1 March 1, 2013 Weekly Newsletter Volume 1, Edition 7 Newsletter Newsletter Announcement Previous Newsletter Correction: The previous newsletter, dated Feb. 21 st Vol. 1 Ed. 6, which was supposed to be released on Feb. 15, was delayed and released on the 21 st instead. There was an announcement, which stated that there would be a short school week the next week following the newsletter s release. It would have been correct if the newsletter were published and released on the 15 th instead of the 21 st. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. A Track & Field Meeting to cover the agenda for practice. Track & Field is in Session! Students participating in the Track & Field have started their practices and training for various events. More information on the Track & Field Meets will be announced as soon as they come out. OSD s Carnival OSD will be hosting a carnival open to the public on March 5 th. The carnival will sport several games and activities made for the family to enjoy! Come and join us in having fun. The following activities will be available: Games Cake Walk Duck Pond Face Painting Hot Dogs / Chips / Soda Dual Challenge Kiddypillar Bungee Run Back Climb Clown General Admission Costs Admission: $3.00 No Individual Game Tickets: wristbands available for purchase to access all games and inflatables! Orientation Day Any Deaf or hard of Hearing student ages 5-21 are invited to attend OSD for the day. On March 5 th, beginning at 7:40am in our library, students can show other students to attend classes. Lunch is provided. School is finished at 2:50pm. Our Annual OSD Carnival starts at 6:00pm-9:30pm that evening in the gymnasium. Students with a modified diploma up to age 21 are invited to experience our Adult Transition Program (ATP). Date: March 5, 2103 Time: 7:40am-2:50pm OSD State-Wide Deaf / Hard of Hearing Swim Free entrance for All Deaf / Hard of Hearing Students in Oregon, ages 5-21 paid for by the Nightmare Factory. All other family members: $3.00 (Group Rate) Where: Dallas Aquatic Center, Dallas, Oregon Date: April 18, 2013 Time: 7:00pm-9:00pm Note: This announcement will appear again in future newsletter as we approach the event. Welding with ATP Here is Lucas Cartwright and Ben K. Tyler Obrien at Welding school in Salem Oregon. Ben K is certified with 3 certificates. Lucas has been successful in completing 4 certifications. To celebrate the similarities and differences among various cultures. To encourage personal empowerment for conference attendees. To address issues related to education, families, and community advocacy for a multicultural deaf constituency. Lucas C. listening to the teacher while Anne H. provides communication support. Ben is already gone to a job back east working on a rig. Tyler has a few more weeks left and we hope he stays in Marion County to work at his new job site. Tyler has been in the Adult Transition Program, A.T.P., since September. They are great role models for the other A.T.P. students. Thanks to V.R., Greg P. and Anne H. for all the help and support they have given to this program! Jean Obray A.T. P. counselor in Dorm program National Deaf People of Color Conference III The Third Triennial National Deaf People of Color Conference will be hosted by Gallaudet in Washington, D.C. from Thursday, June 13, 2013 to Sunday, June 16, This exciting conference is promoting prospective students from ethnic backgrounds to attend the Collegiate Leadership Program at the NDPC with the support of the university and college to recognize and advance their support in making a difference for their students of color in shaping their future. -Marci Brown Graduate Assistant to Laurene Simms and assisting Tyese Wright at Gallaudet University For more information about the event or to register for the event, please visit ipads in the Middle School The Middle School students recently started using ipads in their Language Arts classes. They use the ipads for a variety of things. They take Accelerated Reader tests, video themselves signing summaries, write notes, make vocabulary flash cards, read Achieve3000 articles, and look up vocabulary in the dictionary and on-line. They seem to find a new way to use the ipads almost every day. The objectives of the conference are Page 4
5 March 1, 2013 Weekly Newsletter Volume 1, Edition 7 savvy and they are able to apply their computer skills to learning to read and write English. The ipads are a great educational tool and we look forward to using them even more as the year goes on. Melinda G. Middle School Teacher Christopher M. working on class assignment and Kasala H. in the background. The students love using the ipads in class. Christopher M. says he likes signing a summary on the ipad before he writes it. Christian R. working on the ipad. Christian R. says he likes taking the AR tests on his ipad because he can take the test right after he reads the book. As their teacher, my favorite thing about using the ipads is seeing how motivated the students are to do reading and writing activities. They are so technologically Page 5
