Funeral services for Mrs. Leonard were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 16 from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Lawler, with the Rev. John Moran officiating. Burial was at the Mount Carmel Cemetery and Larkin-Martin Funeral Service had charge of arrangements. Nell Keegan was born April 8, 1881 at Lawler, the daughter of Michael E. and Bridgett Falare Keegan. She attended schools of the county. Donald was born September 20, 1909, the son of Raymond and Nell (Keegan) Leonard in Decorah. He lived his entire life in Lawler. On September 28, 1931, he was united in marriage to Marie Anna Kennedy. He was a barber for over 30 years and was a representative for Life Investors Insurance until his retirement. Chick organized and started the first Little League baseball program in Lawler, was on the Building Committee for the present church, and a member of Lawler School Board for many years. Survivors include his wife, Marie; two sons: Tom, Lawler, and Mike, Minneapolis; three daughters: Eileen Rahr, Chicago, Donna Luebbers, Allison, and Maureen Franck, Lutz, Florida: 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren: and a sister, Eileen Heyd, New Hampton. Visitation was held on Thursday at Larkin-Martin Funeral Home in Lawler with a Rosary at 4 p.m. and Parish Scripture at 7:30 p.m." ================================================================================== Dad was born on September 20th At age nine months, his father, Raymond Leonard, abandoned him, his sister Eileen, who was three years older, and his wife, Nellie. Life was difficult from then on. Dad had no father to look up to for guidance or support. No father to watch him play baseball or basketball. No father to encourage, guide or advise him. He had been abandoned and carried all the baggage associated with that treachery. By age six Dad began shining shoes at the Lawler barber shop. As he got older he took on other jobs to make money to help support his family. As a teenager he continued working at the barber shop learning the skills of a barber and began that work. Dad graduated from the Lawler High School in 1929 and that same year purchased the barber shop from Paul Liscum. In 1931, dad married Anna Marie Kennedy, a New Hampton, Iowa High School graduate and together they raised five children. In the 1950s dad sold the barber shop and began working for the Life Investors insurance company of Iowa. He retired from that business twenty years later. During his life, dad was very supportive in family activities. He started and coached the first Little League baseball team in Lawler. He coached or was always there for the basketball or baseball games or to support his family in whatever school function there was. He took us hunting and fishing and saw to it that we had the things we needed. Unlike his father who was never there for him, he was there for us. Miss Marie Kennedy of New Hampton and Mr. Donald Leonard of Lawler were married at a nuptial mass in St. Joseph's church of this city, Monday morning, September 28, 1921 (1931) at 9 o'clock. The services were performed by the very Reverend T. J. Dowling in the presence of many relatives and close friends. The bridal pair was attended by Miss Bernice Kennedy, sister of the bride, and Mr. Kenneth Goheen, friend of the bridegroom. The bride wore a white satin dress with wreath and veil, and all accessories to match and a shower bouquet of lilies. Her maid wore pink chiffon with hat to match. Immediately after the sacred church ceremony, the bride's parents invited twenty-four of the near relatives to a wedding breakfast and festivities in the private dining room of the Miller hotel. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Kennedy of New Hampton. She is an excellent young lady, reared in a good home, educated in rural and in New Hampton schools. She graduated from the New Hampton Public High School in the class of Since then she has been a successful teacher in the rural schools of this county. She is a fine, capable young woman, able to do her full share in bringing comfort and happiness to the home of the man she has chosen to honor with her hand. The bridegroom is a son of Mrs. Nell Leonard of Lawler. He has been reared by a good mother, educated in the Lawler schools, graduated from the Lawler High School in the class of 1929 and has followed barbering as an occupation. He appears to be a splendid young man, able to bring success to the home of the lady of his choice. They have gone on a wedding trip to points in Missouri and other places and after October 15th will be at home to their friends in Lawler, Iowa. Page 5 of November 2007
