2 A Message from our Chairman and Founder In the early months of 2015, I received life altering news that I needed a liver transplant. While I was quickly added to the transplant waitlist, I soon realized that I was facing an uphill battle, especially because of my rare blood type. For months my close friends and family were tested to see if someone was compatible for a live liver donation. But time was not on my side, and the situation became dire. Doctors told me I had weeks to live, if that. I m a private person with two young daughters, and like every father, I live for them. At their urging, I took my plea for an organ donor public. We were overwhelmed with the response. Within a week or so, a suitable match was found and we were both in surgery under the care of the brilliant doctors and nurses at the University Health Network in Toronto. To this day, I do not know the identity of my donor, which speaks volumes about his or her selflessness. All he or she asked, is that I do everything in my power for the Sens to bring home the Stanley Cup. And I m working on that. After my transplant, my life took on new meaning. Not only was my life saved, but several other people waiting for transplants also received organs from individuals who had called in to help me. I have a responsibility to give back. I have and will continue to help those in the same and similar situation. I will work to honour the lives of organ donors, alive and deceased, their families, and organ recipients. This is personal for me. our support and friendship in launching the Organ Project is personal for me. The work of the doctors, nurses, researchers, and caregivers is personal for me. This Gala is personal for me. So, thank you for your support. Thank you for standing up and doing your part to help end the waitlist that truly matters. This is solvable. We can drastically reduce the number of people - babies, kids, dads and mums - who die every year waiting for an organ. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Carpe Diem. Eugene

3 The Organ Project Life is full of waiting. For a latte, for a taxi, for a flight, to get into a club. We complain, and we look for shortcuts, but eventually the wait is over and we move on to the next thing. But for thousands of people waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, that wait never ends, and it costs them their life. At the Organ Project, we are going to change that. We are working to end the waitlist that really matters. We ll do that by generating awareness about organ donation and encouraging conversations among family members. We want to bring the conversation around organ donation out of the shadows so that when it s time for a family to make the decision, it can be made with confidence, respecting the wishes of their loved one. B THE NUMBERS More than 4, 600 Canadians are on the wait list for a life-saving organ transplant. In some cases however, patients who could benefit from transplant don t even make the waitlist. For example, of the more than 35,000 patients receiving dialysis for renal disease, only around 10 per cent make it to the kidney transplant waitlist. Canadians are five to six times more likely to need an organ transplant than to become a deceased organ donor. 5 people die a week waiting for a life-saving organ transplant in Canada. Canada s deceased donor rate is less than half of that of the best performing countries and has remained basically flat for the last decade. Over 60% of potential organ donations are blocked by family members.

The evening will host some of Canada s top business influencers, politicians, and philanthropists alike. The entertainment will be first class, but the true stars of the evening will be our donors, recipients, and donor families.
