2 Reflections of Life In God s garden there are some flowers that stand taller; more erect, more noticeable, and more beautiful than others around them. Their qualities make them shine brightly. Marie Leigh was one of those flowers. Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die; that where I am there may you be also. Marie Bernie Leigh passed away peacefully on September 24, She was the daughter of the late Virginia Parker and Ernest McClain. Marie was born in New York, New York. She moved to Albany, New York at an early age. Upon arriving in Albany, she joined the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church under the direction of Moses Hunter. Marie was educated in the Albany, New York public school system. She furthered her education by earning an Associate Degree from Hudson Valley Community College in In 1977, Marie and her husband, Tinky, opened Leigh s Variety Store on the corner of Livingston Avenue and North Pearl Street in Albany, New York. The store afforded her an opportunity to engage the community in a very special way and demonstrate her love for residents and especially the youth of Ida Yarborough Homes. After twenty years of service, she retired from the New York State Department of Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Unit. In 1964, Marie married the love of her life, her childhood sweetheart, Charles Tinky Leigh. From that union four children were born: Sherrell, Charlie, Carla, and Dev. The joy of Marie s life was her children and her grandchildren; oh how she loved her grandchildren. Marie had a special bond with her first great-granddaughter, Emani LaShay. In 1995, Marie turned her life over to Christ and joined the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church; where she attended faithfully with her children and grandchildren. She was a very soft spoken lady who loved to sing and was a member of the Chorusters. Marie loved God and she found joy in family gatherings. Marie was a prayer warrior and loved to pray over and with her family. In 2005, Marie became a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church where she was a devoted member until she relocated to Atlanta Georgia. In 2008, after Look for me in Rainbows Time for me to go now, I won t say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, way up in the sky. In the morning sunrise when all the world is new, Just look for me and love me, as you know I loved you. Time for me to leave you, I won t say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, high up in the sky. In the evening sunset, when all the world is through, Just look for me and love me, and I ll be close to you. It won t be forever, the day will come and then My loving arms will hold you, when we meet again. Time for us to part now, we won t say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, shining in the sky. Every waking moment, and all your whole life through Just look for me and love me, as you know I loved you. Just wish me to be near you, And I ll be there with you. 3 I'm Free Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free, I'm following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I've found that peace at the close of lthe day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My Life's been full, I savoured much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch, Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free. Reflections of Life her relocation to Atlanta, Georgia, Marie joined Beulah Missionary Baptist Church under the direction of Pastor Jerry Black, whom she loved. She was a faithful member at Beulah Missionary Baptist Church; she joined and sang with the Jerry Black Choir. In Atlanta, she resided with her son Charles, Jr. Charles, Jr. who loved his mother. They had a special bond which was easily recognizable and unbreakable. Charlie, Jr. worshiped and praised his mother. He put her on the highest pedestal giving her his very best in all he did for her. Among her many achievements, Marie fulfilled her bucket list appearing in May 2013 on the nationally syndicated TV show, Family Feud, and in June 2015 was featured in NFL Films Production, Charlie s Comet, in honor of her beloved Charles Tinky Leigh. Marie leaves to mourn her passing, four children, Sherrell, Charles, Jr., Carla, and Deverren, Sr. Leigh (Honey Bee), all of Atlanta, Georgia; eleven grandchildren, DayQuana (Greg), Ashayia, Shareiff, Shardayia, Charles, III, A Jaye, Kaywon, I india, C-ality, Zephaniah, and Deverren, Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Emani LaShay and Hailey Marie; sister, Barbara Watson of Rochester, New York; uncle, Dillard Parker of Albany, New York; special mom to Leroy Pressley who was more than a godson, but was a dedicated caregiver, her spiritual friend, and a trusted confidant; godmother to Tina Samuels, Vondell McCall, and Cyrus Green; a special sisterly bond with Louise Black Daughterly; bond with Ruby Ragsdale; three brothers-in-law, Anthony Leigh of Orlando, Florida, Alfred Leigh, and Thomas Willingham, Sr., all of Albany, New York; three sisters-inlaw, Dorothy Leigh of Seattle, Washington, Earlene and Doris Leigh of Albany, New York; and a special thanks to her nursing aide, Cynthia Marshall and Chaplain Johnny Porter. Marie is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Loved ones waiting to meet her at the pearly gates her beloved mother Virginia and her husband Charles Tinky Leigh.
