1 Fall 2018 Newsletter The Alberta Cultural Society of the Deaf continues to promote a positive image of Deaf people, their culture and their heritage, through upcoming events in the fall of With a busy fall season, we have many events that we are hosting or sponsoring. ACSD would like to thank the coordinators and instructors who have made another year of ASL Immersion a great success. Both Edmonton and Calgary hosted Immersions this year and both were well attended by a total of over 100 individuals wanting to learn more about ASL and Deaf Culture. Thanks to all who attended and hope to see more faces next summer! We are proud to continue sponsoring the Deaf Alberta Expo in Edmonton this year. Our focus for the expo this year is to introduce DeVIA to the Alberta community. Paul Johnson, who has many years of unique Arts experience, will be presenting on what DeVIA means and how Deaf people can express the common experiences we share through various types of art. This will be a once in a lifetime experience, so be sure to schedule time for the DeVIA workshop. ACSD is busy at work on our history project. The hard working duo, Dena Ruiter- Koopmans and Rebecca Lehman, are working on identifying people from pictures found in our archives. Check out their flyer with the latest Guess Who, What, Where? picture! We continue to bring quality film experiences to the Alberta community. We had our first Movie in the Park in Calgary last Aug 18 th at the Rise of St.Patrick's Island in downtown Calgary. We watched Hedy and Heidi: The Lost Sister on a giant inflatable screen outdoors while sitting on a hill. It was a success with many people 1

2 enjoying themselves, even though it was a smoky and chilly evening due to the forest fires in BC. We will bring the same movie to Edmonton this fall. As the weather gets colder, we will show the movie indoors for Edmontonians in North Alberta. Stay posted to our website for an announcement for the date of the movie. As Deaf identity is important to us, we are excited to introduce a flag developed by Arnauld Balard. A Deafblind artist, he wanted to develop a flag that would unify all deaf people across the world and enable us to be proud of who we are as a people. Accepted as an official flag at the WFD, ACSD is proud to share the Deaf Union flag with our community! Be sure to research more about Arnauld Balard as his story is fascinating. The annual International Week of the Deaf will have a special event this year hosted by the Canadian Association of the Deaf, where the community will come together and rally for our shared Deaf concerns. Be sure to come and show your support! The Canadian Federal Government has announced a new bill before Parliament called Accessible Canada Act. It is very fascinating and brings new policies on Disability access across Canada. Please watch the video. Copy and paste this address or search Accessible Canada Act online. This workshop is limited to 50 participants, and is now sold out! 2) De VIA History Workshop with Paul Johnson on Saturday September 15 from 9 am to 10 am. Sponsored by the Edmonton Arts Council & The City of Edmonton Biography: Dr. Paul Johnston was born deaf to hearing parents who did not use sign language or become familiar with deaf culture. For 32 years Dr. Johnston taught at Gallaudet University. For most of that time he was a member of the art department. He was also a founding member of De VIA (an acronym for Deaf View Image Art). This group of artists and scholars set a framework for how to discuss and generate art based on Deaf experiences. In an experimental design class at Penn State, Dr. Johnston taught the same concept to hearing students and empowered them to translate their hearing access into art. Dr. Johnston has been a frequent lecturer, exhibition juror, moderator and guest artist at venues in the U.S. and Europe. In 2011, he was artist-in-residence at Siena Art Institute in Siena, Italy. 3

5 In Loving Memory of Julie Martin It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Julie Martin. She attended schools for the Deaf in Wisconsin, Milton and Vancouver. She graduated with Bachelor of Arts degree in ASL and Master in Education from Gallaudet University, She taught ASL for more than 20 years. Julie was a featured poet in the DVD The Selected Works of Clayton Valli. Her passion for enhancing professionalism in ASL instruction was the reason why she was on the CCSD Board as the Sign Language Training & Evaluation Coordinator. She will be remembered with adoration and respect by ASL Instructors and Deaf community. Our sympathy to Julie s family and Vincent Chauvet. Please see the video of Julie in John Warren s facebook. 7 ASL Immersion 2018 Edmonton, AB July 9 15, 2018 July 9-15, 2018, we were excited to host 87 ASL learners for our 14 th annual ASL Immersion held at Alberta School for the Deaf. 8 ASL Immersion 2018 Calgary, AB August 15 17, 2018 I just wanted to let you know the things you do for the Alberta Cultural Society of the Deaf do not go unnoticed. We had two successful ASL Immersion events in Alberta! One took place in Edmonton and the other in Calgary. As ASL Immersion Coordinator in 2018 Calgary (August 15-17, 2018), I learned that there were 25 students who enjoyed learning ASL very much for three days. I was so proud to say that the ASL Immersion Calgary went very smoothly and was so successful. I wanted to express thanks from the bottom of my heart to the ASL Instructors Crystal Wolfe, Liz Pollock and Emil Kvarnberg for your commitment. You are not only valued members of the team, but I can t imagine working without you all. I also wanted to thank Sandra Reid who volunteered through the months and during the three days in Calgary. Indeed, there was fun and laughter among ASL Instructors too. I won t forget Clark Archibald who so kindly took us around the city to find a restaurant and gave us helpful instructions on where to go. I also want thank to Victoria Meusel for her hard work with preparation and contacting registrants and many others. I do really appreciate your devotion to this work. I have not forgotten you, Rebecca Lehman, a super hero for booking Bow Valley College and making sure the classrooms were booked. Thanks Rebecca. In addition, my thanks to the Interpreters, Deb Flaig and Sue Grochmail. Thank you for your time. There are so many others to thank who donated items I thank you all!
