4 Obituary Marilyn Elaine Hallman was born March 22, 1954 in Tulsa, OK. She passed away May 6, 2013 after suffering a stroke. She was raised by her uncle and aunt Leslie Bessie Arterberry in Buttonwillow, where she spent summers picking cotton. She was active in 4-H and an excellent student throughout grade and high school. Even as a child Marilyn appreciated her close knit family, playing with her cousins at Cousin s Creek in Buttonwillow, and spending time with them in Los Angeles and Oklahoma. At Shafter High School she served as Homecoming Queen and Drum Major in the marching band. A lifelong Christian, Marilyn was a devoted member of St. Paul Church where she served in several leadership roles. Last year she acknowledged her call to minister and gave her first sermon in December. She was considered The Voice of St. Paul for her weekly recording of church announcements and was an integral part in many other church activities. In 1973 she married Tommy Joe Hallman of Shafter, Ca. and together they had three wonderful children. They were married for 19 years. Marilyn was a devoted mother to her three children. Throughout their life she served as their strongest role model and spiritual compass, even into adulthood. She was elated to welcome her first grandchild, Mia, in January of this year, whom she immediately began to spoil. Seeing the world was Marilyn s great passion. Her lifelong love affair with travel began when she spent a year abroad in Sweden as an exchange student in high school. She traveled extensively across the United States and visited many countries around the world including Egypt, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Russia and Sweden. She was in the midst of planning a trip to Pamplona, Spain to see the Running of the Bulls when she passed. Marilyn received her Bachelors Degree from California State University Bakersfield. She worked as an administrator for the Kern County Department of Public Health and recently began working on homeland security and emergency preparedness projects, and she relished the opportunity to take on new roles in her professional career. Throughout the years Marilyn was active in several Boards including the Human Relations Commission, Henrietta Weill Memorial Child Guidance Clinic and the CSUB Alumni Association, where she chaired the Scholarship Committee. Marilyn was a dedicated LA Dodgers fan, loved going to the rodeo, playing dominoes and visiting spas and Central California s beaches. She is survived by her three children: Lesly Simmons of San Francisco, (husband Jole), Jillian Hallman of Los Angeles, and Thomas Hallman of Shafter; one granddaughter, Mia Simmons of San Francisco; father Garnett Burkhalter of Tulsa, OK and sister Melodi Lovely of Baltimore, MD. She is preceded in passing by her mother Betty Williams of Tulsa, OK, aunt Bessie Arterberry-Wherry of Buttonwillow, and sister Sheila Howlett of Bakersfield.
