1 Sunterra/Sunwold History How the Hell did We get PED in? 197 as PIC by the Price family, Howard Fredeen, Ken Woolley and Jack Greenway Sunterra, Sold the breeding stock rights to PIC Intl. 3 sows - Alberta (Sunterra Farms) Boar Stud Alberta (Genetic Alliance) 43 Sows Alberta (Sunwold Farms) 56 sows - Ontario (Sunwold Farms) 9 Farm Employees Contract Management, marketing close to 1,, pigs year in the US Sunterra/Sunwold History 199 processing plant in Alberta (Sunterra Meats) 199 opened first retail store, now 19 retail locations in Alberta 12 plant employees 7 store employees Company has over 95 employees Starting a new venture Soleterra, Salami & Prosciutto. Call from farm on Sunday May 15 th, farrowing rooms with some scour Call Monday morning May 16 th, 216 All farrowing rooms scouring Tests taken and sent to Lab that day 5.21 pm PED positive! Plan Expose all sows Load up on gilts 4 months Create a farrowing gap 2 weeks Clean the farm up, wash, wash & wash! Big focus on biosecurity, especially internal. May 17 th 2 th All sows exposed twice All pigs weaned down to 1 days (>8 days suckled) Weaned into farrowing crates All younger euthanized <7 days Created a 2 week farrowing gap July 23 rd loaded up on gilts 1

2 Need to stop moving virus around Need continued focus & monitoring! Very tight internal biosecurity between farrowing & gestation. Lime over all floors in farrowing and boot areas. May 26 th Last PED+ weaned pigs left (12 days later!) During May 21 st to June 3 rd all farrowing WDD, Prevail, white glove inspection Farrowing split into 2 phase s All sows washed and prevailed at loading First sows farrowed June 1 st (6 days after PED+ pigs left from those rooms) Phase 2 started farrowing June 2 th Shower, clean boots & coveralls if entering phase 2. McREBEL Very tight McREBEL (Management changes to Reduce Exposure to Bacteria to Eliminate Losses) Very frustrating for staff All small, weak newborns euthanized No fostering after 24 hours No stepping in crates Minimal pig handling, no processing carts! June 6 th to 1 th washed & Prevailed all sows & gestation June 22 nd 1 st pigs weaned from Phase 1 2

3 Testing Numerus sow site testing to ensure focus on cleanup Downstream testing on 1 st weaned pigs Pigs farrowed 6 days after PED+ pigs left and.. NEGATIVE! We got lucky here! July 4 th to July 8 th Washed and Prevailed all gestation 2 nd time Continued downstream testing, all negative July 13 th washed and prevailed Isolation. Investigation on how it arrived into the barn looking back Monday 9 th May loaded out sows & piglets, multiple shuttles Wednesday May 11 th some scouring sows & off feed, we have had this in the past so no big flag at the time, some history of Ileitis/Salmonella May 12 th to 13 th a few more scouring sows & off feed Investigation on how it arrived into the barn looking back Cull sows running on & off the truck at loading in the ramp Loadout not always washed after loading & before staff enter back into the barn Changes in biosecurity Street shoe change at Entry Entrance barriers and lime Lunch pass through Mortality removals relocated New entrance/protocol for supplies No shuttle bus Always had positive pressure loadout Constructing a driver transfer platform 3
