. This was done through a gofundme campaign. Greetings CGC BIBB Shipmates from the USCGC TANEY in Baltimore! Thanks so much for your tremendous donation! Every day aboard TANEY we remember our sister ships and the men that sailed them for the benefit of the general public and so your donation will do much to keep the memory of the CGC BIBB (WHEC/WPG 31) alive and strong in Baltimore! All the best, Paul Cora UNDER THE WEATHER: 1. Dick Lake was hospitalized a few weeks ago, but he s home know recuperating nicely. 2. David Horton is under the weather at home and is on a waiting list for an operation at Massachusetts General.

4 We sent them a get well card from the BIBB Shipmates Association. COSSED THE BAR: Ronald G. Eastman, Ron age 90, of South Wellfleet and Stoughton, MA, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 4th, 2018 at the Pleasant Bay Nursing Home in Brewster, MA. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Dorothy Blood Eastman, and his brother, Berkeley Eastman. He married Dorothy Blood in CDR Ronald Eastman was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He served with distinction for 24 years in the US Coast Guard earning numerous medals including the Commendation Medal with Combat V". After retirement from the USCG, he became the General Manager of the Woods Hole Steamship Authority, and during his tenure oversaw construction of the Nantucket Island Terminal building. In retirement, he worked as assistant harbormaster in Wellfleet, MA. Commander Eastman was a proud veteran and loved his country. More than 18 of his 24 years of military service were at sea as an engineer which required deployment away from home and family for many months at a time. Having sailed the seven seas literally and figuratively, he was the consummate sailor. He was born in an era of sail and steam and was the epitome of an Old Salt - the last of the breed from a time when ships were made of wood and men were made of steel. NEW MEMBERS: 1. Alan Clifton 2. Ronald Churchill 3. Robert Penny CHRIS MALINGER: He was on the BIBB in 1965 and volunteered for Squadron One in Vietnam. He wrote a book about a young Coastie and his experience in that war. This book is Called "The Unattended War". We are hoping we can get a couple copies of the book donated from him to sell at our reunion.

5 A MESSAGE FROM RICH RADLE: Ahoy Lads I hope this newsletter finds you all in good health and good spirits. We are looking forward to seeing you all at our upcoming get-together in Portland. I suggested to Lloyd and Jake that we explore creating two more BIBB plaques in addition to the one we have to be placed in the Coast Guard Heritage Museum. Upon contacting Paul Cora of the Taney (in Baltimore) and Bill Verge of the Ingram (in Key West) of their interest in displaying a BIBB commemorative piece. Lloyd has informed me he is going to bring this up at our business meeting. I addition, Lloyd and I have discussed voting at our meeting as to the next reunion location, as we have done in years past. If you have any destinations in mind, please bring any information, details and ideas to the meeting. I want to take a moment to remember Commander Ronald Eastman. He was a fine gentleman and leader.
