1 INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC CONFERENCE in Dear Colleagues, The idea of bringing together basic scientists and clinicians in the field of ORL in an academic environment was initiated 30 years ago. The first two International Academic Conference took place in Utrecht, the Netherlands in 1984 and in 1986, which I organized together with E. Huizing. Topics that were covered primarily focused on immunobiology, autoimmunity, transplantation, and the newly developed techniques in rhinology and tumour immunology. Subsequent meetings were held in San Diego, USA (1990) under Brian McCabe and Jeff Harris; in Oita, Japan (1994) under the late Goro Mogi; in Sienna, Italy (1998) under Desiderio Passali; in Jeju Island, South Korea (2002) under Hee Nam Kim and In Yong Park; in Melbourne, Australia (2006) under Stephen O Leary; in Malaga, Spain (2012) under Rafael Urquiza; and most recently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2015) under Lokman Saim. Through the years, the program has expanded to include topics in recent advances in ORL research. As founder of this International Academic Conference in Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, it gives me great pleasure to see its continued growth in attendance and importance. There is a lot more that we can do. In March 2018, we shall all gather in Manila, Philippines. I am sure we will all have a wonderful time - exchanging ideas among colleagues, meeting old friends and making new ones, and discovering the beauty of our host country. Professor Jan E.
