What it feels like to have PRRS on your farm Dr. Carlo Lasagna Martini S.p.A. Italy

Agenda Introduction: the battlefield, the pigs, the viruses Disease impact: from psychology to economy passing through veterinary science Disease control: some field data Biosecurity: let science guide us Conclusions:

Introduction The battlefield Lombardia (Milan area): 50% of the pigs into 5% territory 4,5 milion pigs in an area smaller than Slovenia Pig Industry Only 20% is integrated >> many pig owners The viruses Highly variable strains (Forsberg et al 2002, Mang et al 2010, Stadejek et al, 2013)

How do you feel after the phone call: I think I got PRRS once again Asking questions to identify the lack of one or more symptoms But in the depths of your mind you know it s it!! Collecting samples > Diagnostic Lab > Confirmation Report > Sequence > homologous or heterologous? Homologous: failure in gilts adaptation or in health strategy > probably smaller problem but it s your mistake?! Heterologous: biosecurity failure > it s his (farm) mistake but it could be a big problem!!

Wikipedia: DEFINITELY PRRS IS FRUSTRATING! In psychology, frustration is a common emotional response to opposition. Related to anger and disappointment, it arises from the perceived resistance to the fulfillment of individual will. External causes of frustration involve conditions outside an individual, such as a blocked road or a difficult task.

DAILY INFO DURING OUTBREAK Daily call (you know you have to /should call but it is not the best way to start the day) From his voice you perceive he needs some optimistic words from you You have just implemented so many actions, management changes

And you may ask yourself, how do I work this? Talking heads - Once in a lifetime George Clooney - Nespresso

Johnson, North American Prrs Symposium 2013 maintaning a PRRSV antibody seropositive status results in more value generation than PRRSV eradication on a BTW farm that experiences a novel PRRSV outbreak more frequently than one every three years

BIOSECURITY IMPORTANCE Wikipedia The original definition of biosecurity started out as a set of preventive measures designed to reduce the risk of transmission of infectious diseases in crops and livestock. Live pigs, 157 days in tonsils (Zimmermann et al 1997) Semen (Christofer-Hennings et al 1995; Reicks et al 2006) Trucks, fomites and personnel (Dee et al ) Airborne (Pitkin et al 2009; Otake et al 2009)

AIR FILTRATION FIELD STUDY (Dee et al, Viruses 2012) The way we built pig farms makes this impossible to do!

Research: immunity / finishing vaccination Therapeutic Vaccination 2 doses: 7 and 37 days post infection (Cano et al 2007, Linhares et al 2012) Prophylactic Vaccination 1 dose / infection 4 weeks later (Dee et al, 2014) CONT. VACC. N days pos. air samples 31/120 17/120 Viral excretion duration CONT. VACC. N days pos. air samples 21/118 4/118 Viral excretion duration 36 6

AREA REGIONAL CONTROL IS TOO MUCH? MAY BE AREA INCREASED IMMUNITY

Conclusions Present Frustration Location and/or Low Biosecurity = more than one strain in a herd Fix how to manage an outbreak is a must! Tomorrow Plan ARC is a big world / word Think about Area Increased Immunity Future Hope Improved vaccines are welcome

It s easier to act our way into a new way of thinking, than to think our way into a new way of acting. Jerry Sternin The power of Positive Deviance
