Especially with children, the days just fly by and we are left wondering where did the time go! With that said, I have a special request: there are positions available to be filled, both on Hands and Voices/Oregon and for the OSD Advisory Board. If you have interest in giving a bit of time to either of these two entities, I would be most grateful. 1) Hands and Voices serve Parents of Deaf children. Your presence there can make an impact in a big way! Especially Deaf parents of Deaf children H&V are very interested in having a representative who is Deaf themselves. Contact Helen Cotton-Leiser at helen@handsandvoicesor.org 2) Our own OSD Advisory Board the board meets very rarely, but we are grateful for its guiding force. They meet to write up an annual report, listen to various people giving updates on the progress of the school, and submit a 5-year master plan to the governor. If you have interest in serving as the parent of a Deaf child, or you are a Deaf adult, a Deaf business person in the community, or a person familiar with Deaf Education, there is a place for you! Fill out the application attached. Our current chair is Jonathan Myers. If you have questions regarding the board, contact him at jonathan.myers@osd.k12.or.us. Thanks in advance! 100 th Day of School By Michelle Hardy On Feb. 18 th the elementary department celebrated the 100th Day of School. We packed the day with fun activities that revolved around the number 100. We: brought in 100 items and made posters watched 100th Day stories read by SJ and RJ created TALL towers using 100 marshmallows and toothpicks Page 1

2 March 13, 2015 Bi-Weekly Newsletter Volume 3, Edition 9 wrote lists about 100 places we would like to visit, 100 compliments, 100 ways to make 100, and 100 reasons we LOVE OSD!! made 100th Day hats put together snacks by collecting ten of ten different food items (pretzels, cheerios, marshmallows, etc) made posters that show what we might look like at age 100 It was a great day! We would like to invite you to come over to the library and check out the display of our 100 year old photos--they are quite amusing! Plan to spend a few minutes looking at them. You will want to see them all. The ES Department Elementary Field Trip to OMSI By Michelle Hardy OMSI was awesome! Lots of terrific hands-on and challenging activities for our students. The students had a blast and learned so much. Next week, we will be celebrating the love of reading it s Read Across America time! There will be a book giveaway, our Pizza Hut reading reward lunch on Wednesday, and other special reading-related activities all week! 2015 Academic All-Stars By Statesman Journal education/2015/03/01/oregon-school-deafhunter-morelli/ / ES Students Pose for 100th Day of School Also, please feel free to add to our posters in that same area. We would love to have 100 things on each poster--how easy is it to list reasons we love OSD??? Please add your reasons. (Photo: Special to the Statesman Journal) Essay: One thing I would change about K-12 education to help young people be more successful is to have a more intensive approach in reading/writing skills. 3 March 13, 2015 Bi-Weekly Newsletter Volume 3, Edition 9 approach, Deaf students would have a hard time understanding what the real world is like, lack communication skills and have a hard time understanding what they need to do to meet today's demands. Having the intense approach in reading/writing skills also helps Deaf students to have the ability to improve their English and communication skills, which can be applied when competing in the job market. It also can apply to when you're applying for a specific job, independently be able to answer an employer's questions and communicate effectively. By Gayle Robertson The drama department is doing Shakespeare. Our play Kiss The Moon is an adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing. Our play is set in 1985, Messina School for the Deaf at Homecoming. We are putting it all together, but need your help! Please look in your closets. Way in the back. Do you still have acid wash jeans? Patched and painted jean jackets? Laced anklets? Neon leggings? Froo-froo mini skirts? Do you have banana clips? Lace gloves? Big hair scrunchies? A crimping iron? Do you have skinny ties? Button down shirts with tiny button down collars? Izod shirts? Converse high tops, Vans, Keds or Run DMC Adidas? Any clothes or accessories that you can find related to the 1980 s, please consider donating to the drama department at OSD! Just send them with your child or leave them at the front office labeled For Drama. And while you re at it, mark your calendars! Kiss the Moon opens May 11 and runs for 3 days. You ll not want to miss this one! Abby s Closet Prom Dress Give Away! By Anne Harrington Imagine the Oregon Convention Center s Exhibit Hall filled with rows and rows of free prom dresses from size 0 to plus sizes. Jan Sykes has been coordinating an annual field trip to the Abby s Closet Prom Dress Give Away for countless years. Unfortunately, this year, the event is being held during spring break and the field trip will not be happening. HOWEVER This is a wonderful opportunity to take your daughter to the amazing event! The wonderful coordinators of Abby s Closet have offered a special time just for OSD students: Friday, March 27 th from 9 am 11 am at the Oregon Convention Center, Exhibit Hall A (If you plan to go on the 27 th you must go between the assigned times, other groups have been given special times as well). 4 March 13, 2015 Bi-Weekly Newsletter Volume 3, Edition 9 If the Friday time does not work for you, the event is open to the public: Saturday, March 28 th from 8 am to 4 pm and Sunday, March 29 th from 10 am to 2 pm If you plan to go on March 27 th, please let Jan Sykes (jan.sykes@osd.k12.or.us) or Anne Harrington (anne.harrington@osd.k12.or.us) know so that the Abby s Closet volunteers will know the numbers to expect. The Prom is scheduled for May 7 th at Pringle Hall in Salem and theme is A Night of Enchantment. Poetry Out Loud State Competition By OSD OSD Student, Erika Lauren Aguillon, placed in the top three at Poetry Out Loud Central Regional Competition!
