Rotary Club of Regina Eastview The ROTOR ` Service Above Self Friday, June 26, 2015 Club Web Site Editor: Peter Peters mppeters@sasktel.net If you have any comments or questions, the editor. Jul 2 My Life in Morocco with Mounir Bouchaibi Jul 9 NO MEETING in favour of Golf Tournament on July 10 Jul 10 Golf Tournament & Dinner at Tor Hill - Jul 16 District Governor s Official Visit with DG Ken & Donna Krebs Jul 23 Co-housing - Prairie Spruce Commons with Dave Lareau Jul 30 TBA NEXT MEETING My Life in Morocco with Mounir Bouchaibi July 2, 2015 DUTY ROSTER Registration: Jeanne Martinson 50/50: Leif Riesach Greeter: Mounir Bouchaibi On the evening of Friday, June 26, th Regina Eastview celebrated the combined President s Social and Changeover where we, along with the Rotary world, shifted from a year of Light Up Rotary to the challenge to Be A Gift to the World. This in Regina Eastview means we will move from a year under the Presidency and leadership of Doreen Pankewich to a year where President Ron Okumura is in charge of the agenda. While it was obvious that many of our members had conflicting engagements, those who chose to join the celebration enjoyed the finest of fellowship, quality musical entertainment, a classy Delta Regina sit down multicourse meal where the closure of one chapter was honoured and the incoming chapter was welcomed. It was all good. The evening s unfolding s are in part captured in the following pages.
It was great to have welcoming us at the Registration Desk, Past President Gail Bradley looking pretty perky for someone swinging a walking cane, and veteran Past President Allen Smith, who was re-introducing Gail to the complexities of this station (like this is something one could ever forget). Welcome back, Gail! In Regina Eastview these kind of celebrations are the responsibility of Club Service Committee. This being the case, Co-Chair of Club Service, John Van Koll, was the evening s MC ensuring the agenda was followed for the benefit of all participants. It was wonderful to have President Doreen and Albert s sons and daughters-in-law at this celebration. Pictured below is the Pankewich family. (L to R) Son Kerry and his wife Rona; you recognize Doreen and Albert; next is daughter-in-law Corinne and son Trevor. As we dined around our tables of 4 or 6, some with beautiful flowers in vases, some with fine vases, we were entertained by music and voice stylings of Jazz Pianist Arnie Davis. Remember the Lyle Piett Memorial Golf Tournament and Dinner at Tor Hill Golf Course on Friday, July 10, Some details in last week s ROTOR. For information on registration and costs, please contact John Van Koll for details. Dinner will follow Golf also at Tor Hill. See you there! REMINDER there is a CALL FOR GOLF PRIZES Members are asked to approach their contacts, business acquaintances, friends and associates for prizes for the Club s Annual Golf Tournament. Should you wish to donate money the Committee will turn these resources into prizes.
In addition to Eastviewians and a fine group of spouses, we were pleased to have Rotarian Al and Francis Goudie, RC of Regina, (who, if you look close, are included in the picture opposite) join our celebration. In keeping with established tradition (which may well one day come to an end), President Doreen was Roasted/Toasted by Doug Mortin, Peter Peters and Peter Neufeldt. As in other years the audience applauded at the right time. Once the roasting and toasting was complete the celebration moved in to the Changeover components. Doreen was called to the podium, thus being provided with opportunity to talk about the year that was. In her comments Doreen drew attention to three awards Regina Eastview received at the District Conference. These included Presidential Citation; Zone Literacy Award; and, PolioPlus Award. Doug Mortin did a fine Foster Brooks impersonation which caused some in the audience to question his sobriety; Peter Peters told a story about a donkey in a well and solicited complimentary comparisons, which did confuse attendees who are not accustomed to such challenges after 8 P.M.; and, Peter Neufeldt got down on one knee beside his cousin, and begged her forgiveness before he got started. She also took opportunity to complete an unfulfilled item she wished to pass on to her Rotary family, it was the Rotary clap. One demonstration later we picked up the clap. Her year is complete! MC John presented President Doreen with a bouquet of flowers and a gift bag of very nice things including a card it is guessed the card expressed the members thanks and congratulations for leading us through a memorable year.
Then came the changing of pins, during which President Doreen presented her successor with a bundle of items which she felt would serve Ron well in the coming year as he copes with the challenges of leading the delightful (editorial interpretation) Eastviewians. President Elect Ron, in expressing his appreciation for the opportunity to serve as President, again thanked members for making it possible for he and Mary to attend the Rotary International Convention in Brazil. He shared initial impressions of this highlight adventure and indicated that we will get an expanded introduction in the coming weeks. President Elect Ron introduced his Leadership Team and called to the platform those present. This included: (l to r) Ron Okumura, President; Greg McNamara, President Elect; Allen Hillsden, Secretary; Wally Dressler, Treasurer; Mounir Bouchaibi, Director Club Service and Doreen Pankewich, Past President. Missing were Lyle Gollnick, Community Service; Jeanne Martinson, Director Vocational Service; Richard Schwan, Director International Service; Louis Browne, Chair of Membership; and, John Van Koll, Chair of Public Relations President Doreen had opportunity to present and thank her Leadership Team which consisted of Ron, President Elect; John Van Koll, Co-Chair of Club Service; Cindy Tycholis, Treasurer; Allen Hillsden, Secretary; and, Greg McNamara, Vice President. Not present for the photo were Richard Schwan, International Service; Jeanne Martinson, Vocational Service; Sherry McKinnon, Community Service; and, Louis Browne, Membership Chair.
Present to receive 100% attendance rewards were Gary Carlson (32 years); Allen Hillsden (12 years); Peter Neufeldt (3 years); Doug Mortin (17 years); and, Peter Peters (26 years). CRCID s David Kennedy Award PDG Peter Peters honored by CRCID during the Governor s Banquet at the 2015 District 5550 Conference in Nipawin, SK, June 20, As a concluding item to this evening s celebration, PDG Doug Mortin, Vice President of CRCID (Canadian Rotary Collaboration for International Development), was invited to re-present an Award he presented at the District Conference in Nipawin on behalf of CRCID. Following is a summary of Doug s comments. PDG Peter Peters was appointed District 5550 Representative to Canadian Rotary Collaboration for International Development (CRCID) by Governor Cam King. At the CRCID AGM, October 25, 2009, then Rotary International Director (RID) for Zone 24, Monty Audenart, appointed Peter President of CRCID, where he served until his retirement from CRCID on September 22, Peter s term of 5 years was fraught with many difficult decisions, due to situations well out of his control. Each one however, was made with the integrity, selflessness, grace and just the right amount of humor that we have all come to associate with Peter Peters (right - with DG Pat Chernesky). During times of greater stability, CRCID honored outgoing Presidents at their final AGM in the company of CRCID colleagues. However, recent fiscal restraints necessitated Board and AGM meetings taking the form of conference calls which have robbed us of the opportunity to look Peter in the eye and express our deep gratitude for his 9 years of great service to CRCID & Rotary. At the 2015 District Conference, CRCID authorized presentation to him of the David Kennedy Award, named after its founder. The award is presented periodically to outstanding Rotarians who have provided exemplary service to CRCID and Rotary during their tenure with CRCID.
Current Rotary International Director Bryn Styles, shared the following comments about Peter which were shared during the presentation: The David Kennedy Award recognizes Peter's tremendous contribution to CRCID. He led CRCID through a time of great change on many fronts. Of course with the government but also with Rotary and the Rotary Foundation. Peter realized early on that the rules were changing and we needed to adapt. You know of his leadership style - calm, reflective with a strong dose of humour. I first met Peter at the first Zone Institute I attended in 2002 in Edmonton. I was struck by his honesty & integrity. We became friends from that first meeting. If you could convey to the audience the deep respect that Peter has throughout the Zone it would be appreciated. Congratulations, Peter from all of us at your Home Club, the Rotary Club of Regina Eastview! To see more on this Award presentation please visit the CRCID Website at: Ladies and Gentlemen, that is enough about me. Have a great week. For the Regina Eastview ROTOR I am Peter Peters
